1 General
Bellows for glass equipment mostly serve the purpose to absorb length deviations due to heat
expansions so that no unpermissibly high loading tensions are created within the pipe lines
and equipment. Bellows may also be deployed to compensate for pipeline offsets and
vibrations.
In order to fullfil the above mentioned task, the correct setting of the fixing
screw and its correct positioning position to the pipeline, as well as the
correct placement of the fixed bearing points are of decisive significance.
By employing different examples, this guide shall display how the assembly and setting must
be performed for different operational conditions.
Of course, not all assembly and and operational possibilities can be described here, therefore
please consult with the engineering design department in difficult and unclear situations.

2 Compensation of Length Deviations due to Heat Expansions

In order to compensate for length deviations due to heat expansions, the part acting due to
expansion must be set as fixed bearing point versus the opposite flange connection.
For this type of installation, which functions in both vacuum and also in over-pressure cases,
the stopping screws must either be completely removed, or at least be unscrewed on both
sides so that the incurring expansions do not relay force and torque loads into the subsequent
glass pipeline.
( see case example 1, item 5.1 )
The design of the fixed bearing points shall be performed in a fashion so that these incurring
force loads, due to over- and under-pressure, may be absorbed without significant offset. In
the course, support forks are deployed in connection with rack pipes and Kee clamps for
small nominal sizes, whereas pipe frames are deployed for nominal sizes greater than DN
300.
( see the following illustrations for items 2.1 and 2.2)

A further possibility for compensation of length deviations due to heat expansions in the case
of simultaneous over- and underpressure, is to assemble two bellows, which operate similar
to a pendular support.
In this assembly case, both nuts of the stopping screws shall be set to a tolerance gap of 0.1
0.2 mm so that angular movements are possible.
By performing this setting, no force loads may be relayed due to over- and under-pressure
into the glass pipeline, and no loading tensions are exerted within the glass pipeline.
For all installations, in which stopping screws are deployed, one shall always
notice that the stopping screw plane always settles to be perpendicular to
the pipeline plane.
If this rule is not complied with, significant loading tensions are created
within the glass pipeline, which frequently leads to glass breakage.
( see case example 4, item 5.4, and case example 6, item 5.6 )

3 Prevention of Vibration Transfer

Bellows are deployed in order to prevent the relay of vibrations to subsequent pipelines.
Their assembly is performed via an externally positioned stopping screw during the assembly
status. Upon the first start-up heating of equipment, the settings of the bellows shall be
inspected, and possibly be corrected; this is performed in a cold and pressure-free state.
For stirrers, the bellow serves the purpose of detachment, meaning for the prevention of relay
of drive weight load onto the stirrer end.
Additionally, the transfer of vibrations onto other equipment parts is prevented.
The stopping screws shall be removed for the above mentioned deployment!

4 Assembly Support and Tolerance Compensation

As all glass pipelines display fairly large tolerances, bellows and joint seals are deployed
during assembly for the purpose of length and angular compensation. Of course, the joint
seal can only compensate for angular offsets and not for length deviations.
This applies for pipelines ranging up to nominal widths of DN 150. In this application case, the
guidelines described in items 2 and 3 shall unconditionally be considered.
It is of utmost importance that the planes of the stopping screws are
positioned perpendicular to the pipeline plane.

6 Final Note
In order to minimize insecurities during the assembly of the bellows, all technical drawings
shall be indicated with the positioning of the bellows and of the stopping screws via a symbol.
As sometimes inclarities remain to exist in spite of all of the notes contained within the
drawings and assembly guidelines, one shall please consult with the engineering design
department in such cases.
For very complex equipment, acceptance shall be performed by a works
expert on-site.
In order to again point out to the importance of correct assembly and setting of the bellows,
the magnitude of force loads, which result from exerting vacuum and pressure, shall be
stressed.
