rom the vast plains of the Serengeti to historic cities such

as Vienna, Lima and Kyoto; from the prehistoric rock art
on the Iberian Peninsula to the Statue of Liberty; from the
Kasbah of Algiers to the Imperial Palace in Beijing - all of
these places, as varied as they are, have one thing in common. All
are World Heritage sites of outstanding cultural or natural value
to humanity and are worthy of protection for future
generations to know and enjoy.

Forest elephants visit swampy clearings to dig for salt, drink and
play in Sangha Trinational. Deep in the rainforest along the borders
of Cameroon, the Central African Republic and the Congo, Sangha
is a refuge for gorillas, chimpanzees and other endangered wildlife.

From the 8th century B.C., beneath the ancient cities of Maresha and
Bet-Guvrin in Israels lowlands, inhabitants dug hundreds of interconnected caves in the soft chalk and limestone rock. Used as cisterns,
dovecotes, olive and grape presses, as well as burial chambers, some of
the caves are decorated with elaborate paintings and inscriptions.

The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System includes colourful, diverse coral formations, atolls, mangrove
forests and coastal lagoons rich in marine life. The second largest reef complex in the world, the site
is home to 500 species of fish. Many endangered species, including West Indian manatees, hawksbill
turtles and American crocodiles find shelter here.

The Grand Mosque of Agadez features the highest mud-brick minaret in the world. Built
in the 15th century, Agadez lies at a caravan crossroads in northern Niger. Some 20,000
people still live in this desert gateway, carrying on traditions of cultural and economic
exchange.

Portugals University of Coimbra Alta and Sofia evolved from

a small 13th-century academy to a grand centre of learning for
Portugal and its colonies by the 16th century. A jewel among the
universitys buildings, the Joanine Librarys 18th-century baroque
design features gilded wooden shelves and arches.

Nature and people both carved their history into the desert on Jordans southern border at Wadi Rum. Sandstone mountains and broad, treeless valleys glow orange and
red beneath an unforgiving sun. Thousands of petroglyphs and rock carvings reveal 12
millennia of human life here.

In north-western India, Rani-ki-Vav (the Queens Stepwell) is an inverted stone

temple that honours and protects the sacred waters below. Constructed in the 11th
century by Queen Udayamati, the stepwell is a single component with more than
500 carved sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses, literary figures and scenes
of daily life.

In the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, Germany, the fabled river winds for 65 km past enchanting
medieval villages, steep slate cliffs and terraced hillside vineyards. Stone toll gates and the
remains of dozens of castles and fortresses stand guard on the riverbanks. For centuries,
the Rhine has served as an essential trade route between northern and southern
Europe and as an inspiration for artists and poets.
