Weather, as well as, how to describe it.

Temperature
Basic Explanation

Temperature is defined as: "The degree of hotness or

coldness of a body or environment"
Temperature gives us a way to express our hotness or
coldness in terms of numbers instead of subjective terms
(cold or hot). Thus, temperature is commonly used in

the realm of weather.

How does temperature vary during

the day?
Why does the temperature vary?

Temperature has a minimum in the morning hours and has a

maximum in the early evening. This of course is based on
the amount of sun that a given area receives during the day.

During daytime hours the sun is shining and the

temperature increases. But after the sun sets the
temperature slowly starts to lower until the sun rises the
next day. The magnitude of the highest and lowest
temperature is based on the time of year. In the summer,

high temperatures occur and in the winter low

temperatures occur.

Dew point temperature is defined as:

"the temperature at which dew begins
to form."
Therefore, dew is formed due to the
temperature reaching dew point.

How it is Measured
It is simply the temperature when dew forms. So
weather stations have a device that captures air
and holds it in. It then decreases the
temperatures, consequently, dew forms on its
sensor mirror. When that happens it records the
temperature and that is the dew point
temperature.

What temperature is decreased?

A more common way to measure dew point is to

actually measure Relative Humidity (Rh) through
mathematical equations.

Some things to know about dew point:

The current dew point will never be higher then the current
temperature.
If the temperature is at the dew point and the temperature falls,
the dew point must follow.

Higher the dew point temperature more moisture that is in the air.
Example:
Death Valley(desert) California has low dew points, thus it feels
dry.
Key West Fl. has high dew points, thus it feels humid and sticky.

Thunderstorm

acoustic effect on
the
Earth's

as thunder.

Does lightening cause thunder?

Thunder occurs as a result of the acoustic

effect of lighting on the Earths atmosphere.

Four Main Types of Fog

Whats heavier, cold or warm air?

What is dense?
What happens when air rises?

How is it similar to a cold front?

How is it different?
What are some differences in the

steam or evaporation fog. When a cool air mass moves over a relatively

warm water body or land mass. So the warm

heat air from the water body meets that cold

air mass and causes the water to condense,

thus forming steam fog.

advection fog

So what you have is a warm moist air front

thats moving. It comes in contact with a cool
current of water. This cool current cools down
the air, and its possible that the contact point
cools down the air enough that it get to the
temperature at which it is gong to condense.

advection fog (cont.)

So because it isnt dependant on the time of

dayadvection fog can stick around for a very long
period of time. This is why places like London and
San Fsco. can get fogged in for extended periods of
time, due to the advection fog.

upslope fog
When a warm moist air mass gets pushed
up a mountain or hill as it gets pulled, the
air cools and condenses. Commonly found
at mountain peaks.

ASSIGNMENT
How does sunshine help clear
fog?
Clouds are water vapor. Water vapor is tiny droplets of
water floating around in the air. Water evaporates;
especially when exposed to heat.
Because water evaporates; especially when exposed to
heat, sun does help clear fog.

Tornado
a
violent
destructive whirling
wind accompanied
by a funnel-shaped
cloud
that
progresses in a
narrow path over
the land.
St. Louis Airport tornado

Tornadoes form in thunder clouds, where strong

updrafts of air come close to an unusually strong

downdraft.
This tends to happen during most violent storms; often
at cold fronts, where warm air is forced to rise quickly.
The strong updrafts leave a low pressure area in the
cloud. Air rushes into replace the updrafts and evens

out the pressure.

Because the updrafts are so strong, and the incoming

air is warmer air from below, updrafts gain even more

strength. As it streams in and up, this air twists the
already soaring air into a spinning spiral.

Examples:
A downburst is defined as a strong downdraft
with an outrush of damaging winds on or near
the ground. If the swath is less than 2.5 miles,
it is called a microburst. Microbursts are quickhitting events and are extremely dangerous to
aviation. Microbursts are sub-classified as dry
or wet microbursts, depending on how much
rain accompanies the microburst when it
reaches the ground.

Hurricane
a storm system

numerous
thunderstorms that

strong
winds and heavy
rain

Spiral bands of a hurricane are where the

action is. Embedded within these bands
is the heaviest rain, strongest winds,
continuous lightning and possible
tornados. Between the bands, the
conditions are less severe.

True or False
A hurricane does not represent very strong
continuous winds and heavy rain.

It is impossible for you to know when the

storm is definitely passed.
