Twins bubble over

By Kate Taylor

A big case of double-trouble has hit Ballan.

Eight sets of twins have been born in the Ballan area within
the past year, prompting the creation of a new playgroup in
the town to cater for the demand.
Moorabool Shire Council Mayor, and soon-to-begrandfather, Paul Tatchell, said the twins created a need for a
playgroup close to home - so the Ballan Multiples Playgroup
was born!
Multiple births can give added challenges to families, and
playgroups are a great way for parents to meet others and
share their experiences, he said.
Cr. Tatchell appeared live on the breakfast TV program
Sunrise on Thursday July 16, where he had co-hosts Samantha
Armytage and Natalie Barr in fits of laughter over Ballans
recent bumper crop.
Theres been a fair bit of humour around the town in terms
of the cold weather and why were having all these twins,
but ultimately everywhere we go we appear to be seeing
double, he said.
Weve had unprecedented growth externally and now it
appears were having it internally. I think a lot of people are
appreciating that peri-urban regions provide great liveable
space for families and children, a safe place to grow up and it
creates a community atmosphere which is fantastic, he said.
The Ballan Multiples Playgroup is held weekly at Ballan
Primary School, with the group receiving initial support
from the Moorabool Shire Council Early Years Team.
There is also a multiples playgroup that runs in Bacchus
Marsh each Thursday at St Andrews Church in Bacchus
Marsh.

Resurrecting the devils of 1995

By Jessica Howard
Twenty years after their
triumphant Riddell District
Football League victory,
Darley Football Club will
reunite to celebrate their
stunning success.
The 1995 team, which consisted of five sets of brothers (Dave and Matt Barnes,
Darren and Brendan Hehir,
Rod and Shayne Ward,
Heath and Clark Whelan,
and brothers-in-law Lex and
Danny Miller), overcame a
star studded Melton line up
that had entered the finals
series undefeated.
Under the coaching of
Craig Baker and captaincy
of David Barnes, the team
played in the Riddell District
Football League against the
likes of Sunbury, Melton,
Gisborne, Craigieburn and
Melton South.
With a score of 13.8 (87) to
11.11 (77), the 1995 premiership still stands as the clubs
last senior triumph.
The 1995 club president,
Peter Leonard, and current
president, Grant Wright
(who also played in the 1995
flag), have invited all players, supporters, officials and
volunteers to participate in a
Darley Devils weekend-long
celebration.
Mr Wright, who was the
youngest player on the field
at the time, said he remem-

Craig Baker and Grant Wright hold the Premiership flag from 1995 whilst Peter Leonard shows off the winning cup from 20 years ago. Photo Helen Tatchell
bered the flag-winning
game fondly.
Our club has compiled a
fantastic win-loss percentage over the last two decades, and have won 19 senior
premierships in our history,
but we have not saluted at
the final hurdle since 1995,

he said.
Being beaten after the siren in 2008 was incredibly
painful for us, but this year
we believe that we can give it
a good shake. It will be fantastic for our young players
of today to see that premierships are never forgotten

and how it can form lifelong

bonds and friendships.
Peter Leonard said the club
was calling on anyone who
remembered the golden year
to be part of the celebration.
1995 meant a lot to the
club, it was the culmination

of so much work by so many

people, he said.
The formal 20-year recognition luncheon will be held
from midday on Saturday,
August 1 at Darley Park,
with casual gatherings also
occurring at the Royal Hotel
on the eve of the luncheon

and a recovery brunch to

be held at 1995 premiership
coach, Craig Bakers house
on Sunday.

bookings, contact Reunion
Coordinator Shayne Ward

board for plaza

By Kate Taylor

Plans to redevelop Darley

Plaza are set to go before
council again.
Operators originally proposed the redevelopment at
last years November council
meeting however it requires
land adjoining the current site
to be re-zoned, and council
decided to ask the proponent
to separate the re-zoning application from the planning
permit application.
The matter returned before
the July council meeting with
the applicant stating that both
applications must be heard
together.
The proponent has indicated
that they will not proceed
with the redevelopment of the
site while there is some uncertainty on whether a separate
planning permit may be approved, read a report prepared by council officers.
The report recommended
that the application be approved, citing the benefits
of extending the shopping
centre.
The proposal is for the currently vacant 8 Jonathan Drive
to be re-zoned from residential to commercial and the existing shopping centre at 151
Gisborne Road to be extended.
A 22-space carpark and
crossover would be built on
the Jonathan Drive site, as
well as expanding the centre

by 467sqm in floor area which

would include an extension
to the existing supermarket
of 301.59sqm in area, an additional retail tenancy of
110.98sqm and expansion of
the common arcade area.
Woodlands Ward Councillor Pat Toohey questioned
the proponent at the meeting
about the provision of disabled car parking spaces, asking if two spaces out of the 96
potentially available spaces
will be enough.
We have an aged population. It might meet the standards, but we dont want our
aged community struggling
to find a car park. Can we ask
for four to six?
While a speaker on behalf of
the proponent had told the
meeting that the requirement
would be met, a council officer
told the meeting that there is
no legislated requirement, but
the general rule of thumb is
one to two per cent of available spaces being for disabled
parking.
CEO Rob Croxford pointed
out that the plans also show
two pram dedicated spaces.
The required amendments
to the Moorabool Planning
Scheme for the re-zoning and
permit application are now
being prepared by council
and will be brought before a
future council meeting before being put out for public
exhibition.

