The final year project thesis should showcase the students attainment
level of the knowledge and skill gained throughout the duration of the
program. To this eect, the project is expected to encompass any one
of the following components. New software/product development;
innovative web development; advanced RTS (embedded projects), tool
development (or a module development); research oriented project
development along with suitable application of engineering standards.

OVERVIEW OF PROJECT DISSERTATION PROCESS

The Project Work must involve the Design of new Model/Architecture, and
appropriate elements of the following:
New SoKware/Product development,
Innova2ve Web Development,
Advanced Real Time Applica2on Development,
Tool Development,
Research Oriented Project development along with
Applicable Engineering Standards

17/04/15

The project should fall into any one of the category of the above and
suitable justification should be oered by the student in case further
clarification is required.

The project evaluation in general contains three components namely

synopsis submission; mid-sem evaluation and final thesis evaluation.
The weightage distribution is as presented. The exact schedule of the
evaluation will be released shortly.

OVERVIEW OF PROJECT DISSERTATION PROCESS

Procedure for project submission

Synopsis Submission - project approval

Mid-Sem Evalua2on - project presenta2on of 15 mins

17/04/15

New software/product development: should showcase the idea and

the validity of the implementation in the current market space

Innovative web development - should include the industry standard

web development integration architecture and suitable standards
associated with it (e.g of the same include, the use of web services,
OSGi, etc)

Advanced RTS: would more likely be suitable for the embedded

design or students involved in hardware component of development

Tool Development - could include a module level integration of the

software to the existing software. An exploration of the open-source
software domains could oer meaningful insight into such possibilities.

Research oriented: includes the demonstration of domain knowledge

from the selected topic and in addition the implementation skill.

Engineering standards: are to be generally followed and those

discussed in your theory should be suce. Possible examples, include
the use of UML 2.0; Web services standards, etc.

FORMAT OF SYNOPSIS SUBMISSION

Synopsis submission should

be hard copy submission

Guide(s) will be allocated to

hand-hold the students
through the process

Abstract should contain

details on the project
implementa2on along with
suitable mo2va2on

17/04/15

The synopsis submission form contains the basic details. The title
once submitted in consultation with the guide will reviewed and
approved for further implementation. The student is encouraged to
stay in touch with the guide (recommendations are made to request
teaching faculties to extend the services of the guideship).

The mid-sem evaluation component include the mentioned

components.

MID-SEM EVALUATION COMPONENT

17/04/15

The final evaluation contains the mentioned component.

FINAL EVALUATION COMPONENT

17/04/15

The thesis should ideally contain the chapters as listed in the figure.
The chapters can be modified suitably depending on the type/nature
of the project. Consultation with your guide is highly recommended.

THESIS OUTLINE

17/04/15

Until now, the overall expectations of the thesis has been discussed.
Now, lets turn our attention to the contents each of the topic. What
should be included into these dierent chapters.

GUIDELINES ON THE CONTENT

THESIS TOC
INTRODUCTION

Start with the big idea

State the relevance of your work in the current technical plaYorm

Discuss the history of the technology

Categorise the technology into dierent components

List the dierent innova2ons that has resulted from the technology

Present a 2meline of breakthrough of technology

Summarise the contribu2on of the *thesis*

Introduce dierent chapters in the thesis

Use pictorial representa2ons to highlight the technology/applica2on

References are important.

Introduction is the fist chapter of your thesis. therefore, plays a

significant role in triggering the interest among the reader to go
through the thesis. Fundamentals steps of writing your thesis include;
start with the big idea. The big idea statements are needed to motivate
the work and thus forth provide a context in which the project is
implemented. The introduction chapter can also include a broad
category of dierent works that are made available in the market
place/literature study. Such classification would help the thesis to be
placed among the eminent work carried out by dierent members of
the community. A brief history and the origin of the technology or
problem will enhance the readability of the topic and provide a
meaningful analysis on the relevance of the thesis in comparison to the
existing tools/technologies/platforms. It would be be beneficial to
distinguish between the core technology and the applications
associated with the technology. The chapter should be concluded with
a brief high-level overview of the thesis contribution followed by the
overview of the thesis structure. Pictorial representations to explain the
problem statement and present the relevance of the proposed
technology with the relevant state-of-the art will be highly appreciated
(although not compulsory such eorts will increase the readability).
Suitable and relevant references should be provided and inserted into
the document using cross-reference option.

The picture represents an overview of the introduction of a topic to the

implementation.

THESIS TOC
LITERATURE REVIEW/BACKGROUND

Present the overview of the problem and state the relevance in the current context

Cri2cally analyse the results published by other members

Comment on the nal ndings published.

State the possible improvements

Compare your work with that of others.

The reader should be curious to understand your solu2on to the problems listed in
the literature.

The chapter allows the evaluator to find out if the candidates are reinventing the wheel. There are no new breakthrough concepts for
which the candidate can claim he/she cannot find any relevant
systems. Hence, attention should be paid to the amount of work that
has been reported and care must be taken into account to distinguish
the proposed system framework against the literature. The term
literature is relevant to the academic material published, however for
system development an overview of existing systems can also be
discussed. A comparison of the feature sets can also be presented to
suitably justify the uniqueness of the project implementation.

An overview of the literature review is presented to provide suitable

motivation for the candidates.

PROPOSED FRAMEWORK/
SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

The heart of the thesis

Use pictorial representa2ons

Clearly state how the disadvantages stated in the literature review are overcome
with the proposed model.

Present step-by-step detail of the algorithm

Describe each module in detail

Discuss the integra2on

Provide input on the data structures used (if any)

Use UML founda2ons to enhance the readability of the chapter

THESIS TOC
EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION/
TEST REPORT

Test case/experimental results are very important to the thesis.

With the introduc2on of Big-data and other supplementary technologies, a good

thesis should create a similar environment to evaluate the test results.

Use of standard *datasets* are preferable

Refer to publicly available benchmark datasets

Evaluate and benchmark your results against established algorithms and protocols

Graphic representa2ons are very good tool to represent numeric comparisons

Present a detailed analysis of the parameters used in the evalua2on.

In addi2on to quan2ta2ve evalua2on, perform subject user evalua2on (if required)

17/04/15

The proposed framework is at the heart of the thesis. The chapter

should provide a clear solution to the problem statement and justify
how the thesis implementation addresses the issues raised from the
literature study. The gap between the lack of solution in the literature
should be clearly bridged in this chapter. An easy to read structure
should be followed, containing the necessary pictorial representations
clearly highlighting the dierent components/modules/etc. If there are
any algorithms used in the implementation, the same should be
presented as pseudo-code. Suitable UML representations are to be
included as well.

16

The experimental evaluation chapter provides an outline of the data

used in the implementation. A detailed report and analysis of the data
should be provided that includes the source, the nature and the
complexity of the data generated. If heterogenous dataset is used, the
same should be described in detail. Students are encouraged to
consider any online benchmarking dataset to provide an
implementation of the same. The chapter should also include sucient
amount of graphical analysis on the processed output along with the
any other comparisons that could be made possible.

An examples of some of the algorithmic comparisons are provided

through pictorial representation.
