DISTRICT ROTARACT REPRESENTATIVE MESSAGE

Happy Rotary New Year to all my Rotaract Family and Friends!
It is truly an amazing feeling to know that we can and will make a
difference through our collective Y.E.S.! to serve our communities in
whatever way we can. Thank you for your trust in me to help guide this
great effort for the 2015-2016 year!
This year we must learn from our past mistakes and more importantly
our past successes so that collectively we can increase our level of
Rota-readiness! As RI President Ravi stated we have one year to make a
difference and to build lasting impressions that will be engraved
forever in the hearts and lives of those we help.
Let us never forget our strengths as a Rotaract District which are our
youthfulness, road to excellence and unwavering focus on providing
service above self!
Therefore Rotaract District 7030, I share with you our mantra for this year and the burning question
which I hope we can also answer confidently as we develop our skills and expand our connections in
the world of RI, "Are you Rota-ready?" I know I am...oh Y.E.S.!!!

YIR,
DRR Giselle Holder

ROTARACT DISTRICT 7030 FOCUS

Are you Rota-Ready?
For so many of us, Rotaract is much more
than just an extra-curricular activity. It
becomes an essential part of our everyday
at a time in our lives where we are
growing in every aspect possible.
However, how do you measure and view
the benefit of Rotaract in our everyday
life? Do you see Rotaract as that stepping
stone which allows for us to reach even
closer to our holistic goals? How do you
view Rotary, adversary or foe?

The theme therefore challenges us to not only assess the benefits that our Rotaract experience has
given to us but also to think of the wider picture and ponder the following questions:

Are our Interactors ready for Rotaract?

Are our Rotaractors ready for Rotary?
Is Rotaract ready for Interact and is Rotary ready for our Rotaractors?
Are our Rotaractors ready for the world?

What we hope to achieve therefore from our Rotaract experience is the corresponding response
which ends our theme, the energetic and resounding response of Y.E.S.! This Y.E.S.! which is an
acronym for youth, excellence and service-driven describes exactly what is needed on the Rotaract
end to become Rota-ready.

Our youthfulness is one of our most potent assets and must be celebrated through
everything that we do.
The excellence that we strive for in our academics and career complement the projects that
we are able to produce and their success.
The way in which we remain driven to attend to the needs of the community through our
unrelenting dedication, innovation and selflessness help shape our image as a service
organization.

Let us spend this year celebrating our unique strengths and working towards a Rota-ready state that
first begins with a Y.E.S!
To learn more about being Rota-ready, check out the District Plans and Objectives 2015-2016.

District Disaster Preparedness Snippet

Disaster Preparedness is an important, concept, which forms part of societys way of life, for any
given population or territory. As a District, we must view this practice with the seriousness which it
deserves, given the prevalence of various hazards and disaster-causing events in the Caribbean and
North-eastern South America.
To quote from Page 5 of the RI Rotaract District 7030 Disaster Preparedness Manual (2014-2015
Edition):
Disaster preparedness refers to measures taken to prepare for and reduce the effects of disasters.
That is, to predict andwhere possibleprevent them, mitigate their impact on vulnerable
populations, and respond to and effectively cope with their consequences. Disaster preparedness is
best viewed from a broad perspective and is more appropriately conceived of as a goal, rather than
as a specialised programme or stage that immediately precedes disaster response.
Disaster preparedness is a continuous and integrated process resulting from a wide range of
activities and resources rather than from a distinct sectoral activity by itself. It requires the
contributions of many different areasranging from training and logistics, to health care to
institutional development.
As an ongoing educational series, the RI Rotaract District 7030 Newsletter will be used as a forum
whereby pertinent information with respect to Disaster Preparedness will be shared with you all!

Please stay tuned!

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL FOCUS

2015/2016 theme: Be a Gift to the World
RI President K.R. Ravindran chose Be a Gift to the World as his theme for 2015-16. Ravindran urges
Rotary members to give the gifts of time, talent, and knowledge to improve lives in communities
across the globe. "Through Rotary, we can take these gifts and make a genuine difference in the lives
of others and in our world."