Benefits of fungi

By Alison Pouliot
Fungi may hold the secret to healthy
farms and forests. While many people
think of fungi as tasty mushrooms to
enjoy for dinner, fungi are also vital
in maintaining soil health. Although
little known, their clandestine
subterranean activities purify water,
recycle nutrients and support plants.
The secret is whats known as fungal
mycelia. These are the underground
thread-like part of a fungus that look
a little like spider-webs or cotton wool.
BDBEA.pdf
Mycelia create expansive scaffolds,

binding and aerating soils. They also

secrete chemicals that break down
large organic molecules into simpler
forms, building soils, and governing
nutrient flows.
Agricultural soil is often abundant in
nutrients. However, crops cant always
access them without the help of fungi.
Fungi form partnerships with plants,
extending their root systems and
allowing more efficient absorption of
soil nutrients and fertiliser inputs. One
obvious advantage to the farmer is the
significant saving in fertiliser costs.
1
29/05/2015
2:48 pm
Fungi
also
make crops more drought-

tolerant and protect them from soil

pathogens. Farmers can enhance crop
root growth, nutrition and yield by
encouraging fungi in their soils.
The forests and woodlands of Central
Victoria are also well-known for
hosting a great diversity of fungi. An
autumn stroll can reveal an amazing
diversity of fungi in a variety of colours
and forms. If youre interested in
knowing more about this fascinating
kingdom of organisms, you may like

Lodge services
granted
By Kate Taylor

Ballan Mens Shed member Stan Bell presented Kate Diamond-Keith (MSC) with a hand made rocking horse for her young
son at the official opening of the new facility, watched by (L-R) Geoff Howard, Paul Tatchell and Simon Ramsay.

Shed unites community

Photo - Helen Tatchell

By Jessica Howard
Grab your toolbox and head
on down to Ballan because
the Mens Shed is officially
open.
Moorabool Mayor Paul
Tatchell, Councillor John
Spain, Labor Member for
Buninyong Geoff Howard
and Liberal Member for
Western Victoria Simon
Ramsay were among a
crowd of community wellwishers
who
gathered
outside the shed to give a
rousing show of support for
the official ribbon cutting
ceremony.
The Mens Shed is a community-based organisation
that gives men and women
the opportunity to share
tools and skills whilst socialising in a safe, friendly and

healing environment.
Moorabool Shire Council
handed over the keys to the
Ballan group in July 2014,
alongside a major contribution of $64,000.
A total of $25,000 was also
donated by the then Liberal
State Government, and a
$9840 in-kind contribution
from the community.
The project resulted in the
construction of the new multipurpose colour bond shed,
situated behind the Ballan
Senior Citizens Centre in
Steiglitz Street.
Mens Group President
Kevin Healey said due to
the increasing progress of
the old shed, the group was
running out of space to do
things.
We are now able to put in
new facilities, which include

a greater range of machines.

By expanding the building
we are able to expand the
range of activities here, we
can move beyond just wood
work and incorporate other
things such as metal work.
Mr Healey said despite the
enjoyment of the hands-on
work, the group was primarily about boosting the
psychological wellbeing of
its 45 members.
A number of the guys are
living in physically isolated
places where its not easy
to see or interact with other
people, and a third of the
members live on their own
without a partner or family,
he said.
At the shed they are able
to just come down, do some
work or poke around and
just have a bit of a yarn. It

also affords us with the opportunity to do some good

for our local community
by helping out individuals
or groups by fixing something up or making things
for their use. We have done
a few things for the local
council, such as creating the
large sized scrabble pieces
used for the literacy trail.
Coming up to its eleventh
year as a group, the Ballans Mens Shed gather
each Wednesday from 9am
and is open to the public on
Thursdays.
Moorabool Mayor, Cr Paul
Tatchell said it wasnt just
about building a shed, but
also building relationships.
Thirty years ago, men
retired to their backyard
sheds, now they come to a
shed that is a community.

Aged care services in Bacchus Marsh will be boosted

by specialist equipment and
training at Grant Lodge.
The Djerriwarrh Health Services aged residential care
facility will share in nearly
$6 million across Victoria
under a state government
program designed specifically to improve services at
public sector residential
aged care.
Acting Chief Executive at
Djerriwarrh Health Services,
David Grace, welcomed the
news that Grant Lodge will
receive assistance with specialist equipment and training of nursing staff.
Many of the residents of
Grant Lodge have special
needs that require specialist
equipment to manage well,
Mr Grace explained.
Some of the specialist
equipment used in Grant
Lodge includes electronic
beds, lifting equipment,
pressure-relieving mattresses, etc.
Staff training is also vital.
Over time we are seeing
the needs of our residents

change. Dementia is a significant issue for many of

our residents and we aim
to ensure that our staff have
the most current training in
helping residents with dementia and other aged care
issues.
Grant Lodge has an excellent reputation in the community in relation to the
quality of care provided.
Nursing and other health
professional training programs are an important part
of ensuring that the Health
Service continues to provide
a high standard of care into
the future.
Grant Lodge provides 24
hour quality high level nursing care to its residents in a
home-like environment.
It has 30 beds, one of which
is a respite bed available for
the frail aged within the
community to use on a temporary basis to provide a
break for their carers.
Staffed by fully qualified
nurses,
physiotherapists
and diversional therapists,
the facility also has access
to doctors and other health
professionals on a needs
basis.

Yards still on
the cards

By Kate Taylor

Moorabool Shire Council is

not lobbying for Ballarats
saleyards to be relocated
within the shire but it is
interested.
A panel hearing into moving the city site to Miners
Rest concluded last week
and recently, Moorabools
Mayor Paul Tatchell met
with the No Saleyards for
Miners Rest group.
The group is currently lobbying surrounding shires
that may be interested in
having the saleyards moved
to their municipalities.
However, Council CEO Rob

Croxford remained tightlipped about having the saleyards moved to Moorabool,

awaiting the completion of
the current process that will
see a recommendation provided by the panel before
it is considered by Ballarat
Council.
We wait with interest on
the panels outcome regarding the proposition to relocate the Central Victorian
Livestock Exchange to Miners Rest and the City of Ballarats consideration of the
panels recommendations,
before further consideration on saleyard issues, Mr
Croxford said.

