DELPHOS Being human, at its
most elemental, is easy. Its a simple
matter of depending on your belief
system creation, evolution or a combination of the two. Its biology: mus-
cles and nerves and blood and bone and

helixed strands of DNA bearing 23 pairs
of chromosomes. Being humane, on the
other hand? Now thats a completely
different subject and one that a group of
St. Johns High School students cozied
up to earlier this week.

Hungry. They then created
a power point of their project which can be viewed

Relay hits goal of $72,000

DELPHOS Relay for Committee members had a surprise for those in attendance at Thursdays closeout meeting
for the 2015 event. This years Relay has surpassed the
$72,000 goal and is on track to hit $75,000.
We still have some outstanding monies and teams can
still fundraise, Coordinator Sandy Suever said. We can
turn in money for this years Relay up until Aug. 31.
The K&M Tire team Kruisin for a Miracle raised more
than $28,000 this year with a little help from a corporate
match. The team earned Emerald status, the second awarded
in Delphos.

DELPHOS Delphos is the place
to be when it comes to entertainment
during the 58th annual Canal Days
Festival. Sept. 18-20 begins three days
of free end-of-the-summer entertainment for the local area.
The weekend starts with the Limabased band Indoorfins on Friday night.
This local band has been navigating the waters of pop music in and
around the area, weathering the tide
of change, exploring the frontiers of

electronic entertainment, all the while
evading the shackles of international superstardom. Theyve played for
audiences in auditoriums, bars, reception halls, fairs, tailgates, country clubs,
high schools, camp grounds, even prisons. The Indoorfins have a fan base
which includes: Boomers, X-ers, and
Millennials. Their original songs have
been featured on several radio stations and theyve written songs for
the University of Pennsylvanias Penn
Reading Project, the Brooklyn Zoo, as

well as their song Amphibian Ark. With
their creative ambitions still intact, there
are plans of filming a documentary
of their 20 years together along with
videos to accompany their newest original music, currently being recorded,
all the while maintaining a rigorous
live schedule. Band members include:
Rob Layton, Doug Druckemiller, Dave
Robinson, Carl Smith and Sheila Smith.

away to rejoin their family
and friends for a day of
camaraderie.

baked goods booth opening at 8 a.m. The Historical
Room on the second floor
of the Parish Center opens

pond, inflatable activities, a
petting zoo and a general
store. A kiddie tractor pull
will be held from 2-4 p.m.
with winners advancing in
future competitions.
Inflatables will keep the
kids busy for hours with $10
all-day wrist bands.
Along with the family-style dinners of chicken
or beef served from 11 a.m.
to 2 p.m. and again from
4-7 p.m., hungry attendees
will find the lunch stand
with homemade soups,
sandwiches, French fries
and desserts from 11 a.m. to
10 p.m. and candy, caramel
apples, cotton candy and sno
cones will also be available.
The Brass Notes will provide musical entertainment
on the grounds.

Sign up ends Wednesday for garage sale maps
Wednesday is the last day for vendors to sign up and appear on the
map for the Landeck, Elgin and Venendocia joint garage sales set July
30 and 31 and Aug. 1.
A $10 charge is requested from each participant to pay for advertising. Remaining money will be given to the Venedocia Lions or
Landeck Community Committee for improvements in their communities.
Midget Football signups set

Signups for the Delphos Midget Football Association will
run from 6-7 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Stadium Park shelterhouse.
This is for anyone between the ages of 9-12 not currently
on a team. You must be 9 by or on Sept. 1 and no older than
12.

DELPHOS On July 1, officers took

a report from a male in the 200 block of
West Seventh Street in reference to items
missing from his residence.
On July 1, officers were dispatched to
the 900 block of East Second Street to
investigate an attempted Breaking and
Entering of a garage.
On July 2, officers met with a male in
the 200 block of West Clime Street who
reported that his bicycle was stolen.
On July 3, officers were sent to a business in the 900 block of East Fifth Street.
An employee told officers that the business received counterfeit money.
On July 4, officers took a report from a
female who received a threat from a male
known to her. The complainant wanted a
report so that she could seek a protection
order.
On July 7, officers took a report from a
complainant who reported that money was
stolen from her purse possibly while she
was shopping at a business on Elida Ave.
On July 7, officers took a report from
a female in the 500 block of North Canal
Street in reference to her sons bicycle
being stolen from her detached garage.
On July 8, officers were dispatched
to the 500 block of Lima Avenue in reference to a Menacing complaint. The
complainant told officers that his ex-girl
friend and her dad and texting him and
also making threats to him. The report
will be reviewed by the prosecutors
office for possible charges.
On July 10, officers were made aware
of a possible intoxicated driver on East
Second
Street.

investigation
found
probable
cause to arrest
Disalle for operating a motor vehicle

while intoxicated. Disalle will appear in

Lima Municipal Court to face the charge.
On July 11, a female reported that she
was threatened by another female and
wanted the incident documented.
On Sunday, officers met with a female
who reported that while she was out of
town for an extended period of time she
returned home to find that an unknown
person or persons had been in her residence and also had driven her vehicle.
Nothing was missing from either and the
incident remains under investigation.
On Sunday, officers were dispatched to
the 700 block of Wayne Street concerning
to a domestic violence incident between
a mother and her son. Officers arrived
and found that a 15-year-old juvenile had
caused physical harm to his mother. He
was taken into custody and transported
to the Van Wert County Sheriffs office
where he was then transported to Juvenile
Detention.
On Monday, an employee from a business on Gressel Drive came to the police
department to report a theft from the business. The incident remains under investigation and a possible suspect has been
identified.
On Monday, officers met with a male
complainant at the police department who
reported unauthorized charges made from
his bank account.
On Tuesday, officers were dispatched
to the 500 block of South Clay Street to
investigate a Domestic Violence incident
between a mother and her juvenile son.
Officers investigated the incident and
found that the juvenile had caused physical harm to his mother. He will appear
in Van Wert Juvenile Court to face the
charge.
On Tuesday, officers responded to the
1000 block of North Franklin Street to
meet with a female in reference to a
disturbance with her ex-boyfriend. Upon
officers arrival they found that the male
had left the residence. The complainant
wanted the incident documented so that
she can seek a protection order.

Members of the Delphos Canal Commission are very excited
about their newest project: rebuilding the Marguerite and bringing
her back to life. Trustee Linda Baker said President Lou Hohman
and Vice President Steve Dorsten have been busy placing the
numbered oak bottom ribs of the vessel in the order they were
found as well as building the ramps and platform for the display.
25 Years Ago 1990
Hard Time Bingo will once again be part of the Landeck
St. John the Baptist Churchs summer festival on July 29.

appearance by Happy the Hobo from Channel 55, a dance by

Kelly Van Schoyck will be entertaining the National Junior
Olympics July 25-29 in Lincoln, Neb. Van Schoyck qualified by
advancing through district, state and regional competition. Van
Schoyck is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Shaw of
Delphos.
50 Years Ago 1965
Open House will be held July 18 in the offices of the MetznerVan Pelt Insurance Agency, 155 W. Cleveland St. On June 1 of
this year the Metzner Insurance Agency, owned by John Metzner,
Sr., and John Metzner, Jr., merged with the Van Pelt Insurance
Agency, formerly located at 406 S. Pierce St., owned by William
Van Pelt, to form the new Metzner-Van Pelt Insurance Agency.
At a meeting of the 58 Alumni Club in the home of Darla
Rahrig, plans were made for a childrens picnic on July 20 at
Waterworks Park. There was work done on the historian records
by Mrs. Pat Pohlman. Co-hostess was Dorothy Metzger. Mary
Lou Wittler was a guest. The next regular meeting will be Aug.
11 with Cheryl Miller as hostess and Marge Price as assistant.
75 Years Ago 1940
A real estate deal has been completed whereby Charles H.
Myers, proprietor of Myers Cleaners, has purchased the garage
building at 414 N. Main St., from the heirs of the Lang estate. The
building is now occupied by a garage being operated by Frank
Will and John Bockey. Myers stated the building will be used for
housing his fleet of 19 trucks.
The Star Caf softball team, hitting often and timely, handed
Van Wert Kennedy Kits one of their worst defeats of the present
season Tuesday evening by the score of 9 to 2. While the Star
hitters were giving him a big lead, Bill Briggs scattered eight Kit
safeties over the seven innings. The two Van Wert runs scored in
the sixth inning on a walk, hit and a fielders choice.

