Function: Marine Engineering at Operational Level
MARINE ENGINEERING KNOWLEDGE (STEAM)

India (2002)

M.E.O. Class IV
(Time allowed - 3hours)
Afternoon Paper

Total Marks 100

NB : (1)All Questions are Compulsory

(2)All Questions carry equal marks
(3)Neatness in handwriting and clarity in expression carries weightage
(4) Illustration of an Answer with clear sketches / diagrams carries weightage.
1. Sketch suitable welded joints indicating the approximate plate thickness and
dimensions of preparation for the following purposes : (a) End plate connection to the shell of an unfired pressure vessel.
(b) Longitudinal seam of an unfired pressure vessel.
(c) Prefabricated combustion chamber for an auxiliary boiler.
2. Discuss, with reference to the super heater outlet temperature of a main boiler
operating at a constant load, the following statements:
(a) An increase in excess air will tend to cause a decrease in super heater outlet
temperature due to the cooling effect of more air being introduced.
(b) A decrease in economizer inlet temperature will tend to cause a decrease in super
heater outlet temperature due to the cooling effect of more water being introduced.
(c) Badly fouled generating tube banks will cause an increase in the super heater outlet
temperature.
(d) Excessive amounts of total dissolved solids in the boiler water will cause variations
in the super heater outlet temperature.
3. (a) Explain why the on-board testing of ammonia and silica in water of high-pressure
boilers has become a routine in recent years, giving the generally permitted values
and stating how control is affected.
(b) Discuss the reasons for the employment of the Coordinated Phosphate - pH form
of treatment for boiler water and1 explain the method of control.
(c) State why it may be difficult to maintain the desired chemical conditions of boiler
water and condensate during maneuvering.
4. (a) Sketch and describe a water-ring type-priming pump as fitted to centrifugal bilgepump.
(b) Identify the important running clearances with this type of pump.
(c) What is meant by cavitation in the centrifugal pump? How is it avoided?

5. What do you understand by the following terms when related to high-precision

gearing as would be used for propulsion reduction gearing : shaving, lapping,
grinding?
6. With reference to auxiliary boilers, explain the reasons for
(a) the necessity for oil free feed water,
(b) precautions taken when lighting burners,
(c) joint blow out at man-hole or inspection doors
7. Sketch a sea water evaporation plant using engine coolant as the heating medium,
labeling the principal components and showing the direction of fluid flow in all lines.
(a) State why the distillate produced is generally not suitable for human
consumption.
(b) Describe how the distillate can be rendered fit for drinking.
(c) Define the conditions under which it can never be used for human consumption
8. With reference to turbo generators, describe:
(a) the reduction gearing and the manner in which it is lubricated and how the oil is
pumped, filtered and cooled;
(b) the cooling water and extraction pump arrangements.
9. Sketch and describe a steam-reducing valve and give a suitable example of where the
valve may be usefully used.
What effect has failure of the diaphragm on the valve and how might the engineer's
attention be drawn to such an accident?
10. Describe, with the aid of suitable sketches, the construction of a water-tube boiler
stating the type selected.