Update your home

dcor this winter

If you plan to update your home dcor this

winter, you dont need to spend a fortune.
Thats the advice from Rachael Dumic, the
owner of Meltons Home Dcor and More.
You should work on spending a little more
on a few key feature pieces in each room and
then use smaller, cost effective items to tie it
all in, she said.
For a lounge room you could have a canvas
as your higher priced item and then tie in
with matching colour cushions or candles.
Rachaels passion for design sparked from
her teenage years, where she held a parttime position in a homewear store. However
even from a young age she knew she wanted
run her own business, and with the support
of her parents had her own place up and
running by the age of 21.
Eight years later, she joins her younger sister

Natasha, twin sister Kylie, mother Rita and

father Ivan in a family operated business
committed to providing quality homewares,
furniture and indoor and outdoor dcor at
affordable prices.
With a 550-square-metre warehouse open to
the public and a shop situated in Woodgrove
Shopping Centre, Melton, Home Dcor and
More stocks everything from low-line TV
units and hallway tables to small and large
statues, terracotta pots and water features.
Rachael said the family works together to
import a wide range of products, and by
cutting out the middleman are able to pass
the savings on to their customers.
Our customers travel from Ballarat,
Horsham and Ocean Grove because of our
great range and low prices, Rachael said.
We are customer-orientated and aim to
build ongoing relationships with them.

Bridge funding
fills a gap
By Kate Taylor
Recent Federal Government
funding for a Bacchus Marsh
bridge has saved local ratepayers more than $2 million.

Moorabool Shire Council

Mayor Paul Tatchell explained that the Federal
Government contribution of
$2.177 million, towards the
total project cost of $4.3 million, saves council borrowing that money and paying
it back with interest.

It also saves council waiting

for developer contributions
to make up the funding
shortfall.

final in Newcastle, NSW. Photo - submitted

Skater boy!

By Jessica Howard
From Bacchus Marsh to
Newcastle - Connor SidariAlley has represented his
state in the Atoms National
Ice Hockey Tournament.
The young Moorabool local
was selected in the Victorian
under-11 squad, who he is
travelling with to Newcastle
in order to verse representative teams from Queensland,
ACT and New South Wales.
Held at the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium over two days
from July 3, Connor helped
his team travel through the
tournament
undefeated,
with eight wins, one draw
and a clear 2-0 victory in the
grand final.
The grade-six Bacchus
Marsh Primary School student said he felt very proud
of himself to have represent-

ed Victoria for the first time.

I feel really happy, my
family feels proud and it felt
really exciting. My team felt
excited for us to all represent
Victoria.
Connor said whilst he enjoyed playing in defence, he
also liked shooting from the
point when necessary.
And I also enjoy playing as
a team because I like being
with the other players, he
said.
Connors love for the sport
sparked from his familys
involvement with the Melbourne Mustangs, an ice
hockey team in the Australian Ice Hockey League.
His father, Steve Alley said
five hours a week was spent
on the ice, comprising of
training, games and general
skating.

divisions, the Atoms Under11s and the PeeWees Under13s. He practises at home
two or more hours a week
working on his stick and
puck skills in the garage
on artificial ice and he also
plays Inline Hockey for fun
at Sunshine every Tuesday
night in the Youth League,
he said.
Connor played football
with Darley as well as Inline
and Ice Hockey up until this
year when he stopped playing football to concentrate
solely on his hockey.
Connor, who has previously competed at the 2014
Inline Hockey Australian
Championships and the 2015
Mcrae Williamson Jamboree
in Adelaide, said he hoped
he could one day represent Australia in the World
Championships.

It completes a lot of work

for the Halletts Way project,
we always had an obligation
to build this bridge and it
would have had to be funded through developer contributions or the ratepayer,
Mayor Tatchell said.

He explained that Councils

General Manager of Infrastructure Phil Jeffrey put
together a fantastic funding application which was
helped by Senator Bridget
McKenzie meaning that
council did not have to wait
for developer contributions
which have been slow.
Sales are always slow when
you dont have a road network. One is relying on the
other so what this has done
is managed to keep it moving forward and hopefully
that will sort out the sales so
we get the contributions.
Mr Jeffrey explained that
development contributions
are often collected when
parcels of land are rezoned.
They are a means of addressing external impacts
and demands a development
will have on a community by
contributing to infrastruc-

ture works, he said.

In terms of the Halletts

Way/OLeary Way southern extension, development
contributions were agreed
as part of West Maddingley
estate rezoning, as part of
the agreement, Council will
receive contributions to that
project at certain triggers.
No funds have been received to date but it is anticipated that this will be received in the coming years.

Council is currently considering to fund the road and

bridge in next financial year
itself and recoup some of the
costs in future years via the
contributions, therefore in
terms of the bridge funding recently announced,
it means that there will be
less reliance on up-front
borrowings to construct the
project.

Court in action

the housing development. Photo Helen Tatchell

However you need to take

note that the court has no
tolerance to this sort of behaviour, and next time the
consequences will without a
doubt be a lot worse.
Sullivan received a $500
fine.
Meanwhile, Lily Hyes of
Ballarat pleaded guilty to
one charge of exceeding the
speed limit and one charge
of driving whilst suspended.
On May 24 of this year at approximately 2:30pm, the accused was observed travelling west along the Western
Freeway near Myrniong at
an alleged speed of 122km/
hr in a 110-zone.
Police intercepted the accused, who produced a Victorian driver license that had
been suspended for a period
of six-months due to loss of
demerit points.
The 23-year-old Ballarat
resident told police she had
made an unwise decision to
take her friend home after
being under pressure to get
him to a train.
She was fined $500.