VAN WERT A grow
operation in Van Wert was
raided Tuesday by the West
Central Ohio Crime Task
Force and Van Wert County
Sheriffs Deputies.
Sheriff Tom Riggenbach
announced on Wednesday
that Kory M. Stewart, 37, had
been arrested and charged
with illegal cultivation of
marijuana, a felony of the
third degree.
Deputies served a search
warrant at 721 N. Washington
St. in Van Wert where investigators found 61 marijuana
plants with a total potential
street value of $61,000. Also
seized were all lights and
equipment for the operation,
drug paraphernalia, a cell
phone, two laptop computers
and a small amount of marijuana.
According to Riggenbach,
a tip was received through
the Sheriffs Office website about a possible marijuana grow operation at that
address, leading to the search
warrant.
Stewart was taken to the
Van Wert County Correctional
Facility. He will be arraigned
in Van Wert Municipal Court.
Additional charges may still
be filed as the investigation
continues.
A nuisance abatement letter will be sent to the property
owner to make him or her
aware of what occurred on
that property in order to make
the property owner aware of
alleged illegal activity occurring at the owners property.
The letter directs property

owners to take action in the
hopes of stopping any future
illegal activity. Continued
illegal activity at the address
opens the door to possible
seizure of property.
Riggenbach noted that
anyone with information on
drug activity should contact
the Van Wert County Sheriffs
Office at (419) 238-3866
through the Van Wert County
Sheriff website. Those submitting a crime tip can remain
anonymous. Riggenbach stated that his office will continue to aggressively pursue all
drug tips received. Tips can

also be made anonymously
at Van Wert County Crime
Stoppers at (419) 238-STOP.
The West Central Ohio
Crime Task Force is made
up of officers from the
Van Wert County Sheriffs
Office,
Allen
County
Sheriffs Office, Paulding
County Sheriffs Office,
Lima Police Department and
several other agencies. The
West Central Ohio Crime
Task Force operates within a
multi-county area to combat
drugs and major crimes.
Delphos city workers have been investigating a leak along East Cleveland Street for several
weeks. Dave Wollenhaupt, above, called on Friday to let them know where it was. Wollenhaupt
had left home at 6 a.m. and his yard looked fine. When he returned several hours later, part of
his yard was missing. I had mowed right over that on Wednesday, Wollenhaupt said. Thats
kind of scary. Wollenhaupt said the sinkhole continued to grow throughout the morning.
Safety Service Director Shane Coleman said he called in an OOPS report so all the utilities
could be marked off and he hopes his workers can get the problem solved on Monday. We are
working all over town on problems, Coleman said. The rain is really bringing some of them
to light. City workers repaired a smaller sinkhole on Maple Street on Thursday and another

Kylie Gossett, daughter of Trent and
Amy Gossett, and Allison McClurg,
daughter of Gregg and Missy McClurg,
received a Bronze medal for creating the
FCCLA Chapter website. They designed the
website to inform students and community
about FCCLA, projects and service learning
projects, district and state involvement of the
members.
Their projects are only three of 32 national
STAR Events available to FCCLA students.
Medals were presented at a recognition
session honoring all participants on Thursday,
July 9, 2015. More than 7,700 members,
advisers, alumni, and guests from across the
nation attended this meeting. Approximately
4,100 students advanced from the local,
regional, and state level of STAR Events to
the national meeting.
FCCLAs STAR Events are based on
the belief that every student is a winner.
Competition, evaluation, and recognition all
stress cooperation as the basis of success.
Both youth and adults work together to manage the events and serve as evaluators of the
Leak, rain accelerate sinkhole
participants.
Throughout the year, FCCLA members
tackle issues such as teen violence prevention,
traffic safety, family issues, career exploration, and much more. FCCLA programs and
competitions enrich student learning, improve
self-esteem, and serve students with a range
of ability levels, economic situations, and
cultural influences.
Family, Career and Community Leaders
of America (FCCLA), is a dynamic and
effective national student organization that
helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family,
work, and societal issues through Family and
Consumer Sciences education. FCCLA has
nearly 155,000 members and more than 5,300
chapters from 50 state associations, Puerto

Saturday unveils a newer band to the entertainment lineup
for Canal Days. Venyx brings together opposing styles with
blended harmony, their powerful musicianship and high energy
level has been captivating audiences in and around Northwest
Ohio and the Put-In-Bay area since 2006, providing music
from a variety of genres including: Top 40, R & B, Pop and
Rock charts going back decades. Venyx is sure to keep everyone moving both on and off the dance floor. The band features
Jessica Stewart and Cynthia Zachrich on vocals, Matt Kretzer
on drums, Dan Stewart on bass/vocals and Mark Shumaker on
guitar. They have performed at other local festival, including
the Defiance and Findlay Rib Fests and Napoleon Rally in the
Alley. Venyx has also provided entertainment at Hollywood
Casino, both Toledo and Columbus locations, and have performed extensively throughout the Toledo Area.
Deuces Wild will wrap up Canal Days on Sunday with a
wide variety of Classic Rock. This local band will be sure to
keep the festivities going to the very last minute of the weekend. Performing extensively throughout the Tri-County area,
the members of this band are no strangers to the Canal Days
Festival. Featuring great talents from our own hometown area,

