1. INTROUDACTION
Tasik Kenyir or Kenyir Lake is an artificial lake located in the state of Terengganu*
Terengganu in northeast
Malaysia created in 1985 by the damming of the Kenyir River. It is the largest man-mademan lake in
Southeast Asia.. The lake covers 260 km² and contains 340 small islands. Although an artificial lake, the
area has been successfully developed for eco-tourism,
tourism, and there are many resorts around its shores.
Fishing is popular, as are jungle treks, waterfalls and caves

he lake is known as a unique tourist destination for its beautiful scenario of tropical forest
and widely known for its valuable fflora
lora and fauna species. It is believed that the area is the habitat of
more than 8000 species of flowers, 2500 species of plants and trees, 8000 species of orchids, 370
species of birds and 30000 species of fresh water fish. They live in harmony and in peace in their own
natural habitat. The Kenyir Lake creates and provides many amenities for total relaxation and enjoyment
in a unique environment and many aactivities the place can offer.
Terengganu: - is located at the east cost of peninsular Malaysia. To the north and the north-

west is Kelantan state and in the south and south
south-west is Pahang state. Terengganu covers

12,955 km , and comprises of 7 districts. The economy in this state bases on oil and the oil
industry.

2. Back to the history.

This area had been listed as a centre of civilization in the era of Neolithic. Some artifact had been
uncovered by a group of archeologists in 1956 and 1970’s. Such artifacts were kitchen utensil, axes and
tools dating back in Neolithic era. It is believed that during that era this place was known as one of the
business activity centers.
The development of this area started in 1961 by construction of the dam spanned for 15 years,
which is from the planning stage to th
thee completion of the dam. Actually it was first identified in 1961
but it proved uneconomic due to the small demand and the high cost of production. Early 1970’s the
government revived the study and further site investigations was proceeded.
Even though the original survey for the project was in1972 the construction was started in 1978
and was completed in 1985. In 1987 the whole project was officially opened by his Royal Highness The
Sultan of Terengganu Darul Iman and was named after the baginda Sultan "Sultan Mahmud Hydro
Electric Power Station".

The project site is located at Kuala Kenyir (about 55km from Kuala Terengganu). The main
features of Kenyir Hydro Electric Project are a rock fill dam with 400 megawatts of generating plant.
The normal capacity of the lake store is 13.6 billion cubic meters of water. Whereas

point is 145 meterss deep. This power station complex building can produce 100 MW (megawatts) power
units which can be supplied through out Malaysia. Normally tthe he daily operation operates at a

3. How to get there.

Kuala Terengganu to Tasik Kenyir. Visitors can take a bus to Kuala Berang (40 minutes) and
then hop on a taxi from there to Gawi Jetty (15 minutes). Another alternative route will be driving
from Kuala Terengganu through Kampung Sungai Tong to Lake Kenyir, which takes about 40
minutes

4. The nature in Tasik Kenyir.
Standing about 138 meters above the sea level, this lake is surrounding by rich and valuable
fauna. Oil palm estates are planted to the north and northeast. Whereas in the north is Hulu Telemong
Forest Reserve and in the south is Hulu Te

surrounded by tropical forest with rich heritage of flora from a beautiful exotic orchid to the majestic
high trees in this place. You can found thriving meranti, resak, neram, kapur, several rattan species,

flora and fauna share together living in harmony in the tropical forest making this place a heaven to the
real world of wildlife.
4-1) Waterfalls.
There are many spectacular waterfalls in Tasik Kenyir. These waterfalls are popular spots for
picnicking as they provide a cool, relaxed and rejuvenating ambience that awaits its visitors. In Tasik
Kenyir there are 14 waterfalls; however the most interesting wa

4-2) Hill Regions.
The hill regions of Tasik Kenyir are a world of untouched virgin tropical jungle estimated to be
millions of years old. There is no exact estimate of the number of species of plants and wildlife existing
within this vast ecosystem.
The highest peak in Tasik Kenyir itself is Mount Chergau. Meanwhile mount Gageau, with an
elevation of 4.514 feet above sea-level,

4-3) Caves.
There are two caves accessible to visitors at Kenyir, Gua Bewah and Gua Taat. They are located
at the southern end of the lake, and lie within Taman Negara. Before the creation of the lake, there
were probably several caves accessible and some were of archaeological importance. However when
the area was flooded, most of the caves were lost underwater. Batu Tok Bidan cave in Gunung Bewah
was one of those.
Inside these caves an extraordinary sight of stalactites and stalagmites awaits the explorer. In
addition in Taat and Bewah caves there are many secrets of the past, further excavations are now being
planned by the authorities in a bid to unravel their mys

5. The main activities in Tasik Kenyir.

6. Accommodation in Tasik Kenyir.
There are two main types of accommodations in Tasik Kenyir, and each of these two types has
different facilities and can you do different activities in it.. The first type of accommodation is houseboat
which is the most popular to use in Tasik Kenyir for journeys and to do fishing then to have meals and
sleep. The second type of accommodation is lakeside resorts where in Kenyir ir there are 9 main resorts are
located in different places around the lake and all of them close to the lakeside, offer luxurious five star
accommodation of Kenyir Lake View Resort.
6-1) Houseboat.
In our journey to Tasik Kenyir we used three different houseb

different facilities, so in this we would like to analysis everyone of them and comparison
them, and If these houseboats are comfortable to do the journey or not and how these boats
havee been improved to be houseboats.