Sewing new family

history seeds

By Jessica Howard
Theres a bit of family blood
in the Stamford Hill housing
development.
Located at the southern
end of Hallets Way, BelleVue
Tops is a 17-hectare urban
space consisting of 241 house
blocks and six generations of
combined family history.
Bacchus Marsh resident
and co-owner of Rustel Civil
Construction Ian Gillespie
will work alongside his
father Graham and uncle
Colin on the land which over
40-years ago was home to his
great uncles basalt quarry.
Peter Gillespie owned the
Stamford Hill quarry, still
evident just a few hundred
metres from the housing development, until 1972.
Working alongside the
Gillespie family is long-term

Bacchus Marsh resident

Danny Shea, whose family ties to the land date back
over 60-years ago.
Mr Shea said his grandfather originally owned the
land before it was passed
down the family tree to his
uncle and aunt, Kevin and
Trudy Shea.
The whole family worked
on the land from time to
time, I remember helping
out back in 1967 when I was
just 11-years-old, he said.
Up until the drought came
through, the whole family would always be helping
out, especially after school.
We would go up and help
with the milking of the cows,
growing oats and crops,
bringing in the hay and a lot
of rabbiting was done down
in the gully.

Mr Shea said despite the

land no longer belonging to
his family, it was interesting
to see the family connections
still there.
When my family sold up
they kept their house on a
one-acre block for a while,
but that was eventually
sold to a property investor
and then Hugh McMaster
bought it about 15 years ago,
and now here we are.
BelleVue Tops land owner
and Sydney resident, Hugh
McMaster said it was important to include the local community as much as possible.
The tradition carries on

Marsh Magistrates Court
last Friday.
Whilst one application for
the removal of an alcohol
interlock was successful,
four license eligibility applications were also granted,
two of which came with a
compulsory alcohol interlock for a period of six and
12-months.
A Bacchus Marsh resident
received a $250 fine and will
be required to write a letter
of apology after throwing
rubbish outside of his vehicle and hitting a cyclist,
and a 34-year-old pleaded
not guilty to using a mobile
phone whilst driving.
The Moorabool local stated
he had absolutely no reason
to be seen with a mobile
phone, as he had a hands
free kit installed in his car
that allowed him to dial
numbers through voice recognition. A contest hearing
was booked for August 7.
A 20-year-old Bacchus

Marsh resident was found

guilty of careless driving
after he was observed fishtailing around a roundabout, and driving fast,
revving hard and wobbling along Holts Lane,
Bacchus Marsh in 2014.
Ashford Sullivan, a probationary-license driver, told
police he had left his Bacchus Marsh home on the day
of the offence after arguing
with his girlfriend, and was
unaware of his dangerous
driving due to being upset,
the court heard.
Sullivans solicitor stated
that her clients behaviour
was out of character, and
asked the Magistrate not to
alter the state of his license
as he relied on it to get to
work.
Magistrate Catherine Lamble said that having no
priors indicated that the accused was normally a very
responsible person.
The consequences of taking your license, which
would result in a loss of
employment, is unjustified,
she said.

A combination of Fiskville
staff relocation and redevelopment works will see
community space become
hard to come by in coming
months.
Moorabool Shire Council CEO Rob Croxford
explained that the CFA
currently occupies approximately 550sqm of the previously vacant northern wing
of the Council Darley office.
The accommodation of
the CFA was action taken
by council to retain at least
20 jobs in the shire that otherwise may have been lost
as a result of the State Governments sudden decision
to close the CFAs Fiskville
facility, Mr Croxford said.
The preference of the CFA
staff was to remain as close
as possible to their homes
while their future was
decided.
He explained that the CFA
invested in a clean-up and
fit out of the space as well as

undertaken building code

compliance measures, in
lieu of lease payments while
lease arrangements and documentations were prepared.
A lease based on commercial rates will go to the
August council meeting for
approval. The term is likely
to be three by six month options whilst a new training
facility is constructed in the
Ballan district by the CFA.
Where practical, the CFA
is prepared to share spaces
with community groups.
However, the upcoming
construction of two major
projects - the Darley Hub
sports pavilion and the
Darley Early Years Hub will temporarily reduce the
availability of space during
the construction phase.
We anticipate the spaces
enhanced by the CFAs current tenancy will be available for community groups
to express their interest in up
to 18 months time or sooner.
The General Manager of
community services and his

team will continue to work

with community groups to
identify alternative solutions
to meet their needs.
One of those groups is the
local CWA, with President
Evonne Spargo having addressed the July council
meeting with a placard
- asking for a space for the
group.
We need a home. Well be
dead before we get a place,
she told the meeting.
Ms Spargo was told by a
council officer at the meeting it is a matter of waiting
to resolve the CFA lease arrangements before finding a
home for the group which
has 27 members, and a new
night group already with 15
members.
We raise a bit of money
for the community. We need
something where we can
sew and cook and do all
that, Ms Spargo explained.
People might come a bit
more if we had a little room,
it would be great.

School celebrates
educating milestone

By Jessica Howard
St Bernards Primary School
is set to celebrate 125 years
of educating Moorabools
youth.
Located in Bacchus Marsh,
the Sisters of St. Joseph took
over the management of the
catholic school in 1890, before relocating it from Fisken
Street to Gisborne Road.
Principal, Emilio Scalzo
said it was important for the
students to understand how
significant 125 years really
was.
With children aged from
just six to 12, its hard for
them to imagine what 125
years actually means. They
have no concept of that sort
of time, and I think its im-

portant for them to understand what a huge feat it is,

he said.
A commemorative procession, lead by a Cobb and Co
coach, will be held on Friday
(July 31), and will see students and teachers dressed
in period costume walk from
the schools original site,
along Lerderderg Street and
back to the current school
grounds. The students will
then join together to sing
God save the Queen.
Mr Scalzo said teachers had
been counting down the
days to the celebration, in
the hope of providing students with a concrete way of
understanding the history of
their school.