Right around first light early on Wednesday

morning, members of the schools football team
rousted themselves out of bed and made their
way to the high school. There they met Anthony
Coci, a seminarian appointed to Delphos by
Bishop Daniel Thomas of the Toledo Diocese,
for an exercise in humanity, in what it means to
be a man. Folded in their back pockets, many of
them carried three stapled-together pages, with
the top of the first page reading, Being a Man
for Others: Following the Example of Jesus
Christ.
Coci said that the initial idea for the program
came from the mother of one of the players
who approached Coci and suggested that the
team engage in some form of community service. Prayer and Cocis fundamental concerns
about perceived social dysfunctions divorce
and single-parenting led his list ultimately
inspired the creation of the program. Coci said
that it was his goal to address the whole being:
physical, spiritual, mental and pastoral.
It was basically a mini retreat for the football team to allow the guys to be fully integrated
in what it means to be a man, Coci explained.
It was a great way to begin the football season
and figure out our priorities: God, faith, family
and others. It helped the young men begin their
quest into adulthood.
The day began with agility exercises, with
the team as a whole warming up for the days
efforts. Then Coci, using Jesus Christ as a
model, expounded on the virtue of self-sacrifice
and the need to consider community. After that,
the young men hit the streets, some almost
literally.
Walking down Fifth Street carrying garbage
bags and wearing latex gloves over their hands,

a group of boys ranged along the sidewalk,
stooping every few feet to pick up trash. Two
of them, Lucas Metcalfe and Dominic Hines,
stopped at the corner of Main and Fifth and
meticulously gathered up shards of broken
glass.
The two are cousins and friends, incoming
freshmen and aspiring running backs and linebackers. Both regurgitated the theme of the day,
helping others; something theyd apparently
heard over and over. Even so, its obvious that
theyd given this some thought. This isnt about
learning how to help others, they said. That was
understood. Theyre beyond that. This is about
something more.
Just because we know how, it doesnt mean
that we do it, Hines said. This is more about
us getting out and doing it.
And they did. All of them, the whole team,
went out and did. They cleaned the communitys streets, helped out at the Canal Commission
Museum and lent a hand to local farmers, homeowners and businesses. At Vancrest Healthcare
Center, they husked corn, helped prepare breakfast and visited residents, praying the rosary
with those who were of a mind to do so. When
they were done, they regrouped and shared their
experiences, reflecting on what theyd learned.
Shortly after noon, they closed that portion of
their day with Mass.
All 50-some of them were stellar young
men, Coci said, remarking that he hopes to
continue the program, to expand it to include
not only more than just football players, but
more than just boys.
Ill have to pray about it and talk to some of
the girls, but service isnt gender specific.

I dont want to go. I dont want to
go anywhere, but I also dont want to
go there.
I am content with my sweats and
unwashed hair, curled up in the chair
staring mindlessly at the TV, waiting for
something good to happen.
I have embraced this bout of depression with open arms, and the apathy has
settled in again like fog hanging over the
city, the way it always does.
I tell myself I should do something, I
should go somewhere before I really go
crazy. I dont want to. The small amount
of energy it even takes to get ready, to
shower and blow-dry, and all the little
steps in between, it all just seems overwhelming. I just want to sit here and
merely exist.
But I make myself get ready. I force
myself to go through the motions of
looking presentable. It pains me every
step of the way, but I make myself.

On the way there I start to get nervous. Nervous of not knowing anyone,
but more nervous if I actually do know
someone.
Maybe I shouldnt go.
Yet, I pull up and there are three other
vehicles already there, waiting patiently
for my Impala to glide in beside them
in the allotted lines of the parking lot. I
somehow exit the car and pull open the
glass door of the building, following the
light to the basement.
We are all ages, from all different
backgrounds, with various amounts of
time under our belts. Some of us are
married, some of us are divorced, some
of us have grandkids. We are all so
differentyet so much alike. We tell
stories. Stories of heartache and stories
of courage. Stories of regret and stories
of overcoming. Stories of loss and sto-
ries of love.
The sadness in the eyes periodically
changes to happiness, eyes crinkling
at the corners in the process. We talk.
We listen. We nod. We understand. We
encourage. We hug. We tell each other it
gets easier, and then take that back, and
say maybe it doesnt get easierbut you
start getting used to it.
Before its over, I look down, studying my Keds on the tile floorI am so
glad that I put them on and came.
On the drive home I reflect on everything that was said. I feel that Ive made
some new friends. I am torn from my
reverie when I hear someone singing
aloud to the radio. Bleeding Love by
Leona Lewis is playing. Suddenly I realize that its me, accompanying her at the
top of my lungs. I have been propelled
into a great mood without even noticing.
And its all because of the meeting.

Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Nub Schnipke of rural Fort
Jennings will celebrate July 24..
Nub and the former Rita Ernst were married on July
24, 1965, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in
Ottoville by Monsignor JF Frommertz.
They are the parents of six children, Michael of Ney,
Rodney of Cloverdale, Terry of Columbus Grove, Chris of
Cloverdale and Marie J. Pierce and Bradley Scott are both
deceased. They also have 12 grandchildren, one step-granddaughter, one great-granddaughter and another due Oct. 1.
Nub retired as supervisor from Federal Mogul/
National Seal and currently works for Lock Sixteen,
delivering senior meals in Putnam County.
Rita is a retired educator and also works for Lock
Sixteen delivering meals to seniors in the Lima area. She
is also an OHSAA volleyball, basketball and softball
official.

Even when its just vacation

Oh my! I am running late getting this column out this week.
It seems like one week after another goes by bringing us closer
to Elizabeths wedding date. I am trying to not think of all that
needs to be done.
Elizabeth, 21, seems to be slowly gaining her strength back
from having double pneumonia. She is still coughing, so Im
hoping she continues to get better and not worse.
Yesterday she cut out Lovinas dress and Kevins pants and
shirt for the wedding. She also sewed Lovinas dress. The day
before, she sewed Verenas dress for the wedding. She had
already sewn Susan and Lorettas dresses. The only dress we
need to cut out now is mine.
I keep telling myself every day that I should get it sewn
before we get closer to the wedding day. I surely dont know
what I would have done if Elizabeth didnt help out with all
the sewing. She is a fast seamstress.
Susan, 19, hasnt been home since last Friday. She went
with Moses family on a fishing trip almost 500 miles from
here. We all miss her. It seems with only one of the children
not home, it makes such an empty space. We talked with her
for a few minutes several times when she called home. She
said she is having a great time but misses home.
Since Benjamin helps Mose with his sawmill, he doesnt
have to work this week. Benjamin and Joesph, 12, have been
getting things done outside that Joe wants done before the
wedding.
Benjamin is excited for his upcoming birthday. He will turn
16 on Tuesday, July 14. At age 16 in our community, they join
the youth group, so hes extra excited for this birthday.
Verena, 17, and Lovina, 11, were helping watch a booth
for a lady at the flea market yesterday. Loretta, 15, was home,
deep cleaning her bedroom. That meant that only two of my
five girls were home. As mentioned, Elizabeth was sewing
and I did the laundry, and then helped Loretta clean. I washed
the ceiling and upper walls with the wall mop. Overhead work
like that is hard for her to do. She was really worn out last
night. She doesnt let her handicap keep her down, but she
gets frustrated at times when she sees what the other girls can
do that she cant. God makes no mistakes, so we put our trust
in Him.
A reader asked what we do with all the dresses we sew
for all these weddings. We wear them to church or other
weddings where we dont have a special role to fill. Another
wedding invitation is posted on our refrigerator for Lyle and
Leah. Congratulations! Lyles dad is Joes cousin, Willis. He
lost his wife to cancer several years ago. Leahs dad, Ernest,
is my cousin.
Lovinas children, Lovina and Kevin are raising a kitten

whose mother was killed on the road. Lovina reports the

1 small can tuna in water (drained)
2 cups macaroni (cooked)
1 small onion (diced)
2 cans diced tomatoes
cup cheddar cheese, cut up in small chunks

