The main characters of this novel are Nathan Prices family. The first
is Nathan Price himself. He was as an overzealous Baptist Minister. He was ambitious
and religious man. He had a mission to safe the African people in Congo and he became
a missionary endeavor there. The second is Orleanna Price. She was Nathans wife. She
was beautiful and nature-loving woman. She always kept her daughters to be safe.
Nathan and Orleanna have four daughters named Rachel, Ruth Mei, Adah, and Leah.
Rachel is the oldest daughter. She was materialistic, egoistic and stupid girl but her
characteristic was changed to become a mature woman because of her tough life in
Congo. The next are Adah and Leah. They were twin sisters. Adah was wry and dumb
but she was a brilliant observer. Leah was a tomboy and idealistic girl. She was really
like her father. She dedicated the rest of her life for Congo development and making as
much as possible the people there became safe as a Christians. The last is Ruth Mei. She
was the youngest daughter of Nathans family. In the beginning of the story, she was
described as an active, cheerful and strong girl. But, then she had malaria illness and
was bitten by mambo snake, thats way she became a really weak and quite girl and
finally she died.
I do like Nathans characters. He was a very religious person. He
holds his belief strongly. He decided to take the risk mission to save the unlighted souls
of Africa and he had to move his family there. In my opinion, it is really odd nowadays
that there is a person like Nathan who wants to sacrifice his own life even his family to
live uneasily in Congo because the villagers there didnt accept Nathans religion. But
he proved that he can face it well and propagate his religion idealism to enlighten
Congo people.
The confusing part for me is how Rachel could leave Eeben Axelroot
whereas this pilot had saved her life from the marriage with Chief Tata Ndu. She is little
bit tricky woman. Actually this is the funny part for me, but the writer did not described
the detail of Rachels way to leave Axelroot, so that I am really curious to know and
became confused.
I really dislike the time when Ruth Mei died. Chief Tata Ndu arranged
the tricky efforts to make Nathans family give up and one of them is that he put the
mambo snake in Nathans house and finally it bit Ruth and Ruth died. I do not like it not
because of Chief Ndus tricky efforts but also that made Orleanna became so frustrated
over and guilty. She was ill hardly. I think that was the hardest and saddest time for
Nathans family. And I was crying a river when I read that part. It is so sad.

I have one thought related to the story that when we fight in Allahs
way and religion, Allah will help our life. That is shown by Nathans effort to propagate
the Christian Religion and Jesus in this novel finally helps Nathans family life. What I
would change in this story is that I want the religion is Islam. This novel inspired me,
maybe one time I would propagate Islam to the remote area. I think it will be great
traveling and experience. The larger issue of this novel is about the religion and faithful.
A religious one tried to give what a true about religion and faithful to the villagers who
stayed in their old and wrong tradition.
The moral value I got from this novel is the struggle of someone to tell
the truth about the religion. Its not easy to get the feedback from the people. Moreover
the religion and faithful were very personal for them. The effort and principle of Nathan
to have a missionary endeavor was ignored by the villagers but he still hold out on his
religion. As I know that there are still many religious people gave a missionary
endeavor because of money, but not for Nathan. On the contrary, he left his beautiful
life in North America and decided to live in Congo, Africa.
Addition
For larger issue, if you think that is about friendship you can use it and dont forget to
explain which scene that shows the larger issue which you think