The teachers will be playing a number of old school

games with them and by
encouraging everyone to
dress up in old costume the
students will be able to really get into the spirit of the
event, he said.
A major celebration will
also be held on Friday, August 7, which will include a
Mass celebrated by Bishop
Vincent Long and Father
Brian Glasheen, followed by
a formal morning tea in the
Assembly Hall.
Commemorative memorabilia is available to purchase
through the school office.
For more information, contact St Bernards Parish Primary School on 5367 2379.

for the construction of the

toilet block.
The proposed facility includes two female, two male
and one disabled toilet
that includes baby change
facilities.
Some preliminary work
has already been completed,
with the water main along
the Avenue of Honour extended to provide water to
the toilet facility once its
built.
Councils General Manager
of Infrastructure Phil Jeffrey

said the design phase of the

project would take about
four weeks.
Following finalisation of
design and permits, construction is scheduled to
start mid August, with an
eight week construction
timeframe so we expect
the facility to be operational
in late October this year, all
going well. This will be good
timing for all the people who
use this area coming into the
warmer months, Mr Jeffrey
said.

Cooking is a reality

Photo - submitted

By Jessica Howard

My Kitchen Rules contestants and Bacchus Marsh

mother and son duo, Rose
and Josh Tejedor have
brought their cooking skills
to the test during a visit to
Darley Primary School.
The two celebrity chefs
dropped in to cook up a
storm with grade five and
six students involved in the
senior school master chef
elective group last term.
Uruguay-born
mother,
Rose brought some home-

style cooking to the table as

the ex-contestants helped
students whip up a batch of
beef and chorizo flavoured
empanadas.
Together they measured,
mixed and moulded the
right ingredients together
until the waft of garlic could
be smelt throughout the
whole school.
Darley Primary School
Principal, Simon Cornock
said the students anxiously
waited for their to creations
to cook.

When they finally came

out of the oven they tucked
into them with obvious enjoyment. Thankfully there
were enough empanadas left
over for staff to sample, he
said.
Everyone agreed that the
My Kitchen Rules/ Darley
Master Chef Team was a talented one.
The students enjoyed their
tasty treats and peppered
Rose and Josh with inquiries
about the lifestyle program,
cooking and everything
food-related.

Most people use a 4WD

to get off the beaten track,
but a local man has used a
motorbike!
Mark Grove from Bacchus
Marsh has just finished competing in the Finke Desert
Race, some 452 kms through
the red centre of the Northern Terriority.
Australias biggest desert
race celebated its 40th anniversary as Mr Grove
rode 226kms from Aputula
(Finke) a remote Indigenous
community before camping
the night at Alice Springs,
then turning around to ride
the 226kms back to Finke.
The two day race is held every year, with over 600 competitors on bikes and quads
or in buggies and cars. It is
one of the biggest sporting
events in the Northern Territory, and has the reputation
of being one of the most difficult off-road courses in one
of the most remote places in

the world.
I made it down to Finke in
23rd position outright and
2nd in my class. Racing back
to Alice on day two, I wasnt
really thinking of a top 20
finish, I just wanted to make
it back in one piece, Mr
Grove said.
At one point the dust was
so thick I couldnt see six feet
in front of me. I had a decent
crash on day one, landed on
my head and lost my go-pro
off my helmet. I was devastated that I couldnt take the
footage home to my kids.
Mr Grove, who has been
racing motorbikes for 18
years, came first by just under 35 minutes against 45
competitors in his 250cc four
stroke class.
Crossing the finish line I
knew I had won my class,
but when I was told that Id
finished 20th outright, I was
so happy, as there havent
been too many 250cc bikes
that have finished in the top
20.

Mr Grove was overwhelmed by the amount of

people who attend the race
and the atmosphere associated with the event. He
also said that doing 140kph
through the desert is kinda
cool.

Scams on
the rise
Fake bills, sham refunds
and bogus lottery prizes are
among the top five scams
targeting Victorians, the
states consumer watchdog
has revealed.
Minister for Consumer Affairs Jane Garrett said money transfer scams topped the
list with more than 400 complaints to Consumer Affairs
Victoria in 2014-15.
This new nasty trend includes the refund scam that
often involves a con artist offering large sums of money

in exchange for an upfront

payment.
In 2014-15, Consumer Affairs Victoria received more
than 1250 reports of scams.
As of mid June, the top five
were:
1. Money Transfer Scams
2. False Billing Scams / Unauthorised Advertising
3. Investment & Financial
Scams
4.
Phishing / Smishing /
Vishing
5. Bogus Lotteries or Prizes
The latest figures from the

Australian
Competition
and Consumer Commission
(ACCC) show Victorians lost
$20,411,511 to scammers in
2014.
Consumer Affairs Victoria
said people should always
be wary of unsolicited
emails, phone calls or letters
saying they have unclaimed
funds, won prizes or are
owed money.

Pattons Prayer
with Pastor Merv Patton

Rage, the inner

torment

TOM

Too many people have a

lifetime to regret a moment
of rage. When the anger meter hits extreme, nice people
can do terrible things. Many
people have died from a
single punch, threats of violence or death which result
in jail time, pulling a knife,
or running someone off the
road.
This kind of rage does not
just happen, but has been
building pressure inside
someone for many years.
Growing up with alcohol or
substance addicted parents,
being sexually, verbally or
emotionally abused can
leave a person with pent up
anger. School teachers often
face students who are ready
to explode at any time.
The Australian Psychological Society defines Anger
as an emotion that can
range from mild annoyance
to intense rage. When you
get angry, your heart rate
and blood pressure rise and
stress hormones are released.