We in Rotary aspire to great deeds. We admire those who gave

great gifts to humanity: Abraham Lincoln, who gave the gift of human
dignity to the downtrodden; Mother Teresa, who gave the gift of
compassion to the forgotten; Mahatma Gandhi, who gave the gift of
peaceful change to the oppressed. Their very lives became gifts to
the world.
We can be inspired by their example. We can be inspired to ask,
how can I, in the life that I live without neglecting the
responsibilities that are so dear to me how can I, too, become a gift
to the world? As I considered my theme, I thought of the lessons I
have learned through my Hindu faith. I thought especially of the
story of Sudama.
Sudama was a poor child and a bosom friend of Krishna, who was
born in a royal lineage as an avatar an incarnation of the divine. As the two boys grow up, they drift
apart, and while Krishna becomes a military leader and king of great repute, Sudama remains a
humble villager.
The years go by and Sudama's poverty deepens. Finally, he lacks even food to feed his children. His
wife reminds him of his childhood friendship with Krishna: Perhaps it is time to go to the mighty ruler
for help. Reluctantly, Sudama agrees, but resolves that he will not go empty-handed. He gathers
together a few handfuls of rice all the food his family has left and wraps them in a piece of cloth as
a gift for his friend.
When Sudama enters the palace, he is overwhelmed by the grandeur and by Krishna's gracious
welcome. His meager gift, so carefully prepared, seems a humiliating reminder of his poverty.
Krishna embraces Sudama, who hides the hand holding the rice behind his back. Krishna asks what
he is holding.
Far from being disdainful, Krishna accepts the rice with gratitude and consumes it with joy as the two
sit and talk together. Hours pass, during which the pleasures of their rekindled friendship push all
thoughts of his desperate plight from Sudama's mind. When evening falls, Sudama sets out for home
and only then realizes that he has neglected his task. He is returning with nothing, and Krishna has
eaten his family's last grains of rice.
Sudama steels himself to return to his hungry children. But standing before his gate, as dawn begins
to break, he sees that the hut he left yesterday has become a stately home, and waiting to greet him is
his own family: well-dressed, and well-fed by the baskets of food that appeared in their kitchen as
Krishna ate each grain of Sudama's rice.
Krishna understood what Sudama had brought him: everything he had to give. In return, Krishna gave
him everything he needed. It is never the material value of a gift that matters it is the love that
comes with it. Just as Sudama's gift to Krishna became a gift to Sudama, what we give through Rotary
becomes a gift to us. And we all have a choice: whether to keep our gifts to ourselves or give them to
others, and Be a Gift to the World.
We have only one chance at our lives. And we will have only one chance at this new Rotary year. This
is our time. Let us grasp it. Let us Be a Gift to the World

Knowing that in 2011 we only had 8 people in our Club and as a first time President at age 24 (please
dont do the math), I could depend on them to do anything. It was my greatest year thus far in Rotaract.

I believe that Rotaract is important because

You cant get this anywhere else. Focusing young people on professional development and international
awareness deep rooted in steadfast core values and volunteerism seems like an almost surreal
combination of ideals to provide, yet this is this is exactly what Rotaract, through Rotary, affords each of
us.

I believe that Rotaract is important because

It equips young individuals with the tools to make a positive difference in their communities and

My fondest moment thus far in Rotaract was

Ive had so many but my fondest moments have been in General and Board Meetings when someone says
something funny without knowing it and you look at your friends and without saying a word you all begin

I believe that Rotaract is important because

It changes lives. Both the life of the recipient and Rotaractor is impacted at the same time and to me that

ROTARACT CLUB OF SAINT AUGUSTINE

Rotaract Club of St. Augustine hosts Summer Camp
For over ten years, the Rotaract Club of St. Augustine (RCSA) has been involved in various projects
within their immediate community and wider Trinidad and Tobago. This article highlights the
community projects under the Director of Community Services held from June 2014 to June 2015.
On August 16 2014, the RCSA collaborated with the C.U.B.S Association Summer Camp in Spring
Village, Valsayn. The Rotaractors assisted with the evenings event (distribution of awards and
certificates, ushering services and financial donations). At the summer camp, there were seventy-five
young people ages three to sixteen years who gained knowledge on Rotaract and voluntary work.

