BANCASSURANCE
The sales of insurance and other same type of product through a bank is called Bancassurance.
This can help the bank's customer in some situations;
e.g.
When a bank requires life insurance for those receiving a mortgage loan the customer could
purchase the insurance directly from the bank.
This is a partnership between a bank and an insurance company whereby the insurance company
uses the bank sales channel in order to sell their products.
If a bank wants to sell insurance product then they have to obtain a C.C.A (Composite corporate
agent) certificate from IRDA.
Classification of Money
RBI classified the supply of money in the following four categories :-
M1 (narrow money) = Currency with the public + Demand deposit of banks + Other deposits with
RBI.

A cheque is defined in the Negotiable Instrument Act,1881, whereas a demand draft has
not be precisely defined in the Negotiable Instrument Act.
A cheque can be made payable either to a bearer or order but a demand draft is always
payable to order of a certain person.
In a cheque, the drawer and the drawee are different persons. But in a draft both the
drawer and the drawee are the same bank.
A cheque can be dishonored in case of insufficient balance in the account whereas a draft
cannot be dishonored.
Payment of a cheque can be stopped by the drawer of the cheque, whereas the payment of
a draft cannot be stopped.
Mortgage

It is transfer of the interest in the property without actual sale suggesting that the
ownership has not changed. Possession remains with the owner that is the mortgager and
need not be transferred to the mortgagee i.e, the creditor.
12
2.
The property to be mortgaged has to be clearly identifiable with all the specific
marks as available in the revenue records.
3.
4.
The mortgagee has the right to sell/disposal of the mortgaged property to recover
its dues in the event of non-payment by the borrower who is the mortgager.
5.
6.
In case of limited companies the mortgage has to be registered with the registrar
of companies within 30 days from the date of creation.
7.
The mortgage deed is cancelled once the mortgage money which is the
aggregation of the loan amount with interest is fully paid.

Life Insurance in its modern form came to India from England in the year 1818.
Oriental Life Insurance Company started by Europeans in Calcutta was the first Life
Insurance Company on Indian Soil.
Bombay Mutual Life Assurance Society heralded the birth of first Indian life Insurance
Company in the year 1870.
Bharat Insurance Company (1896) was also one of such companies inspired by
nationalism.
The Swadeshi Movement of 1905-1907 gave rise to more insurance companies. The United
India in Madras, National Indian and National Insurance in Calcutta and the Cooperative
Assurance at Lahore were established in 1906.
In 1907, Hindustan Cooperative Insurance Company took its birth in one of the rooms of
the Jorasanko, house of the great poet Rabindranath Tagore, in Calcutta.
The Indian Mercantile, General Assurance and Swadeshi Life (later Bombay Life) were
some of the companies established during the same period.
The Life Insurance Companies Act, 1912 made it necessary that the premium rate tables
and periodical valuations of companies should be certified by an actuary. But the Act
discriminated between foreign and Indian companies on many accounts, putting the Indian
companies at a disadvantage.
INFLATION
Description of inflation
Inflation: A general and sustained rise in the price levels of goods and services
for a given period. Inflation can be described as a decline in the real value of
moneya loss of purchasing power in the medium of exchange. When the
general price level rises, each unit of currency buys fewer goods and services.
47
In simple terms, inflation is a situation where too much money chases too few
goods .
Characteristics:
o It is a continuous process.
o It refers to a rise in prices in general.
o It involves a considerable increase in prices.
o It causes a decline in the purchasing power of money
Causes of inflation
Increase in the money supply.
Increase in the input costs.
Market failure.
Imported inflation.
Weaker exchange rate.
Decline in productivity.
Trade unions.
48
money from the commercial banks to the public gets reduced. Therefore, inflation
is controlled to the extent it is caused by the bank credit.
Stagflation
Hyperinflation
Demand-pull inflation:
Cost-push inflation:
also called "supply shock inflation," caused by drops in aggregate supply due to
increased prices of inputs, for example. Take for instance a sudden decrease in
49
the supply of oil, which would increase oil prices. Producers for whom oil is a
part of their costs could then pass this on to consumers in the form of increased
prices.