This can cause you to shake,

become hot and sweaty and
feel out of control.
When you carry this anger
inside you for years, it takes
its toll on relationships, your
own mental health, your
work life etc. You cannot
experience peace, because
of the thoughts swirling in
your head. I believe that the
inner voice is mostly a cry
for justice.
Sadly, sometimes this will
not happen in this lifetime.
The person may be dead already, or have dementia, or
are being protected by other
family members. What can
you do to reduce this emotionally crippling disease?
1. Bring it out of the shadows
into the light. You cannot
deal with this alone. Talk
to a professional counsellor, a Pastor or Priest.
2.
With professional help,
face the reality of what
really happened in your
past. Dr Phil says You

cant change what you

dont acknowledge.
3. Work through the issues
and pain until you are
able to forgive whoever
hurt you. This is not to
let an evil person off the
hook, but to set yourself
free. Holding a grudge is
letting someone live rent
free in your head. Anon.
4. You didnt get this messed
up overnight and you
probably wont get healed
instantly. You will be surprised how your mind
will start to free up, and
the pressure and anger
will begin to subside.
Its not worth carrying rage
all through your life, and the
consequences of striking out
can be deadly to yourself
and others. The Bible tells
us that God is waiting to
forgive us for our lifetime of
mess-ups. He will help you
process past hurts and create
a new future.

Eagle makes
his mark
By Jessica Howard
Gordon football defender
Mark Gunnel has pulled
on the big V in a successful game against the Victorian Amateur Football
Association.
Gunnell, 24, was the only
Central Highlands Football
League player to be selected
in the Worksafe AFL Victoria Country (No.2) team,
which travelled to Bendigo
on Saturday (July 11) to verse
representatives from the
VAFA Division 4 side.
The match saw the Victorian squad, which consisted
of players from 18 different
leagues shrug off the opposition in a 29-point win at
Bendigos Queen Elizabeth
Oval.
Team coach, John Cossar
and his team of selectors finalised the squad ahead of
the Saturday clash, choosing
22 players out of a total of 47.
Gunnell said that as the first
time representing the team,
he couldnt believe he had
been chosen.
I was very surprised when
I got the call to tell me that
Id made the squad let alone
making the team, he said.
I wasnt sure how Id go,
but when I was named in the
22 I was very happy.
A Gordon Football Club
player for a period of ten
years, Gunnell said he enjoyed playing such a high

standard of footy, and being

able to meet a new bunch
of blokes from all over
Victoria.
And I was happy that we
had a win, it made the experience that little bit better.

with Tom Kingston

Denial psychological process by which painful truths are not admitted

into an individuals consciousness
Some time ago, a scientist
went on his annual tour of
the Russian Arctic Ocean,
checking for noxious plumes
of methane gas bubbling up
from the ocean. Hed previously seen hundreds of these
plumes, about a metre wide
each, emitting gas 50 times
more damaging to our climate than carbon dioxide.
This time, as he came across
the first plume, he couldnt
believe it. It was a KILOMETRE wide. A vast column
of gas entering our atmosphere. He sailed on and
found another a kilometre
wide, and another, and another: hundreds of them.
I have spoken on denial
before when talking of our
cultures attitude to the environment we need so much
but choose to ignore. For this
discussion on denial I am indebted to Chris Martensons

Life Beyond The Tipping

Point. As I have stated before, when confronted with
huge belief challenging
material, the common progression of emotions tends
to follow the Kubler-Ross
model for the end-of-life
grief. Denial gives way to
anger which is followed by
bargaining, then depression and finally acceptance.
However, its safe to say
that denial is the longest
lasting and most durable of
the stages, and thats pretty
much where we are collectively right now.
Chris writes, when we are
in denial about the enormous
gap between our current lifestyles and the acidification
of all the worlds oceans, or
the eventual demise of fossil
fuel energy despite having
no serious or credible plan
for that moment, then denial

is a quite harmful practice.

This denial has now entered
every part of our culture. In
a sense it is a pandemic.
Chris Martenson provides
some examples of this denial in the financial world in
which we live. Chris writes
of a couple of U.S. cities but
you might like to think of our
Australian cities are they
so different? Chris states,
Chicago has amassed debt
and underfunded liabilities
totaling $63 billion, or more
than $61,000 per household.
Chris goes into some detail
about the numbers involved
but it is his conclusion that is
frightening when he states,
heres the brutal maths: the
current city deficit is 675%
of current tax receipts. How
exactly does Chicago plan to
scrape another $61,000 out of
each household on top of the
existing tax bills? It doesnt.

It has no plan. The plan is to

simply remain in denial and
ignore everything until it all
breaks down.
Chris goes on, Or perhaps
we could note that of the six
mayoral candidates seeking election to run the city
of Philadelphia not one has
even talked about its massive $5.7 billion pension
shortfall during the campaign, even as they promise
expanded pre-kindergarten
programs and tax cuts. Not
one. Do you think that any
of them has an actual plan
to address that budget gaps
dream-crushing burden?
As Chris says, the most
rapid and profound loss of
species in the last 65 million
years due to human activity
is a really profound thing to
attempt to overlook. So are
the massively underfunded

pensions, and the fact that

money printing has never
(in all of history) led to sustained prosperity, only temporary bursts of feel-good
spending that all ended
somewhat miserably for the
people involved.
So what should we do? Well
according to Chris, the cure
for all that seems to ail us
humans is both simple and
hard. All we need to do is
shift our narrative. If we
did that, in a ridiculously
short amount of time we
could be doing things very
differently.
Instead of a trillion dollars
each year going to warfare
and security in service to
an increasingly paranoid
deep state, that same money
could flow into soil building,
species nurturing, alternative energy installation,

and other life affirming

activities.
The only thing preventing us from having very
different priorities are the
stories we have running in
our heads and across our
culture.
I, for one, do not think it is
a coincidence that our Australian political leaders are
talking up national security at this time. They and
their financial supporters
are dead set on continuing
the old story right up to the
end. We need to challenge,
in every, and any way, this
dead-end story.
What is your opinion?

