This course will enable you to understand the principles of subject access,
classification systems and other methods of organising information. You will be able
to use this knowledge to help you analyse a client's information need and provide

Module 1: Classification and Metadata

20 May, 10:27
Amanda Cossham
72270 Week 13

What do we mean by classification? We have to understand

classification ourselves if we are to explain it to others clearly, as you
will be doing in the first assignment.

Older topics ...

Introduction (or, how do you organise your shirts?) (p. 1-5)

The next section discusses how a classification scheme affects

subject access, and then shows what a classification scheme
actually looks like.
Classification in libraries (p. 6-21)
The future of library classification (p. 22-24)
Cutter tables

Classification provides a way of organising and accessing items both

physically and electronically - but it deals with entire items, not parts
of items. Now we will move on to look at some other ways of getting
access to the information in books and articles using indexes and
abstracts. This section includes Metadata.
