VICE PRESIDENT LAUNCHES ROTARY CANCER RUN 2015


Kampala, 21st July, 2015. The Vice President, HE Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi,
today launched the 4th edition of the annual Rotary Cancer Run which will be held at
the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on Sunday 30th August 2015.
The Rotary Cancer Run, which began three years ago with the promise to build and
equip a Cancer treatment ward in Kampala, has grown to become one of the most
eagerly anticipated events for corporate sponsors and participants.
Speaking to the media at the launch this morning at the Kampala Sheraton Hotel,
Past District Governor (PDG) Stephen Mwanje, Chairman of the Uganda Rotary
Cancer Programme, expressed appreciation to all the sponsors who took a leap of
faith and supported ...this humbled initiative to save lives... he went on to say
...when we handed over the Rotary -Centenary Bank Cancer Center to Nsambya
Hospital two weeks ago, we demonstrated the integrity of Rotarians who mobilised,
organised and put every single shilling raised to its rightful use...
The proceeds from the Rotary Cancer Run 2015 will go towards the construction of a
blood bank at Mengo Hospital. The construction of what will be Ugandas second
blood bank is being spearheaded by PDG Emmanuel Katongole who stressed the
Urgency for Action Now to have a second blood bank in Uganda ...too often lives that
could be saved by a pint of blood, are lost because we do not have the blood or the
infrastructure to provide this most basic care...
The Chairman of the Rotary Cancer Run 2015 organising committee, Rotarian Fred
Masadde, paid special tribute to the Platinum sponsors for the Run, Centenary Bank
and Crown Beverages Limited (under their Pepsi brand) who have been partners
since the inception of the cancer initiative. He also listed other sponsors as: Mukwano
Group (Aqua Sipi); Events Warehouse; MAAD Advertising; the Vision Group; the

Monitor Group; NBS TV; NTV; CBS; Capital Radio; Super FM; Power FM; IPSOS;
Aids Information Centre; PACE, Uganda Cancer Institute and many others who are
still coming on board.
Mr Percy Lubega, Chief Manager Business Development & Marketing Centenary
Bank, said On behalf of Centenary Bank, Im proud to announce that we will once
again support this years Cancer Run with shs107m. We believe that a healthy
community and healthy consumers are a good foundation for business prosperity. To
date, we have contributed over shs800m in the project and have reached over 7,787
women countrywide through screening, seminars, literature, sensitization through
media and the cancer run, Percy Lubega said Centenary Banks contribution is part
of its main corporate social responsibility programme called; Bridging the Cancer
Gap initiative which is in line with its mission of improving the quality of life of
Ugandans.
Mr Simon Lugoloobi the CEO of Crown Beverages Limited said Today, Im delighted
to announce our contribution of shs150m for this years cancer run, with shs100m
going directly towards the platinum sponsorship and another shs50m going towards
media support and other related costs, Lugoloobi said.
We hope that this contribution, along with others from the many partnerships
created by the Rotary Family, will go a long way in reducing the blood shortage with
the construction of a fully-fledged blood bank at Mengo hospital, He added, Since
our partnership with Rotary three years ago, CBL has invested over shs300m towards
the cancer project. This is in addition to the support that has been given to other
worthy causes countrywide which all reinforces our status as a responsible citizen.