Volunteers are
community backbone

By Jessica Howard
The Gordon Public Park
Recreation Reserve committee of management have
been recognised for their
outstanding
voluntary
contributions.
Sophie Benkemount, MaryTeresa Ritchie, Therese
Winter and Adam Frazer
were each presented with a
framed certificate during an
awards ceremony held at the
reserve clubrooms recently.
Presented by members of
the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), the awards
focused on the positive
contributions made to the
public park.
Gordon Public Park Recrea-

tion Reserve COM President,

Sophie Benkemount said
it was nice to be acknowledged for their work.
A lot of time goes into
maintaining a facility such
as this one, including liaising with other volunteer
groups and creating a master plan which we have just
done, she said.
The master plan outlines
the redevelopment of this
site which will include the
resurfacing of the tennis
court and a new skate park.
In conjunction with National Volunteer Week, members
of the Yendon Recreation
Reserve CoM also received
an award.
DELWP Grampians Re-

gional Director, Brendan

Roughhead said the department relied on the generosity and passion of the local
community to keep their
outdoor spaces safe, clean
and accessible.
Committee of Management volunteers are the unsung custodians of our great
outdoors, lending their hand
to help us manage Victorias
8 million hectare public land
estate, he said.
Im very proud of all of
our Committees of Management, and am pleased
to see so many recipients of
awards for long service and
outstanding contributions.
I extend my thanks to them
on behalf of the Department
and our local communities.

Emergency relief
receives a lifeline
By Jessica Howard
The Neighbours Place has
received the stamp of approval for an increase in
funding for the 2015-16 financial year.
The successful submission
to Moorabool Shire Councils draft budget will allow
for the not-for-profit organisation to continue providing
emergency food relief for
those in need.
The Neighbours Place coordinator Jackie Tabone said
the funding would allow for
the necessary expansion of
food supplies.
Its very hard to judge how
many people we will see
each week and while we rely
on donations, we are always
looking for more ways to ob-

tain supplies, she said.

By buying more food we
have more to offer to the
people.
The Neighbours Place has
assisted close to 500 adults
and children and eight
homeless people since January. However Mrs Tabone
said whilst the successful
increase in funding was a
positive step forward, a decline in volunteers over the
winter period was hard to
overcome.
We have about 30 odd volunteers here, however we always struggle over winter as
volunteers go away to avoid
the colder months, she said.
Winter can also bring in
more people due to higher
electricity bills, so volunteers are essential.

With no regular or guaranteed income, Mrs Tabone

said The Neighbours Place
relies solely on grants, donations of money and food,
and fundraising, including an event to be held at
the Bacchus Marsh Uniting
Church on August 29.
We have spent some time
collecting a number of items
that we will sell at a garage
sale at the Uniting Church,
with all proceeds going
directly back to The Neighbours Place.
Donations are welcome at
The Neighbours Place, 77
Main Street Bacchus Marsh
from 9.30am-3pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and
Fridays and until 12pm on
school holidays. For more information, contact 5367 6222.

Local community groups

had the opportunity to
showcase their activities and
share their ideas in a recent
Moorabool Partnerships networking event.

The meet and greet

program saw up to 60 local community members
gather together at the Ballan
Mechanics Institute Hall on
Saturday, June 27.
Co-organiser, Mary-Teresa
Ritchie said the aim of the
event was to establish a network of partnerships that
would benefit local communities and groups by
enabling them to collaborate
together.

We were really happy

with how the event played
out in the end; there was a
representative from so many
different groups and all the
reports we have heard back
have been very positive, she
said.
On the day we saw representatives from the Darley
Community Art Garden,
Bacchus Marsh U3A, Apple
FM, Gordon Public Park,
Gordon Public Hall, The
Laurels and the historical societies from Ballan and Bacchus Marsh just to name a
few.
Ms Ritchie said each group
was able to take away something different from the
event, which enabled it to be
a very successful day.

I know those from U3A

wanted to publicise, which
meant they were able to
walk away from the event
with really useful contacts
that could help them do that
like Apple FM for example, she said.
However I think for the

Progressives. Photo Helen Tatchell
majority it was a great way
to see who was out there
and who was doing similar
things. It worked really well
as a place to make contact.

Representatives from the

Bacchus Marsh Community
College [The Laurels] said
the event was a great way
of establishing partnerships
with similar organisations
in the shire.
President of the BMCC
Board of Directors, Ray
Newland said the college
had recently been made
aware of the vast number
of not-for-profit organisations existing in Australia
that were endeavouring to
receive funding from the
ever shrinking allocation of
government monies.
In response to this, BMCC
is looking to form partner-

ships aimed at increasing

efficiency in funding submissions and maximising

training outcomes for Registered Training Organisa-

community, he said.

Dear Editor,
Moorabool
commuters would not have been
surprised to hear that the
punctuality of trains on the
Ballarat line plummeted in
June, following the Andrews
Governments failed roll out
of the Regional Rail Link.
Given that the June figures
only include ten days of the
ongoing timetable debacle,
I dread to think what Julys
numbers will look like.
The performance of our V/
Line services is simply not
good enough and its about
time Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan came to
Moorabool and talked to
commuters about the chaos
they have experienced on
her watch.
Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Rural and Regional Transport, Simon Ramsay,
took a morning peak service
with commuters last Tuesday. Mr Ramsay contacted
Jacinta Allan and asked her
to join him. Unfortunately,
despite saying that she was
making Moorabool and
Ballarat a priority, she was
unavailable.
If Jacinta Allan continues

Dear Editor,
It looks like it will be almost
a year into this Melbourne
Labor Government before
we see any new major projects in rural and regional
Victoria.
Former Labor Premier, John
Brumby, has handed his
regional economic development and services review to
Regional Development and
Agriculture Minister Jaala
Pulford.
Not only was the review
two months late, its recommendations are being kept
secret until October almost
a year into this government.
Until then, the growth of
regional Victoria is on hold.
Regional Victorians have
every right to be very nervous about this review, given

that John Brumby was the

architect of the north-south
pipeline and desalination
plant disasters.
Already, the government
has allocated just 2.9 per cent
of the states major infrastructure projects to regional
Victoria.
I have called on the Melbourne Labor Government
to release the report recommendations
immediately.
Communities deserve to
know what is being considered for their future.
If the government has nothing to hide and regional Victorians have nothing to fear
in this report, why cant it be
released?

