SHALE FAIL

ENVIRONMENTAL groups have failed in their

campaign for a moratorium on fracking in the
Northern Territory.
Mines and Energy Minister David Tollner has
ruled out a freeze, saying the government will
hasten slowly to establish stringent regulations

that protect groundwater and the environment.

The energy industry welcomed the governments
resolve, saying jobs and investment would go if
politicians caved in to the vocal protest movement.
However, doubts remain about current and future projects as Territory Labor has backed calls
for a moratorium until appropriate environmental oversights are established.

This contradicts the findings of an independent

report by respected former public servant Allan
Hawke, who dismissed the need for a moratorium
and found the environmental risks associated
with hydraulic fracturing can be managed effectively subject to the creation of a robust regulatory
regime.