Lighting up the lives of the homeless

On November 16 2014, the RSCA embarked on an initiative to feed the homeless during the
Christmas season. The goal of this project was to light up the lives of the homeless and to make at
least one individual less hungry. Their goal was to cater one hundred meals to those at the River Side
Plaza, Port of Spain; they exceeded their objective by providing one hundred and seventy-two.

On December 20 2014, the RSCA continued along their initiative, this time distributing food hampers
to needy families in the St. Augustine community bringing them happiness during the Christmas
season. An estimated cost for this project was five thousand dollars. There would never have been
such a positive outcome were it not for members generous support.

The RCSA has always been a supporter of the Amica Girls Home. On December 12 2014, they held
their annual Christmas party for the girls. In addition, on March 28 2015, they treated the girls to a
movie day.

Plant a life, Let it grow

On June 6 2015, they continued the second phase of a Tree Planting Project, the theme Plant a life,
Let it grow. This was in commemoration of Corpus Christi and World Environmental Day; this took
place at the St. Augustine Secondary School. The process involved clearing and cutting the
designated area for planting, clearing of debris, tilling of the soil, they planted approximately twenty
plants which were all bought by the club. The Principal of the school, students of the horticultural
society as well as the teacher of the Agricultural Science class were all present.
The RCSA has made a small but meaningful contribution to their community and achieved their
annual objectives through the strength of its seventeen member club. They hope to be exemplars to
the young professionals of the Caribbean enabling them to recognise the importance of giving back.

ROTARACT CLUB OF SAINT KITTS

Start a New and Be a Gift to the World
On the 5th July 2015 was the Installation Ceremony of the Rotaract Club of St Kitts for the Rotaract year
2015-2016. This day is an important one for us because we officially announced the rebirth of the club.
St Kitts is back! St Kitts is here! This year we will make all the updates on the D7030 rules a reality. We
also plan to Recruit new members, build team spirit, training all the club members and create
tangibles exchanges with the others clubs! As well, we are going to strengthen our relationship with
the Interact club and the two Rotary clubs of St Kitts.

After a whole week end of meetings with the District team which shows us a strong support, we said
YES! WE ARE ROTA-READY!

ROTARACT CLUB OF SAINT LUCIA

Build Hope, Give Hope
On December 24th, 2013, St. Lucia experienced significantly enhanced rainfall and thunderstorm
activity which was as a result of a low level trough. Canaries and Anse La Raye were the two
communities, where persons are still considered to be living in deplorable conditions.
As part of celebrations of our 30th Charter anniversary, April 22nd 2015, continuing on the path of
serving others, what we are and what we, do we teamed with the Anse La Raye and Canaries
Community Disaster Relief Team with support from our Rotary Club of St. Lucia and members of the
committee, to bring to fruition our Build Hope, Give Hope project which commenced in April and
came to completion in May 2015.

This project was funded by the West Indian Association of Bermuda with the main goal of assisting
persons who were severely affected by the 2013 Christmas Eve Trough.

Rotaract Club of Saint Lucia officially executed the handing over of the home to the victim and her
daughter affected by the Christmas Trough, along with Hampers to other persons of the Canaries
community on Saturday June 13th 2015. All thanks to the West Indian Association of Bermuda our
public sponsors, our sponsoring Rotary Club of St. Lucia and community members.

ROTARACT CLUB OF SAINT LUCIA SOUTH

Charter Dinner
The Rotaract Club of St. Lucia South held its annual Charter Dinner on June 27th, 2015 at L Escape
Restaurant. It was an evening dinner celebrating the clubs 28th year of service. Fifteen members and
their guests, with the addition of the president of the Rotary Club of St. Lucia South, Aleric Soans; and
a few former members and visitors from other clubs enjoyed over four hours of very pleasant
fellowship, the inevitable speeches and of course, a wonderful meal.