6-1-1) The main houseboat (( TKP 167)).
TKP 167 was the main houseboat in our trip which includes, Cabin for the captain, Kitchen, TV
and table for meals, two W.C. and two bedrooms

o houseboat by added new parts around the main boat to
make it more comfortable for fishing and doing the other activities as a houseboat, but this transfer has
not been done professionally so the general image of the boat still not in a level of tourist houseboat.

located in the beginning of the fishing boat so the captain can sail comfortably and in the same time this
cabin actually in the center of the houseb

Second part is the kitchen and the table with TV, which is used to make the meals and for the
tourists to sit together in the night for different entertainment activities, may be the situation in this part
are comfortable for some tourists as they live in a camp in the jungles or in a floating chalets but the place
is too small to do this activities with a number of about 20 tourists, that is because this boat was not
designed as a houseboat, However this part likes between the cabin from side with the kitchen and the
W.C. from the another side so this part is the most active and crowded in all the time.
Third part is the W.C. which iis located in the end of the left
part of the houseboat, there are two W.C. can be used as a toilet or
bathroom, these two W.C. should have a special zone can separate
them from the other parts of the houseboat so the users can de more
comfortable when they use it.
The forth part is the bedrooms, In this houseboat there are

two bedrooms in the first floor, the first room can provide four beds
and the second room can provide about 6 beds beds, sleeping is not important
activity when you want to visit Tasik Kenyir but the number of beds is less than the number of tourists

who use the houseboat so in the midnight many of them suffered to get a bed….

6-1-2)The second houseboat (( TKP 49 ))

This houseboat is different from the first one because it has not been developed from a fishing
boat to be a houseboat
at so it is maybe a big fishing boat or a real houseboat, which includes a cabin,
sitting room, kitchen, bedroom and W.C.
The cabin room is located in the center of the boat and in front of its there is a table for sitting as
we can see in the picture so maybe this activity can close the view of the captain when he sails.

The sitting room in this boat is separated from the Kitchen and the W.C. So this situation is
better than the first houseboat ((TKP 167)) where the sitting room, kitchen and the W.C.

same zone. In addition the sitting room is linked with the bedroom by stair and with the cabin by a
sharing door. In addition the sitting room can be used as a bedroom in the night because it is closed
and there is air-condition
This houseboat has two bedrooms the first one under the sitting
room which can provide 6 beds
Andnd the second one up to the sitting room which iis divided to two
parts first part iss for sitting and the second part as a bedroom provides
about 4 beds. Behind the bedroom
there is a water tank which is located
up to the Kitchen and the W.C. for
washing and for taking shower.
The location of the kitchen in this

boat is better than the first boat but this
kitchen is too dirty and small and there
is not any equipment to cook.

Eventually the W.C. in this boat there is two W.C. should be used as a toilet or bathroom but
these two W.C. are so dirty and dark.
Generally the location of the activities and the like between them in this houseboat ((TKP 49)) is
better than the first houseboat ((TKP 167)) but the equipments and the facilities are so bad in the kitchen
and the W.C.
6-1-3) The third houseboat.

In our trip this boat was the third houseboat and the last one. The design of it very different
from the first
st and the second houseboats and also the general image which seem to be a can house
in poor village. This houseboat contains a cabin room is opened to the sitting room and after that
there is a kitchen and a bedroom in the second floor. To mention there iss not any W.C. in this
houseboat and that means a big problems to the tourists who want to travel by this
thi houseboat for
maybe a few days.
The cabin room is located in the beginning of the houseboat and the main entrance also there
and this cabin room actually only a chair for the ssailor.

have a place for sitting outside.
For someone who wants to

the other activities. It looks like a meeting room.
The Kitchen
hen is located behind the sitting room but there is not any direct entrance between the
sitting room and the kitchen. I think this is positive point, in the same time this kitchen is dirty and not a
level of a tourism houseboat.
From the sitting room there is a stair can be used

to go to the bedroom which is located in the second floor
as we can see in the pictures below,, but there is not any
bed only a few some beddings.
Generally these three boats are not suitable to be

these boats have, so we want to suggest some points can help to
solve these problems or to design new houseboats in Tasik Kenyir
for the local and international tourists.

6-1-4) Suggestions
Tasik Kenyir now become
becomes on of the favorite places in Malaysia for the local tourists and
also many of the international tourists because of the beautiful nature and many activ
activities

this lake. In addition to visit this lake for one day or tto
o have a journey for some days the main transport
unit is the houseboat. So the houseboat should be in a tourism level for journey or for accommodation.
We mean by tourism level “interesting houseboat can be a part of the lake image and nature” with a good
level of services as an accommodation unit.
1- The general image of the houseboat

image is very important because it can reflect the traditional image and the lifestyle image of
the lake “ Tasik Kenyir” and the people who live there, but our houseboats in the journey
were not have any good image. They were a fishing boats or some think else.
So we suggest we can use the traditional image of the houses in Terengganu and
improve it to be the image of the houseboats in Tasik Kenyir, This is happened in
many other counties have a lake same Kenyir lake.