Leader of The Nationals

Dear Editor,
I write in answer to the
three people who wrote in

of debate degraded to personal attacks on me based
on emotional, knee-jerk reactions that lack evidence.
Firstly, I was criticised by

not related to wind farms.
It would have been wise for
the two letter writers to have
done a little research before
jumping to false conclusions.
A simple phone call or courtesy visit to either Mrs or Mr
Tatchell would have given
you the reasons why they
moved house. Their decision
had nothing to do with wind
farms.
The fear that wind turbines
cause health problems is
an on-going concern of Angela Kearns. I would suggest
again Angela that you do
some research on the topic.
There are many international and national research
reports published and no
medically or scientifically
based evidence has been
found to link illness and
wind turbines. For example:
Wind Turbine Health Impact

Health. The Science Show,
ABC Radio National has,
over the past few weeks,
had a series called Energy
Futures involving well-researched reports on all types
of renewable energies. It can

Top tips for successful sellers

Enzo Raimondo
CEO, REIV

Youve decided to sell, appointed an agent and your

first open house is coming
up. Your agent will be doing
all he or she can to get suitable buyers through your
front door but what they
find when they get there is
all-important in securing a
successful sale and the best
possible price.
Your role is crucial. Here are
five habits all successful sellers have in common.
Understand the buyers
perspective: You love your
home but potential buyers
dont have that emotional
connection. During viewings, theyre trying to imagine their future lifestyle

rather than live your life.

Personal touches are great
but can make it difficult for
buyers to see themselves
living there. Pack away personal items and put them in
storage, ready for your next
move. De-clutter your home
and let its advantages shine.
If your dcor is outdated,
perhaps enlist the help of a
stylist or friends who can
help stage your property for
sale.
Realistic price expectations:
Get quotes from a number of
agents, but do your own research online on what else is
for sale in your area. Putting
a very high price on your
home may scare buyers off
a realistic and market com-

petitive price could result in

a number of potential buyers
vying to purchase.
A pristine home for inspections: Everything needs to
gleam and never underestimate the impact of a fresh
coat of paint. The basic
checklist: clean kitchens and
bathrooms, clothing and
personal effects put away
neatly in drawers and wardrobes, swept floors, beds
made, tidy childrens rooms,
no unpleasant odours from
cooking, mould or cigarette
smoke. If you have outdoor
space, mow lawns and tidy
the garden. When in doubt,
get a friend to do a test
viewing for you and identify anything that stands out

to them as a concern.
Finish DIY, dont try to hide
problems: Dont think that
buyers will overlook dripping taps or lack of doorknobs. Even the smallest
problems will make buyers
mark down offers and may
lead them to suspect bigger
issues are lurking, sight unseen. If there are significant
problems such as rising
damp or cracking, strongly
consider carrying out remedial work before selling a
renovators delight can be
enticing for some buyers
but others may feel overwhelmed. The upshot is that
if your home is in need of
repair it is also unlikely to
attract a top price.

Ask for agent feedback:

How many people came
to an open for inspection?
What were their comments?
Have they identified any
stumbling blocks? If no one
is attending the inspections,
ask why. If no offers are
forthcoming, is your asking
price unrealistic? Accepting
feedback and addressing issues is essential.
Selling your home can be
an emotional experience but
your agent is there to guide
you and make it as straightforward as possible. Take
advantage of their knowledge and work with them
to achieve the result youre
looking for.

Why More RAM is better

When it comes to improving the performance of your

computer, increasing the amount of RAM is possibly the
most effective way of boosting speed and handling power.

What does RAM do?

AUTOMOTIVE

AUTOMOTIVE

Your computer uses Random Access Memory (RAM) to

hold program code and process instructions that you
give your software when computing. When you turn your
computer off, RAM loses the data that was used during
the computing session. When you restart your computer
the data from the operating system and the programs
you start is once again loaded into the computers RAM.
(Although modern RAM still retains small portions of data
as either dynamic DRAM or static SDRAM.)

Indoor Bowls

The indoor bowls finalists have been

decided for the Bacchus Marsh and Melton
district.
After a round robin pennant was played,
two teams from the strong Rowsley club
and two teams from Avenue, will play off
for the premiership. The four Rowsley teams
were skipped by state rep players Justin and
Joanne Webster, Mark Broadbent and Glen
Sergeant, who have already won the state
fours. Avenue teams featured the former
champion Doreen Connell and first time
finalist Lyn Robinson. There has been 28
players who have played pennant at Avenue
this year revitalising the competition with
Junior Jaryd Davies heading to Warrnambool
for the nationals.

Marsh
struggled all day to match Darley eventually losing by 89 points.
Phone: 5367 3388
The reserves played a great team game and had a magnificent
win coming from behind with the winning goal snapped out of a
pack by (Prozzo) with seconds to play great win boys. The U18.5s
totally outplayed their opponent all day and lead at every change
to eventually run out victors by 59 points.
The netball girls were also keen for some revenge and bragging
rights but unfortunately each of the teams lost to a better
opponent, except for the A Reserves who wore their opponent
down and ran out victors by 5 goals.
This Saturday Bacchus Marsh will welcome Sunbury to Maddingley
Park. Please ensure you all come down and give your support as
there are only 2 home games left.
The Bacchus Marsh Womens Football team travelled to Kyneton
on the weekend and displayed a dominant and polished brand of
football where they lead all day and eventually ran out victors by
80 points. The girls are now a game + percentage inside the 4 with
3 games remaining and for the first time are looking at making the
V.W.F.L. West Division finals. This Sunday (at home) they will take
on the ladder leader, Sunbury Lions so please get down and give
them your support.