The Past President gave her overview of the year then presented the awards for Rotaractor of the Year
to Rot. Annice JnPanel, Most Developed Rotaractor to Rot. Yanic Thomas and Committee of the Year to
the International Service Committee headed by Dir. Kevin JnBaptiste. Heartiest and well deserved
congratulations to all.
Our guest speaker Kayani Descartes graced us with powerful words that set the tone for the incoming
president Rot. Brittney Gonzague to move us toward her vision with a very motivational speech. To
the dismay of our pockets, the dinner ended with a most profitable SAA session conducted by four (!)
mystery sergeants.
We all had a lovely evening at the Charter Dinner; so many thanks to the organizers and to everyone
who came along in support of the event.

Breakfast Sale
The Rotaract Club of St. Lucia South held a breakfast sale on Saturday, the 20th of June, 2015 at the
Laborie Market. Breakfast items included delicious fried bakes, salad and steaming hot cocoa tea.
The endeavor was a success as folk from the community were more than merry to support, helping to
raise money to be used for our club service activities.

Our gratitude goes out to all the members who assisted with the success of this project and to the
community for their continuous patronage.

Paint Job
Our Rotaractors did it again! On the 20th of June 2015, the Rotaract Club of St. Lucia South, with
assistance from members of the Rotaract Club of St. Lucia painted some educational games on the
floors of the Laborie Boys Primary School. The games included Tic-Tac-Toe, Snakes and Ladders,
Twister, Hopscotch, Fun Clock and a Hand Tennis area.

This project was executed as part of our Charter Week activities and also coincides with an
undertaking similar to that of our twin club, Rotaract Club of Central Port of Spain.
Amidst all the hard work and paint-smeared clothing, we couldnt help but have ourselves a blast.
Our appreciation goes out to all those who showed up. Many hands do make light work!

ROTARACT CLUB OF SANGRE GRANDE

RCSG Ushers in the New Year
The Rotaract Club of Sangre Grande celebrated its 9th Annual Handing Over Ceremony on Sunday,
June 28th, 2015 at the Asian Fusion Restaurant. Most members were present for the evenings
festivities. They were joined by the Outgoing and Incoming Presidents of their sponsor club, the
Rotary Club of Sangre Grande, ADRR Chenice, and Rotaractors from RC Felicity/Charlieville.
In his address, President Ajay first reviewed the clubs many successes during 2014-2015, which
included hosting the inaugural District Leadership Training and the official name change. He shared
that the President is only as strong as his team, and offered a few words of appreciation to each
member. As he enters his second consecutive term as President, he called for continued adherence
to the Rotaract way. He reiterated that, during 2015-2016, there will be added emphasis on not only
club administration and membership recruitment and retention, but also joint ventures with our
sponsor Rotary club.
In addition to President Ajay, the other members of the Board are: Vice President Garvin, Secretary
Reshma, and Directors Kara, Darcel, Vikash and Kimberly. Photographer Wayne will now be adding
Rotaractor to his name as he was pinned the newest member of Team RCSG.
The evenings proceedings ended with the distribution of Club Awards. Naturally, dinner, fellowship
and laughter followed.

ROTARACT CLUB OF TOBAGO

Rotaract Club of Tobagos Retreat and Handing Over Ceremony
This year the Rotaract Club of Tobago held its annual Retreat and Handing Over Ceremony on the
weekend of the 27th -28th June, 2015 at Samaan Grove Villas and Watermill Restaurant. The annual
Retreat was planned by the Incoming and Outgoing Executive Boards and Club Service Committee.
This retreat was essential to solve problems, explore new strategies, and to evaluate and train our
members.
Members were able to deal with sources of conflict and generate creative solutions, create a common
framework and point of reference, foster a collective vision, generate honest and enlightening
conversations and present their plans and objectives for the upcoming Rotaract year.

In keeping with the Rotary theme Be a Gift to the World and Rotaract District 7030s theme Are you
rota-readyYES the Rotaract Club of Tobagos theme for the year 2015/2016 is Discovering Gifts
Through Service. This theme challenges our members to discover and nurture their potential and
utilise their talents and expertise to enhance the lives of the members of the club and the community
through our avenues of service.
At our annual Handing Over Ceremony, outgoing President Stephan Sandy after two terms of service
passed on the torch to the incoming President Jasiyah Ibrahiim with her new board of vibrant
directors. The weekend ended with great memories, laughter and renewed vigour for the New
