CHAPTER IV: PLAN OF ACTION

A. Project Objectives
This research intends to answer the question Does parents intervention help in the
reading abilities of grade 3 pupils af Bascos Manambong Parte Elementary school. An action
research was performed with this main aim. Thirty eight (38) pupils in the Grade 3 class
participated in this action research project. This research only presents some practical solutions
proposed within the time available.
B. Target Subjects
Thirty eight (38) pupils in the Grade 3 class participated in this action research project.
This action research involved pupils in answering pre-test and post-test to test reading abilities in
both silent and oral.
They were grouped into two groups with nineteen (19) pupils in each group. Group A
consist of the pupils with parents tend to intervene with their child and school activities and
Group B are those whose parents do not.

C. Research Design
The study used group-pretest-posttest design and Grouping, which are generally
descriptive in nature. This design is the most applicable to note the progress of the pupils.
A pre-test was used to find out the current level of reading abilities of the pupils level of
the pupils in this research study. Using the book English for you and me, the pretest was
composed of 10 multiple choice question based from the story read. Based on the areas of
weakness through the use of pre-test, the posttest was constructed. The posttest was administered
after 4 weeks of meeting up with the parents and involving them in activities together with their
child.

E. Evaluation Criteria
The effectiveness of the action research undertaken was evaluated through a checklist
questionnaire. Other teacher handling English subjects were be used as respondents.
The respondents used a questionnaire check list (See Appendix 3) and placed a
checkmark () mark in the box before each item and place a checkmark headed by the
appropriate answer to assess the effectiveness of the intervention and Action research
undertaken.
After the survey results were collected and the researchers arranged, tabulated and
analyzed from the questionnaire frequency counts and percentages and ranking was used
The formula for percentage is as follows:
nf
P= N x 100%
15

Where:
p = percentage rate frequency rate
nf = number of frequency
N = total population of respondents
To further Identify the effectiveness of the Interventions used in this Action Research, the
Average Weighted Means (AWM) was utilized. The formula for AWM is shown below.

AWM =

f iXi
N

Where:

f = number of frequency

X = weight in each frequency

N = total number of respondents

The obtained AWM will be interpreted using the following scale:

CHAPTER V: PROJECT RESULTS

A. Narrative of the Implementation Process
16

A pre-test on multiplication was used to find out the understanding level of the pupils in
this research study. The pre-test has a total of 10 questions (Appendix 1). The test is reliable as it
gives a measure of the attainment of pupils skills in reading. Based on the areas of weakness
through the use of pre-test, there were customized remedial lessons instead of one-size-fit-all
instruction. A post-test (Appendix 2) is the similar like same test questions with pre-test. It was
given by the end of the intervention.

B. Presentation and Analysis of Results

The table above shows the pretest and posttest results for the pupils in Group A, It
can be noted that there is a 10.52% increase in the number of pupils who got above 5 in
the test, which could be attributed to the parents intervention with the pupils. Most of
these parents attended the weekly meeting and activities with their child.

C. Conclusions
Most of the parents in Group A attended all of the weekly meetings and admitted
to bre very involved in the activities of their child in school and in their studies including
homeworks and Homereading. Thus the results turnout that these pupils performed higher
reading abilities. Thus the researcher concludes that The parents intervention help in the
reading abilities of Grade t3 pupils of Bascos Manambong Parte Elementary School.
D. Recommendations for further Action and Study
As based from the aforementioned findings and conclusion, the following are hereby
recommended:
1. That a similar study be conducted in other grade levels.
2. That parents intervention should be recommended and practiced by parents to improve
the education of their children.
3. Similar studies be conducted in other school, to generate a generalization of wider
scope.

E. Reflection
I choose this topic because multiplication concepts are one of our curriculum
mandated goals. I took several strategies to help improve the reading abilities of my
pupils, and the literature on parents intervention in improving the education of students
18

got into my senses that lead me into an Action Research to improve the reading abilities
of my pupils.
It is a wonderful approach not only to imprve the reading abilities but also to
improve on the harmonious relationships between teacher and parents, loving
relationships between the parents and child and a balance community.