Stir all together and bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

Addressing the issue of flooding and no-till residue

After heavy rains/flooding,
a common complaint is the
movement of corn stalks/residue off fields into surface
ditches. The 2015 Putnam
County Soil & Water District
transect shows that about
67 percent of corn acres are
planted to no-till soybeans
and only 6-7 percent of soybean acres are planted to true
no-till corn. The corn residue including corn leaves,
corn stalks, and corn cobs
and chaff may float off any
field once it becomes saturated with water. The practice of
no-tiling soybeans into corn
stalks followed by conventional tilled corn is called
rotational tillage.
Farmers have found that
there are economic benefits
to no-tilling soybeans into
corn stalks. It takes less fuel
for no-till, the corn residue conserves moisture in a
dry summer, reduces weed
growth, increases water infiltration, and improves drainage. Environmental benefits
of no-till soybeans into corn
residue include less soil erosion and sediment losses, less
nutrient runoff, and improved
soil productivity. Negative
side-effects of rotational tillage include corn residue that
is slow to decompose and
may float away during heavy
rainfall events. An understanding of soil ecology is
needed to explain why corn
stalks are slowly decomposing. Farmers have three tillage production systems to
consider: conventional tillage, no-till, and no-till plus
cover crops (Ecological or
ECO Farming).
In conventional tillage,
the soil is disturbed which
changes how the soil functions and changes the soil
ecology. Tillage is a destructive process that oxidizes
the soil organic matter and
releases nutrients to the soil.
In the short-term, crops benefit from the increased nutrient
availability, but long-term,
soils lose their structure, get
harder and denser and the
environmental consequences
may be severe. Advantages
of tillage include about
0.5 to 1.0 inches of water
removed from the soil profile. Soils in the spring tend
to warm up faster because
it takes 10 times more energy to warm up cold water

than it does air. Disadvantage
of tillage include decreased
soil structure, increased
soil compaction, decreased
water infiltrate, decreased
soil organic matter levels
due to excess oxidation, and
decreased soil-water storage.
Ecologically, a tilled system
is dominated by bacteria and
the soil functions less efficiently than a healthy soil.
Bacteria tend to decompose
soluble nutrients and sugars
but are not as efficient as
fungus at decomposing corn
stalks high in lining.
In no-till systems, the soil
is not disturbed; however; the
soil is still left bare in the winter. Advantages of this system include increased water
infiltration, some improvement in soil organic matter
levels, some improvement
in soil structure, and some
increased soil-water storage
capacity which increases
yields under dry conditions.
The soil is cooler in the
summer and may be wetter due to increased surface
crop residue. Disadvantages
include colder soils in the

spring because soils that
hold more soil moisture also
take more energy to warm
up in the spring. In reality,
there are very few long-term
no-till fields. Most farmers
practice rotational tillage
where soybeans are no-tilled
into corn stalks and then the
soybean stubble is chiseled
or turbo-tilled in the fall to
create a stale seed bed for
conventional corn the next
year. Turbo-tilling increases
soil warming in the spring
and increases faster nutrient
release. However it also creates a zone of surface compaction which limits water
infiltration. To make no-till
work efficiently, it takes
5-7 years to transition to
long-term no-till and most
farmers are not that patient.
Ecologically, true long-term
no-till soils have a better balance of bacteria and fungus
in the soil because fungal
populations recover due to
less tillage.
The third system is ecological farming or ECO
Farming which includes both
long-term no-till and cover

crops. The advantage of this

system is similar to no-till
except that the improvements
are more dramatic. Increased
soil organic matter levels due
to increased root turnover and
improved soil structure result
in decreased soil compaction, increased water infiltration and increased soil-water
storage. These soil changes
decrease surface water ponding and increase water storage in the soil profile which
may decrease flooding potential. With the increased pore
space, in the spring, soils
tend to be warmer due to
increased porosity and higher
aeration and live roots keep
the soil warmer. Ecologically,
the soil is alive with healthy
bacteria and fungus populations which decompose high
lignin crop residues like corn
stalks quicker.
Each system has an impact
on how long it takes for corn
stalks and corn residues to
decompose. In the next article, potential solutions will
be discussed to reduce corn
stalks in surface water.

wheat and potatoes.
Beef Barley Stew
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 pound boneless beef chuck, cut into 1-inch pieces
2 medium onions, sliced thin (2 cups)
3 medium-size carrots, sliced thin (1-1/2 cups)
3 ribs celery, halved lengthwise and cut into 1/2-inch
pieces
2-1/4 cups beef bouillon (3 bouillon cubes dissolved in
2-1/4 cups water)
1 8-ounce can tomatoes, undrained and chopped coarse
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup uncooked barley
In a 5-quart pot, heat oil over medium heat and brown
beef. Remove to a plate. Add onions, carrots and celery to pot drippings. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring often,
until beginning to soften. Add the bouillon, tomatoes
with their juice, chili powder, allspice and salt. Stir to
break up tomatoes and scrape up the browning bits on
the bottom of the pot. Bring to a boil. Return beef and
its juices to the pot and reduce the heat to low. Cover
and simmer for 1-1/4 hours, stirring once or twice. Stir
in barley. Cover and simmer for 40 to 45 minutes, stirring once or twice and adding more water as needed
(barley swells and absorbs liquid), or until the meat
and barley are tender. Serves 4.

Finding that golden ending

I asked myself today How

do I begin a discussion about
euthanasia, the act of putting
animals to death humanely?
This is a professional service
that I perform for animals
almost daily. In spite of the
deep sadness that accompanies the majority of euthanasias, I am able to separate
myself from that sadness by
realizing I am terminating
suffering or the ravages of
disease.
Because veterinarians perform cradle to grave care
for their patients that age
more rapidly than humans,
we get to know our patients
and their people quite well
and quickly. The depth of
love for and devotion to fourlegged family members is
revealed in different ways
and at different times by pet
owners. Thankfully, most
pet owners who seek regular
veterinary care are genuinely
and emotionally invested in
their pets.
As I tell my clients faced
with the decision to end their
pets life, letting go of that
adored pet is the greatest act
of love you can show them
when the time is appropri-
ate. I will assist in the decision-making process as needed by clarifying the choice
with a few questions:
Are your pets good days
(or good hours in a day) outnumbering the bad?
What do you think your
pets quality of life is?
Are you comfortable with
your pet as it is?
When faced with quantitating good times versus bad,
the decision becomes more
black and white for most
people. If they still arent
sure, I will ask them to use the
Penny Jar principle. They
are instructed to put a coin in
a Good Day jar when the
pet is having a good day,
and a coin in the Bad Day
jar when they are not. This
routine helps many justify the
decision while they are preparing themselves for it.
Some euthanasias are easier to perform than others,
technically as well as emotionally. Veterinarians often
develop strong, emotional
attachments to their patients,
for a multitude of reasons.
Caring for a patient that is
blessed to live a long life
commonly leads to a deeper
attachment to that pet.

