Logos
Description:

Three logo variations for the same company.

Date:
6/06/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create a variety of logos to fit a company or

personal image using Illustrator.

Process:

I first sat down and started to draw different

and let my mind wander. I went from designing
a tiger face, to a stereo, and then to headphones.
I had a pretty good idea of where I wanted to
take this design, so I opened Adobe Illustrator
and began to search for a good sans serif font
that would work with the fluid circular feel I was
looking for. From the very start I envisioned my
design as a simple monochromatic red scheme
that would be both bold and simple. I wanted to
incorporate the headphones and cable into the
design so I created the headphones from a few
simple shapes and moved them to the proper
place. I then refined my image and made sure
the strokes were wide enough that they wouldnt
lose their properties when made smaller such as
a business card, but thin enough to not distract
too much. I then copied the design and changed
the colors to give variety and to see how the
design would look with different backgrounds
and color schemes

Event ad
Description:

Date:

Program(s)/Tools:

Microsoft Word
Epson Scanner
PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter)

Objectives:

Find, scan and import a high-quality image.

Create a full-bleed design
Use text boxes for layout in Word.
Insert and edit images in Word.

Process:

I scanned the image of the guy breathing fire,

and then used a Word image effect to delete most
of the background which consisted of graffiti.
I then added boxes with the complementary
blue and orange color scheme. I chose the title
to match the wording on the jacket and add
contrast to the body text. I was honestly surprised
by how much I could do Microsoft Word instead
of much higher end designing programs such as
the Adobe Creative Cloud.

Imaging
Description:

A personally taken photograph that has been

edited/formatted using Photoshop.

Date:
5/23/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Canon Camera
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills, take a quality

image, download it, and then Size and crop the
image. Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue
and saturation levels.

Process:

I first looked at the color wheel and the different

color schemes found in the Visual FOCUS book
and tried to envision a scene where I could
use those colors. I had in mind exactly that
I wanted, so I set out to buy a gold piece of
paper and to find some brick buildings. I then
called up my wife and told her to meet me, and
to wear something blue. I had a camera that I
checked out from the McKay Library and took a
few photos around 10 am where the sun wasnt
too harsh or exactly over head. I imported
the photo into Adobe Photoshop and used the
levels, sharpness, saturation, and color balance
features. I then added the yellow and blue
rectangles on the side of the photo to overlay the
bricks and be consistent with the square shapes
in the design. I added a grunge design and
overlaid that on the blue and yellow bricks to
give realism to those shapes.

Montage
Description:

An insperational montage made by the blending

five images, and the use of typography.

Date:
5/30/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn to manage Photoshop layers.

Learn to blend images together using masks.
Use filters and apply appropriate typography.

Process:

I have always loved the story of the woman

who was caught in adultery and how Christ
immediately showed love and began to help her
on the path back to heaven. I wanted this story
to be a moder portrayal of this event. I found
this photo of a man praying on a bench in black
and white, and I thought it would be fun and
challenging to add color. I then masked it out in
Adobe Photoshop and placed Christ behind him.
I masked out the woman along with everything
else and left the Lord to look at him in concern.
I knew that I wanted them to be in a garden of
some sort, because it was in a garden where the
Lord made it possible for us to return to Him. I
also added a temple in the background to signify
that it is through covenants that we can make
promises to obey the Father and hopefully one
day live once again in His presence. Finally,
I added a photo of parchment paper to give
texture and a sort of warming filter as well as a
quote relating to the topic.

Brochure
Description:

A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Date:
7/11/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.

Create an original, new logo and use it in a
brochure incorporating at least 4 quality images.
One should be clipped in Photoshop and textwrapped in InDesign so the text follows the
cutout shape of the image.

Process:

I was originally going to make a brochure

about a travel agency but decided I didnt like
it, so during class one day I thought of making
a brochure about the Hulk. Being the Hulk, of
course the thing he struggles with is his anger.
I started sketching ideas of fists and eventually
transferred them to Adobe Illustrator. I originally
had images of realistic hands and people instead
of the ones you see now, but because I wanted to
go for a more comic book feel to it, I decided to
do a flat design brochure and make everything
a cartoon. I put a lot of hours into drawing these
characters and objects into the figures that I
wanted them to be. Overall, I am pleased with
the way it came out and the way that it opens up
uniquely tells this story.

Business card

using a personally created logo.

Date:
6/13/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal

image.
Design consistent layouts for a business card
and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process:

I started off drawing circles and noticed after

drawing a longer oval, that it started to look
like a duck. I ran with the idea and opened up
Adobe Illustrator to create a duck. Originally
the duck was designed in a monochromatic
blue color scheme. I felt that the design needed
to stand out a little more, so I added more color
and incorporated the duck into a letterhead and
business cards.

Flier
Description:

Black & White promotional flier to promote a

graduate leadership conference.

Date:
5/9/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Apply design principles and appropriate

typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve
basic flier layout.
Create a project folder with image, logo and
InDesign document to keep links intact.

Process:

I first created some sketches of my layout.

Then I used my sketch as a guide to create this
layout in Adobe InDesign. I used black boxes for
repetition and contrast. I also emphasized one
word in my title for more contrast, and to create
a good focal point. I left white space and kept
my body copy small. I was given the image, logo,
and content for this flier.

Web Page

created logo.

Program(s)/Tools:
Noteplus++
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for

a web page.
Write content to describe the process of creating
logo and how it appeals to a target audience.
Design a web page using HTML to display a logo
and content about the logo.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic
understanding of CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to
attach as one file.

Process:

I opened up Noteplus++, a html and css editing

program and used the basic format given to us
from the COMM 130 class and changed a few
details. I wanted to have the same feel as the
logo so I used the same red and white for the
body background copy and title. I added a
picture that I created with music notes for the
background to give it a bit more variety. I used
Adobe Photoshop to do this as well as create the
buttons at the bottom that links.
