PRECAST CONCRETE
Acheson & Glover has been
manufacturing concrete products
for almost 50 years, developing
an outstanding product range
complimented by a service tailored
to meet our customers requirements.

Precast concrete is cast and cured

in a quality controlled environment,
eliminating the need for on site
storage and means it is exceptionally
resistant to impact, corrosion,
weathering and abrasion, making
it virtually maintenance free.

Precast concrete offers all the

advantages of concrete while
eliminating many of the difficulties
associated with on site casting such as
weather considerations and extended
duration of the construction period.

Precast Floors
What to use where:
FLOOR TYPE

MOST ECONOMICAL FOR :

MOST USEFUL WHERE :

T-Beam

Spans under 4m

Useful where:
Site access is poor - can be manually lifted
There are awkward shapes
There are a lot of services to accommodate
Structure exists - can be accommodated in pockets
Internal walls only 100mm wide

For spans 4m 5.5m

Useful where:
Cantilevers up to 1500mm are required
Airborne sound resistance of 300kg/m2 is needed
Crane is being hired to install floor - smaller crane needed as only 600mm wide

Spans 5.6m - 18m

Useful where:
Cost is important - most economical span:depth ratio
Floor depth is important - achieves largest span with minimum depth
Can be fitted into steel beams to reduce overall floor depth
There are specific requirements every floor is bespoke
Service openings are factory formed
Can be manufactured to suit almost any structure: concrete, steel, block work
Easily manufactured to suit unusual details & angles

Buildings over 4 stories

Useful where:
Buildings have a lot of external structural elements
There are high concentrated point loads
HA traffic loadings are required
Progressive collapse detail is needed
There are structural elements such as beams & balconies to be tied in
The building is over 4 stories
A continuous floor design is needed

Buildings with large openings

Useful where:
There are large openings to accommodate
A mechanical connection between floor plate and topping is desirable

Hollowcore
Acheson & Glover prestressed Hollowcore flooring will take the
stress out of flooring for you. Manufactured in depths ranging
from 150mm - 500mm.

Manufactured to BS8110 on heated

steel beds in an enclosed, controlled
factory environment, with a 28 day
cube strength of concrete in excess of
50N/mm2, you can be confident of a
consistent quality product.
Each floor is designed to our customers
exact specification. Service ducts,
recesses and openings are designed
into your floor and accurately
incorported during manufacture.

PRESTRESSED HOLLOWCORE FLOORING - A PROFESSIONAL CHOICE

SAVES TIME
Time consuming site operations such as
propping and shuttering wet concrete are
virtually eliminated thus having a positive
effect on the construction project.
IMMEDIATE PLATFORM
Once the Acheson & Glover floor units
have been placed in position and
grouted, they provide an immediate
working platform for all follow-on trades.
This reduces site delays to a minimum.

NO PROPPING
In most cases propping is not required
with Hollowcore flooring, saving time
and money. The area below the floor
remains free from congestion allowing
other trades to progress unhindered.
DESIGN FLEXIBILITY
Prestressed Hollowcore floors can be
designed to suit a very wide range of
buildings and meet most project criteria.

QUALITY FINISH
State of the art manufacturing techniques
ensure a quality finish. Direct decoration
using suitable materials is possible in
many projects.
DIAPHRAGM ACTION
Once the Acheson & Glover units have
been grouted they can be assumed
to provide a floor providing full
diaphragm action.

FINAL PRODUCT TESTING

In addition to Acheson & Glovers commitment to use
only top quality raw materials, which are tested both
in-house and independently to confirm quality,
Hollowcore floor units are routinely and randomly
selected from the production line and load tested
for compliance using industry standard practices.
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
Acheson & Glover continually review products
in light of both in-house and external research and
development work which has been carried out on
Prestressed Hollowcore units throughout Europe and
beyond. This helps ensure that we remain at the
forefront of Hollowcore unit technology and the
customer obtains the best utilization of our products.

SERVICE OPENINGS
Service Openings, with a diameter less than 75mm,
can be created through units after installation by
drilling centrally through the cores. You must consult
with our design office before commencing this work.
Generally service openings up to 400mm wide in a
single standard unit width are permitted subject to
satisfying design criteria. These should be factory
formed.

Hollowcore units can be used for a collapsed design, please contact

our technical department or consult our website for full details.

Hollowcore Design Characteristics

FIRE RESISTANCE
Acheson & Glover Prestressed Hollowcore floor units
have a minimum 1 hour fire rating (BS8110 Section 4
Table 4.9). Ratings of up to 2 hours can be achieved
depending on design criteria. Contact our technical
department for details.
SOUND RESISTANCE
Acheson & Glover Hollowcore floor units have a
high resistance to both impact and airborne sound
transmission and contribute to satisfying the latest
building regulations.
FINISHES
Our units are cast on heated steel casting beds,
providing a high standard of finish, to Type A, Clause
6.11.3 of BS8110, and are suitable in appropriate cases
for direct decoration. The soffit is suitable for direct
application of a textured paint finish where this is
applied in accordance with the manufacturers

10

www.acheson-glover.com

instructions. Plaster finishes are not recommended on

longer spans, but where intended, it may be necessary
to use a bonding agent in accordance with plaster
manufacturer instructions.
CAMBER
Prestressed units have an inherent upward camber and
appropriate allowance should be made in finishes to
cater for this.
Camber should not normally exceed L/300.
Differential Cambers will arise with units of different
lengths or where changes in span direction occur.

T-Beam Floor
The Acheson & Glover T-Beam offers a cost effective structural
flooring option. It is particularly suitable where the infill depth
exceeds 600mm and where a structural floor is required by
building control.
Ideal for sites with poor access
Can easily accommodate awkward shapes
Easily accommodates services
Can be inserted into an existing structure
Available ex-stock in 50mm increments

Design
The floors are designed by
Acheson & Glover to support
loadings appropriate to their
intended use, eg. as dwellings
or as offices. Generally we are also
able to allow for non-loadbearing
partition walls in our design.
Technical support is available
from Acheson & Glover, who will
be pleased to offer technical
advice on any specific application.

In situations where self weight must be minimised, the lattice

UltraFloor provides the advantages of a concrete floor - improved sound

insulation, better fire performance, an ideal base for underfloor heating
and greater design flexibility, in a modular, off the shelf form.
The Acheson & Glover technical team will design the floor to give you

Design
By involving the UltraFloor technical team at an early stage,
qualified engineers will ensure that the most effective precast
concrete solution can be achieved.
Installation
UltraFloor is delivered and fitted with a lorry mounted crane.
Suitable access roads should be provided.
Propping
Propping may be required for long spans but is recommended in
most cases to remove any variation in soffit levels and should be
erected before grouting takes place. The props would also provide
additional support for heavy construction loads.
SOUND RESISTANCE
Acheson & Glovers UltraFloor has a high resistance to both impact
and airborne sound transmission and contributes to satisfying the
latest building regulations.