Kalida rallies past Miller City, headed

to Coldwater Saturday vs. Cavaliers

Siebeneck was making his fourth
appearance at the plate in the District
2 ACME District championship game
against Miller City Wednesday night.
In his three previous appearances,
Siebeneck had taken pitches from Miller
City pitcher Calvin Stechschulte to left
field collecting a pair of singles.
With his team down a run to Miller
City and two runners on base in the
bottom of the seventh, Siebeneck once
again lined a pitch to left field. This time
Siebeneck ended up with a double that
scored both base-runners, giving Kalida
a 5-4 win over Miller City at Memorial
Field in Archbold.
The win sends Kalida (15-5) to the
state ACME tournament Saturday in
Coldwater where they will play the host
Cavaliers at 7:30 p.m.
The state ACME tournament is a single-elimination event this summer.
Miller City saw its summer end at
12-4.
It was quite a game, Kalida ACME

coach Gary Zeller said. Our bats came
in at the end. We played small ball, got
back in it and our pitching has not failed
us yet. We had a nice game. The team
came through tonight. They showed
their toughness tonight and Im proud of
them. We are going to state and that was
our goal all year.
The only lead Kalida had in the contest was the final score. The Wildcats
fell behind Miller City 2-0 before tying
the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning.
Miller City retook the lead at 3-2 and
4-3 only to see Kalida rally both times
from those one run deficits.
Miller City took the lead in the top of
the seventh as the first four batters in the
inning reached base.
Justin Schnipke opened the seventh
with a single to right and he took second base on an errant pickoff attempt.
Lane Hiltner followed with a liner to
right-center that just eluded the glove of
Kalida second baseman Kevin Hamburg
giving the Wildcats runners at the corner.
After Hiltner stole second base,
Kalida pitcher Noah Lambert walked
Corbin Niese and Jackson Lammers to

force in a run. That would be the only
run Miller City would get as Kalida
cut down a runner at the plate before
Lambert used a strikeout and groundball
back to the mound to end the inning.
With the bottom of the lineup up for
Kalida in the bottom of the seventh it
didnt take long for the Wildcats to get
a rally going.
Trent Gerding reached on an error at
shortstop and moved to second base on
a Hamburg sacrifice bunt. Austin Swift
followed with a walk before Siebeneck
lined a 1-1 pitch down the left field line
that scored Gerding from third base and
Swift from first base.
We told our kids, get a pitch you
like, Zeller said. I told them to relax. I
told them some of our mistakes tonight
were because we were trying to hard.
That last time I just told them to relax
and let it come to you. Kevin had two
nice sacrifice bunts that helped us to
some runs tonight. Thats the little stuff
between winning and losing.

to get that done.
The Cougars made sure
there was only one game
needed to be played at Ed

Elida Sports Complex.
Caleb Fetzer threw a dominant complete game, yielding five hits and one run, and
the Knights played uncharacteristically poor defense
six errors in a 6-1 Van
Wert win.
The
Cougars
(162) advance to take to
Bellefontaine at 2:30 p.m.
in the single-elimination (as
opposed to prior double-elimination formats) event.
This will be the first time
Van Wert made it to ACME
State since 1988.
Thats a great accomplishment for this team. Weve
done it with great pitching
and generally good defense
all summer, Van Wert coach
Todd Dunlap explained.
Caleb was outstanding
today. He struggled in a third
of an inning Wednesday but
we told him yesterday is yesterday and today is a new day.
He responded very well. He
had a couple of jams but got
out of them. We had a couple
of errors today but mainly
made the routine plays you
have to make to win at any
time. We left five on base the
first two innings but we kept
coming and finally got some
timely hits, plus Crestview
helped us with some errors.
Crestview (11-5) got a
2-out single by Colby Clifton
in the first.
Van Wert was the beneficiary a pair of leadoff errors
on balls hit by Ryan Stoller
and Nick Gutierrez in the first
but lefty starter John Krouse
who pitched Wednesday
got out of the inning with
no further damage.
The Cougars loaded
the bases in the home second. With one down, Evan
Williams got aboard via
an error and stole second.
Justice Tussings comebacker ended up with Williams
being tagged out at third.
Mason Carr singled to left
and Stoller walked. However,
the hosts left the bases juiced.
The Knights threatened in
the top of the third. With one
out, Darren Stout walked and
pinch-runner Alec Ingram
advanced on back-to-back
free passes to Jordan Miller
and Spencer Rolsten. A
comebacker by Clifton forced
Ingram at home and Krouse
bounced out to end the rebellion.
Fetzer singled with one
down in the Cougs third but
Josh Braun bounced into a
double play.
Brant Richardson got
aboard via a 2-out error in the
Cestview fourth.
The Cougars got on the
board with two in the fourth.
Jake Covey walked and
Williams sacrificed. Tussing

chopped a single into left to
end Krouses pitching stint
(for righty Stout). With Carr at
the bat, Tussing stole second
but Covey was caught too far
off third. However, a throwing error hit the runner and he
scored for a 1-0 edge. A wild
pitch moved Tussing to third
and an out later, Stoller beat
out an RBI infield hit up the
middle. He stole second and
after Gutierrez walked, a wild
pitch advanced both runners.
However, both were stranded.
The Knights halved their
deficit in the upper fifth.
Stout was safe on an error
and Miller shot a single to
left. Rolstens attempted sacrifice bunt was fielded by
Fetzer, who alertly got Stout
at third. Clifton hit a rocket
off the glove of third baseman Braun and into short left,
plating Miller. Rolsten was
thrown out trying to nab third
by Ryan McCracken, with
Clifton stealing second.
Braun beat out an infield
hit to short with an out in the
Van Wert sixth and advanced
on an error on a pickoff try.
Covey walked. Williams flied
out to center but Braun took
third. Covey stole second but
the Cougs left two more on.
Zach Simerman was
plunked to commence the
Knights sixth and Anthony
Lucente bunted him up.
Van Wert score four big
runs in the sixth. Carr grounded a single up the middle and
Stoller sacrificed; an error put
runners on the corners. Stoller
swiped second. An out later,
McCracken ripped a single
to center to plate Carr. Fetzer
ripped a hit into left that got
Stoller home from third. An
out later, after a wild pitch,
Covey smacked a 2-run hit
into left to make it 6-1 and
took second on the throw
home. Williams was hit by
a pitch and lefty Richardson
came out to get Tussing to
force Williams at second.
With one out in the top of
the seventh, Miller walked
and back-to-back slaps by
Rolsten (center) and Clifton
(left) loaded the bases. Krouse
went opposite way for a sure
run-scoring hit but leftfielder
Carr dove to snag it for the
out, then threw to Braun for
the inning-ending, game-ending and season-ending (for
the Knights) twin-killing.
The team that has come
to play all summer long didnt
show up today; thats the bottom line. We have no excuses, Crestview coach Doyle
Sheets explained. You cannot commit that many errors
and other mistakes against
a team the caliber of Van
Wert and expect to advance. I
know they will represent Van
Wert County and our District
very well. I expect them to
also do quite well next spring,
just like I expect our team
to do the same. Coach (Jim)
Wharton will have 15 talented kids to pick a lineup
from. About 12 of them have
baseball as their number one
sport and eight of them play
baseball only, which is generally not the situation for us.

semifinal was a long wait to
be played due to rainy weather that continues to plague
the area.
It was well worth it.
Not only was Wednesday
afternoon a beautiful and
mild summer day at Ed
Sandy Memorial Field at the
Elida Sports Complex but the
two WBL foes in a classic
pitchers duel went at it
for 10 innings.
The Cougars broke a 1-1
tie in the top of the 10th and
held on for a 2-1 victory in

the winners bracket.
Number 9 hitter Mason
Carr led off the Cougar 10th
with a free pass against
reliever Kaden Sullivan (2nd
inning). Ryan Stoller sacrificed but Carr was gunned
down at third on a grounder
to short by Nick Gutierrez.
However, the latter proceeded
to steal second and came in to
score on an infield hit to deep
short by Ryan McCracken;
shortstop Cam Clark kept the
ball in the infield but without
coming up with it cleanly, the
hustling Gutierrez slid across
the plate.
The Wildcats (14-4) went
down 1-2-3 in the home half

against southpaw reliever Ryan Stoller (in his 2nd
inning)
Ryan Gossard led off the
Bath home first against starter Josh Braun with a liner to
center but the Cougs turned
the first of their two double
plays.

SPENCERVILLE The Spencerville Board of Education

has named Tim Wilson as its new head track coach.
He takes over for Shane Strausbaugh, who resigned to take
a position at Toledo Rossford High School.
Wilson is a graduate of Spencerville High School and has
been an assistant track coach for the past three seasons. He
also spent five years as the head junior high track coach along
with coaching as a football assistant for the past seven seasons.
We are really pleased to have Tim Wilson as our new head
track coach. Tim is extremely motivated and has the necessary
skills to continue the strong tradition of our track and field
program, said John Zerbe, Athletic Director.

2-1 in a 10-inning contest in
game one Wednesday at Ed
Sandy Memorial Field, Bath
had to come back right away
and battle Crestview in an
elimination game.
This time, it wasnt the
pitchers duel that had happened earlier but a defensive
struggle, with the Wildcats
committing seven errors and
the Knights three.
The final Bath miscue
with the game being played
in darkening surroundings
led to an unearned run in the
bottom of the eighth and an
8-7 loss to the Knights.
The Knights, down 7-5 in
the home eighth, received a
leadoff walk to Darren Stout
and a hit by pitch (Jordan
Miller), ending reliever Chase
Clarks day on the mound (for
Logan Magram). A wild pitch
moved them both up and a
grounder by Spencer Rolsten
plated Stout for a 7-6 deficit.
Colby Clifton ripped a single
up the gut off the pitcher to
plate Miller from third. An
out later, he stole second and
Zach Simerman put runners
on the corners with an infield
nibbler to third. After he stole
second, Anthony Lucentes
grounder handcuffed shortstop Cam Clark for an error,
allowing Miller to touch the
dish with a game-winner.
Ryan Gossard commenced
the game against Crestview
southpaw Clifton with a
bloop to right and advanced
on a groundout and fly ball
to right.
Crestview went up 1-0 in
the home first against starter
Kaden Sullivan with a 1-out
walk to Rolsten, a wild pitch
and after a walk to Clifton,
a forceout grounder by Jon
Krouse; an error on the play
plated Rolsten. Simerman
doubled to left center but
both runners were stranded.
The Wildcats (14-5) got a

in the second. He was forced
out by Troy Korkate but an
error on the play moved him
to second. Magram walked
but Bath couldnt convert.

The Knights went up 2-0
in the second on a 1-out error
on Peyton Knittles grounder,
a steal, an error on the play
and a 2-out single to left center by Miller.
Bath took a 3-2 lead in
the top of the third. After
a diving catch by centerfielder Brant Richardson
on Gossards leadoff liner,
Cam Clark doubled to right
center; he advanced on
a 2-out passed ball. Dylan
Burkholder walked and
Andrew Jordans sharp hit
to left plated Clark. An error
on Sullivans grounder scored
Burkholder and put Jordan at
third. He scored on Korkates
misplayed grounder and a
double-steal moved Sullivan
and Korkate up a base, where
they remained.
The home team made
it 4-3 in the third. Clifton
blooped one to right but was
forced out on a sacrifice try
by Krouse. Simermans double to left moved pinch-runner Jake Painter to third and
both scored on an infield
hit to deep short by Brant
Richardson. After a burglary
of second, Knittle walked but
both were stranded.
Gossard lined a 1-out
single to center in the Bath
fourth and Cam Clark ripped
one to center. Jordan Berens
forced the latter at second and
in turn was picked off first by
Clifton.
Miller commenced the
Crestview fourth with a
shot to left and advanced on
grounders by Rolsten and
Clifton. Krouse walked but
both remained on base as that
started an 8-out string for
Crestview batters.
Bath tied it at 4 in the
fifth. With two gone, Sullivan
ripped a knock to center,
reached third on Korkates
single to center and scored
on Magrams knock to left
center, with the other runners
moving up a base.
Leading off the Wildcat
sixth, Gossard greeted lefty
reliever Krouse with a line
single to center, a 2-out burgled base and a liner that
hugged the left-field line by
Burkholder.

LAKE ERIE
The daily bag limit for walleye in Ohio
waters of Lake Erie is 6 fish per angler; minimum size is 15 inches. The daily bag limit
for yellow perch is 30 fish per angler in all
Ohio waters. The trout/salmon daily bag
limit is 5 fish per angler; minimum size is 12
inches. The black bass (largemouth and
smallmouth bass) daily bag limit is 5 fish per
angler with a 14-inch minimum size.
Western Basin
Walleye: Have been caught S of the Gravel
Pit, W of West Sister Island (within 2 miles)
and around Gull Island and Kelleys Island
shoals. Trollers are using spoons behind
divers and on worm harnesses with inline
weights or bottom-bouncers. Casters are using
weight-forward spinners or mayfly rigs.
Yellow Perch: Have been caught near the
Toledo harbor light, S of the Gravel Pit, W
of West Sister Island, near the turnaround
buoy of the Toledo shipping channel, between
Rattlesnake and Middle Bass islands, N of
North Bass Island and off the Marblehead
Lighthouse. Perch-spreaders or crappie rigs
with shiners fished near the bottom produce
the most fish.
Smallmouth/Largemouth
Bass:
Smallmouths have been caught along the
shorelines of the Bass Islands. Largemouths
have been caught on the main lake shoreline
around Catawba and Marblehead and in harbors in the same area. Bass have been caught
on tube jigs, crankbaits and drop shot rigs.
Central Basin
Walleye: Have been caught at the weather buoy near the Canadian border, E of the
sandbar, N of Gordon Park at 45-60 feet of
water and N/NE of Wildwood between 40-50
feet. Good fishing was reported N/NW of
Conneaut in 45-60 feet and NE of Fairport
in 71 feet. Anglers are trolling dipsy divers,
planer boards with divers and spoons or blue,
purple, gold, pink and red worm harnesses.
Yellow Perch: Anglers are catching fish 1
mile NE of Vermilion, N of Gordon Park in
40-50 feet and N/NE of Wildwood Park in
31-50 feet. Good fishing was reported 6-7
miles N of Conneaut in 62-65 feet and NE of
Ashtabula in 61 feet. Fishing from shore has

Hatcherys Beginning Fly-Fishing Clinics
FINDLAY - Anglers interested in learning
the art of fly fishing and practicing their skills
on a half-mile section of Cold Creek at the
Castalia State Fish Hatchery in Erie County
are encouraged to enter a lottery for beginning
fly-fishing clinics, according to the ODNR.
There are 125 slots available for the popular program. Sessions will be held on Fridays
from Sept. 4 through Oct. 9, with the exception of Sept. 25. Deadline for submitting a
lottery entry is Aug. 20.
In addition to instruction by DOW staff
and volunteers, attendees will be able to test
their newly-acquired skills by fishing for the
abundant rainbow trout found in Cold Creek
and may also encounter an occasional brown
trout.
Instruction will be from 8 a.m.-noon or 1-5
p.m. on Sept. 4, Sept. 11, Sept. 18, Oct. 2 and
Oct. 9.
To apply, applicants must submit a postcard listing their: name, address and phone
number. The applicant may bring one guest
but the guests name must be listed on the
postcard. Only one postcard per applicant
is allowed; no duplicates may be submitted.

of Wildlife District Two, 952 Lima Avenue,
Findlay, OH 45840 Attention: Linda Ringer.
Successful applicants will receive an
assigned session date and time. Permits are
non-transferable. All anglers age 16 and older
are required to have a valid Ohio fishing
license. Funds generated from the sale of
fishing licenses go toward conserving and
restoring habitat, enforcement of fishing regulations, hatchery operations, fish stocking
in public fishing areas, and enhancement of
research and educational outreach.

Lambert picked up the win as he went
the distance in allowing four runs on eight
hits with two strikeouts and three walks. He
stranded eight runners and got key ground
balls in clutch situations to force three runners
at the plate.
Noah battled hard tonight, Zeller said.
We had a couple of breaks that didnt go our
way, but he battled through it. He showed he
was a fighter and kept us in the game. Noah
pitched a nice game.
Siebeneck led the Wildcats with three hits
while Trevor Maag had a triple and Swift a
double.
Stechschulte took the loss, allowing five
runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and
two walks.
Hiltner and Jacob Schimmoeller both had
two hits for Miller City, who left eight on
base. They also had three nabbed at the plate.
Miller City grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third
as Hiltner opened with a single and moved to
second on an error. Corbin Niese reached on

an infield error and both advanced a base on
a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Schimmoeller
delivered a 2-run single to left field for Miller
Citys 2-0 lead.
Kalida tied the game in the fifth as Lambert
reached on an error and Gerding followed
with a single to right field. They moved up on
a sacrifice bunt by Hamburg before a groundout by Swift and a single to left by Siebeneck
tied the game.
Miller City regained the lead in the top of
the sixth. Jacob Kuhlman had a 1-out single,
took second on a throwing error and came
around to score on two wild pitches.
Kalida tied the game in the bottom of the
inning as Trevor Maag was hit by a pitch with
one out and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Austin Klausing followed with a run-scoring
single to center field.

Our defense was outstanding. Our pitchers made

some great plays themselves
on comebackers and Ryan
made a diving catch in the
eighth that was crucial, Van
Wert ACME coach Todd
Dunlap acknowledged. We
preach making the routine
plays and letting the great
plays come to us. Josh and
Cam Clark both did outstanding jobs on the mound; when
they got into jams, they made
great pitches to get out. Our
attitude offensively is get on,
get them over and get them in
any way you can.

One of the supreme ironies of human nature is the fact that being overly concerned about
our own happiness diminishes it, while working diligently to improve the welfare of others usually adds to our own happiness. And, while it is true that we should be the primary
caretakers of our own welfare, and should tend to our own health, education and well-being
with care, it is still the case that being overly concerned with our own happiness almost
always interferes with it. Happiness is usually a byproduct of other activities. Perform your
work well and youll probably feel good about it. Cultivating your relationships with family and friends pays big dividends in terms of our happiness. Limit your desires for material
things. Greed and envy are preventable obstacles to happiness; money and material things
are a very fleeting source of satisfaction. So, do what you can to help others, and do it with
a pure heart, seeking only the good of the other and not your own.

You know its bad when the ducks are
upset by the amount of rain we are getting.
The second to last week in June and last week,
they abandoned the canal and were spread out
in the huge puddle in my and my neighbors
yards. The canal was moving at a pretty good
clip and I think they were struggling to tread
in one spot.
When its not flooded, my yard looks
great. The grass is velvety green and the flowers and shrubs are full and lush. I think at this
point in time, I would welcome the necessity
to water on occasion.
The rain has also caused another problem
mosquitoes! There are hoards of them
everywhere! I know the city sprayed this
week but I think they may have to come back
for another pass. There are enough of them to
carry someone away!
I know people are looking up at the skies
and imploring the Almighty to stop the insanity. I have thrown up a few pleas myself. I
have developed a new issue in the basement
when we have a downpour a hole in the
wall. I was checking the sump pump a few
Saturdays ago and I heard it kick off but still
heard water running. Curious, I went down
into the basement and there was this small
gusher of water coming in. Not good.
This brings me to an episode of Inside
the Actors Studio with Jim Parsons, Sheldon
from Big Bang Theory.
A repellent tale

If you like Sheldon you would have loved
this episode. Parsons got down to the nitty
gritty with James Lipton. I also learned
Parsons is the star of the Broadway play An
Act of God. The man who plays Sheldon
Shellie Cooper scientist extra extraordinaire is God.
While the two conversed at length about
his role as Sheldon, they of course got into
what its like to play God. Parsons quoted
some of the dialogue from the play and interjected just the right amount of wink and nod.
If I were going to New York, I would wait
in line on the sidewalk for a day, maybe two
to get tickets. He had me at
Hello, this is God.
The gist of the play is that while God is
omnipresent and creator of heaven and earth
and beyond, he doesnt really involve himself
in the general day-to-day operations down
here on earth. For example: I know this may
come as a shock to some but he claims he is
not a Yankee fan! Also, hes not a Dodger
or anything else. Hes a little busy with more
important things.
So while we eye our rain gauges and roll
up our pant legs in our basements, know that
while he enjoys talking to us, we need to
get busy and fix the sump pump ourselves
because the rain is going to keep coming.

Are Greeces woes an omen to U.S.?

Someone once said: Blindness
to unintended consequences is typical of government engineering. In
other words, good intentions rarely
advance as planned, or go unpunished.
Its hard for Americans to be
sanctimonious about Greeces $320
billion debt woes because without the ability to print unlimited
amounts of money, the U.S. would
have a hard time explaining how it
plans to repay its own $18.5 trillion
(and growing) national debt.
Like Greece, we are a country
run by politicians eager to tell voters what they want to hear about
national finances. Pols on both sides
of the aisle are afraid to propose
solutions to the soaring debt obligations for fear of repercussions from
powerful special interest groups.
Theyd rather pass the problems on
to future generations.
Both the U.S. and Greece have
aging populations. By contrast,
70% of Irans population is under
age 35. Could this be a reason our
government is allowing millions of
young, illegal immigrants to flood
across our borders? We need them
to become workers and taxpayers.
According to federal government economists, our annual health
care spending has increased nearly
tenfold to $1.1 trillion since 1985,
and now accounts for roughly 30%
of the annual budget. With the aging
population, that figure will continue
at an unabated rate.
Think about these staggering
consequences: an average couple
who retired in 2010 probably paid
$122,000 in Medicare taxes while
working. They are likely to receive
$387,000 in Medicare benefits. Do
the math. Is this sustainable?

Social Security is in better
shape, barely. At current rates, it
too will have to start drawing down
reserves, which are represented by
government IOUs, unless reforms
are put into place. If not, the annual
budget deficits will grow.
Back in 1967, President Lyndon
Johnson told Americans Medicare
would only cost $500 million a
year. While that was real money
back then, who was he kidding?
At the same time, a more realistic
House Ways and Means Committee
projected a cost of $12 billion
annually by 1990. That proved to
be very conservative, because by
1990, Medicare cost $110 billion.
By 2014, the cost had ballooned
to $600 billion. See where this is
going?

What events could trigger economic havoc? How about a worldwide stock market correction of

with respect to income equality,

interest rates or frustration with
Washington gridlock.
There could be an escalation
of military hostilities with multiple fronts, a continuation of moral
corruption and fraud of government
programs or a tsunami of cyber

grid failures that paralyze the northeastern quarter of the country for a

We do know, however,

Bell account received a rude surprise: It was blocked because
five iPhones had been bought in
her name without her knowledge
and the bill for the $2,300 purchase had yet to be paid.
A consumer in Canfield was
shocked to learn that a woman in
Georgia cashed a $5,000 check
for a loan that a payday lender
had issued in his name.
When Target asked a
Columbus consumer about a line
of credit he supposedly opened,
he checked his credit report and
discovered several other credit
cards he never applied for had
been issued in his name.
After these three consumers
contacted our office, we were
able to resolve their cases and
collectively save them more than
$13,000. But their stories, and
others like them, give a glimpse
into why our volume of identity theft complaints more than
doubled from 2013 to 2014, and
why identity theft joined our list
of top ten consumer complaints
for the first time last year.
In 2012, I created a consumer Identity Theft Unit to help
victims rectify the effects of
identity theft. Since then weve
received more than 3,300 complaints and helped adjust or clear
about $900,000 from consumers accounts.
While identity theft is often
a random crime of opportunity, breaches in both commercial
and government data bases have

emerged as new and significant
dangers. Data breaches dont
always result in identity theft,
but they do put individuals at
greater risk.
Since 2005, nearly 5,000 data
breaches have compromised
more than 815 million records
containing consumers sensitive
financial information. If a Social
Security number is involved, a
full-blown identity theft can cost
a consumer an average of $5,100.
Congress has contemplated passing a national law on
data breach notification and
data security. However, state
laws already in place to protect
consumers from data breaches
and identity theft should not be
limited or preempted by federal
legislation.
Thats why earlier this
month I signed a letter with 46
other attorneys general asking
Congress to maintain states
authority to enforce data breach
and security laws. Our letter
urged Congress to preserve
existing breach notification
requirements under state law
and not to hinder states that are
helping their residents by preempting state data breach and
security laws.
We want to keep the flexibility we need to effectively assist
consumers who contact us from
Cincinnati, Canfield, Columbus,
and every other corner of the state.

Recent economic indicators continue

to confirm how disappointing our recovery from the 2007-2009 financial crisis
has been. In fact, economists say it is the
weakest recovery since World War II. In
the first quarter of this year, the economy
actually shrank by 0.2 percent. The official
unemployment rate doesnt account for the
millions of discouraged workers who have
given up looking for jobs, dropping the
labor force participation rate to its lowest
level since 1977. Incomes are flat, even
declining on average. Combined with the
rising costs of health care (accelerated by
the Affordable Care Act), food, electricity,
and education, the middle class squeeze
is very real. And the American people are
feeling the effects.
Millions are struggling just to get by
and many working families are wondering when things will finally pick up. It is
clear that our economy needs a shot in the
arm. One of the reasons the economy has
been so sluggish is because of burdensome
regulations, many at the federal level, that
are overwhelming business owners, stifling
investment, and preventing the creation of
good paying jobs.
When I travel the state, whether I am
listening to construction workers, manufacturers, farmers, health care providers,
energy producers or retailers, I hear an
overarching theme: government regulations are standing in the way of investing
in companies and workers. If we are going
to turn things around and create more and
better paying jobs, we will need to knock
down these unnecessary barriers so that our
economy can reach its full potential. With
this goal in mind I have offered a series of
regulatory reforms that will kick-start our
economy and create more opportunities for
those who are looking for work.
One of the major roadblocks to jobs
right now is our federal permitting process, which is filled with uncertainty, high
liability. The
federal government makes
businesses
run a gauntlet of review
and approvals
causing major
delays, particularly in the construction and

energy industries. Think of an
energy project, whether it is oil and gas or
solar and wind production, or construction
of a new commercial building. Its not
unheard of for a specific project to require
dozens of federal permits with little coordination between agencies. These delays
and costs have had a negative impact on
job creation.
America has fallen behind in this area
as other countries have streamlined their
permitting and made their projects more
attractive to investors. In fact, based on a
respected international survey, the United
States has fallen to 41st in the world in
ability to get a permit to build something. It is long past due to improve the
way we authorize permits. Fortunately, I
have authored a solution the Federal
Permitting Improvement Act.
This important legislation will streamline the permitting process in three ways.
First, it will ensure better coordination by
establishing a lead agency to set a permitting timetable and encourage stronger
cooperation between state and local permitting authorities. Second, it will foster
greater transparency by creating a public,
on-line dashboard to monitor progress
while requiring agencies to accept comments from stakeholders to address public concerns early on. Finally, it installs
important litigation reforms by reducing
the statute of limitations on lawsuits challenging permitting decisions from 6 years
to 2 years.

vote, and I am hopeful we can get it passed

I also recently introduced the
Independent Agency Regulatory Analysis
Act, a bill that will rein in the power of
independent agencies to declare costly new
rules. Most federal agencies are required to
weigh the costs and benefits of major regulations. However, independent agencies
are immune to those requirements despite
regularly issuing regulations with major
economic impacts. Examples of independent agencies include the Consumer
Financial Protection Bureau, the Security
and Exchange Commission, the Federal
Communications Commission, and the
National Labor Relations Board. These are
influential agencies with a lot of control
over major sectors of our economy and
they should not be exempt from common
sense requirements that protect business
owners and wage earners. That is why I
authored a bipartisan approach to add new
accountability measures to correct this gap.
For any new regulation that has an
economic impact of $100 million or more,
the bill requires the analysis of costs and
benefits as well as consideration of any less
costly alternative. These analyses will be
overseen by the Office of Information and
Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), which currently does this for all the executive agencies.
There is simply no reason to issue new
costly regulations if better options exist.
To put it simply, these bills I have authored

Certain pets also remind us of our own

beloved pets, past or present. And, some
patients are in the too good to be true category, either because they are incredibly cute
or beautiful, but mostly because they are really cooperative, extremely forgiving, and easy
patients to care for.
What prompted me to write this column
was what I consider perhaps The Most
Perfect Euthanasia of all.
I have been caring for Darla, a muchloved truly golden Golden Retriever for
over 13 years. Her 14th birthday would have
been on July 31. Her people always gave her
the best of love and veterinary care as recommended. She earned her frequent flyer
card at our hospital as a regular on the toenail
trimming circuit as well. We always knew
when Darla was in the building because she
would announce herself with several jubilant
woofs upon entering the door. Plain and
simple, Darla was a true delighthappy,
beautiful, loving and always forgiving.
Like many senior pets, Darla began to be
plagued by tumors when she was 11 years
old. Her attentive owners expressed their
concerns expediently as we began a journey
of removing and biopsying three different
cancers. While her first cancer was a more
benign tumor called squamous papilloma, her

began having difficulty breathing, especially
when she exerted herself.
With Darlas welfare always at the forefront of their loving care, her owners decided
it was time to say good-bye to Darla, and her
departure was scheduled to occur at her home.
On the most perfect evening, in a picturesque
backyard with more than beautiful landscaping surrounding a lovely pond, I assisted
Darla across The Rainbow Bridge after she
ingested one last handful of favorite treats,
with her people by her side. I am absolutely
certain Darla was smiling as she left her earthly life and went to Heaven.
Do I enjoy euthanasias? No. But, this was
as close to perfection as it gets. Everyone
should have a Golden Ending on a Golden
Pond.
