Chapter Thirteen

ukadeva Gosvm said: The present Manu, who is named
rddhadeva, is the son of Vivasvn, the predominating
deity on the sun planet. rddhadeva (Vaivasvata Manu) is
the seventh Manu. Now please hear from me as I describe
his sons.
The Thirteenth Chapter briefly describes in order more Manvantaras
starting with the seventh one, with the six specific qualities.

O King Parkit! Among the ten sons of Vaivasvata Manu are
Ikvku, Nabhaga, Dha, aryti, Nariyanta and
Nbhga. The seventh son is known as Dia. Then come
Tara and Padhra, and the tenth son is known as
Vasumn.

dity vasavo rudr
vivedev marud-ga

indras te purandara
O King! In this Manvantara the dityas, the Vasus, the
Rudras, the Vivedevas, the Maruts, the two Avin-kumra
brothers and the bhus are the devats. The position of
Indra is taken by Purandara.

The word devats should be supplied.

Kayapa, Atri, Vasiha, Vivmitra, Gautama, Jamadagni
and Bharadvja are known as the seven sages.

In this Manvantara, the Supreme Lord appeared as the
youngest of all the dityas, known as Vmana, the dwarf,
from Kayapa and Aditi.

sapta-manvantari te
bhaviyy atha vakymi
vio aktynvitni ca
I have briefly explained to you the position of the first seven
Manvantaras. Now I shall describe the future Manvantaras,
along with the incarnations of Viu.

O King! I have previously described (in the Sixth Canto) the
two daughters of Vivakarm, named Saj and Chy, who
were the first two wives of Vivasvn.

chyy ca sut chu

The sun-god had a third wife, named Vaav. Of the three


wives, the wife named Saj had three children--Yama,
Yam (Yamun) and rddhadeva. Now hear about the
children of Chy.

anaicaras ttyo 'bhd
avinau vaavtmajau
Chy had a son named Svari and a daughter named
Tapat, who later became the wife of King Savaraa.
Chy's third child is known as anaicara (Saturn). Vaav
gave birth to two sons, namely the Avin brothers.

svarir bhavit manu
nirmoka-virajaskdy
svari-tanay npa
O King, when the period of the eighth Manu arrives, Svari,
Chys son, will become the Manu. Nirmoka and Virajaska
will be among his sons.

tatra dev sutapaso
viraj amtaprabh
te virocana-suto
balir indro bhaviyati
In the period of the eighth Manu, the devats will be the
Sutaps, the Virajas and the Amtaprabhas. The king of the
devats, Indra, will be Bali Mahrja, the son of Virocana.

dattvem ycamnya
viave ya pada-trayam
rddham indra-pada hitv
tata siddhim avpsyati
Bali Mahrja gave a gift of three paces of land to Lord
Viu, and because of this charity he lost all the three
worlds. Later, Bali Mahrja, after achieving the post of
Indra (during the eighth Manvantara), will give it up and
achieve perfection.

yo 'sau bhagavat baddha

niveito 'dhike svargd
adhunste sva-r iva
With great affection, the Lord bound Bali and then installed
him in the kingdom of Sutala, which is greater than Svarga.
Mahrja Bali now resides on that planet like an emperor.
He who was installed in Sutala remains there now.

sve sva rama-maale
O King, during the eighth Manvantara, the great
personalities Glava, Dptimn, Paraurma, Avatthm,
Kpcrya, yaga and our father, Vysadeva, the
incarnation of Nryaa, will be the seven sages because of
their dedication to the Lord. For the present, they are all
residing in their respective hermitages.

devaguhyt sarasvaty
srvabhauma iti prabhu
sthna purandard dhtv
balaye dsyatvara
In the eighth Manvantara, the Lord will appear as
Srvabhauma. His father will be Devaguhya, and his mother
will be Sarasvat. He will take the kingdom away from
Purandara and give it to Bali Mahrja.

navamo daka-svarir
manur varua-sambhava
bhtaketur dptaketur
ity dys tat-sut npa
O King, the ninth Manu will be Daka-svari, who is born of
Varua. Among his sons will be Bhtaketu, and Dptaketu.

pr-marcigarbhdy
dev indro 'dbhuta smta
dyutimat-pramukhs tatra
bhaviyanty ayas tata
In this ninth Manvantara, the Pras and Marcigarbhas will
be among the devats. The king of heaven, Indra, will be
named Adbhuta, and Dyutimn will be among the seven
sages.

yumato 'mbudhrym
abho bhagavat-kal
bhavit yena sarddh
tri-lok bhokyate 'dbhuta
abhadeva, an expansion of the Lord, will take birth from
his father, yumn, and his mother, Ambudhr. He will
enable the Indra named Adbhuta to enjoy the prosperity of
the three worlds.

daamo brahma-svarir
upaloka-suto manu
tat-sut bhriedy
havimat pramukh dvij
The son of Upaloka known as Brahma-svari will be the
tenth Manu. Bhriea will be among his sons, and the
brhmaas headed by Havimn will be the seven sages.
|| 8.13.22 ||
havimn sukta satyo
jayo mrtis tad dvij
suvsana-viruddhdy
dev ambhu surevara
Havimn, Sukta, Satya, Jaya, Mrti and others will also be
among the seven sages, the Suvsanas and Viruddhas will
be the devats, and ambhu will be their king, Indra.

vivakseno vicy tu
ambho sakhya kariyati
jta svena bhagavn
ghe vivasjo vibhu

In the home of Vivasra, the Lord will appear from the


womb of Vic as the expansion known as Vivaksena. He
will make friends with ambhu.

manur vai dharma-svarir
ekdaama tmavn
angats tat-sut ca
satyadharmdayo daa
In the eleventh Manvantara, the Manu will be Dharmasvari, who will be in control of his senses. From him there
will come ten sons, headed by Satyadharma.

vihagam kmagam
nirvarucaya sur
indra ca vaidhtas tem
aya crudaya
The Vihagamas, Kmagamas, Nirvarucis and others will
be the devats. Indra will be Vaidhta, and the seven sages
will be headed by Arua.

ryakasya sutas tatra
dharmasetur iti smta
vaidhty harer aas
tri-lok dhrayiyati
The son of ryaka known as Dharmasetu, a portion of the
Lord will appear from the womb of Vaidht, the wife of
ryaka, and will protect the three worlds.
|| 8.13.27 ||
bhavit rudra-svar
rjan dvdaamo manu
devavn upadeva ca
devarehdaya sut
O King! The twelfth Manu will be named Rudra-svari.
Devavn, Upadeva and Devareha will be among his sons.
|| 8.13.28 ||
tadhm ca tatrendro
dev ca haritdaya
aya ca tapomrtis
tapasvy gndhrakdaya

In this Manvantara, the Indra will be tadhm, and the


devats will be headed by the Haritas. Among the sages will
be Tapomrti, Tapasv and gndhraka.

svadhmkhyo harer aa
sdhayiyati tan-mano
antara satyasahasa
sunty suto vibhu
From the mother named Sunt and the father named
Satyasah will appear Svadhm, a portion of the Lord
during this Manvantara.
Tan-mano antaram means during the Manvantara. Satyasahasa is
the father.

manus trayodao bhvyo
deva-svarir tmavn
citrasena-vicitrdy
deva-svari-dehaj
The thirteenth Manu will be named Deva-svari, controlled
in his senses. Among his sons will be Citrasena and Vicitra.

dev sukarma-sutrmasaj indro divaspati
nirmoka-tattvadardy
bhaviyanty ayas tad
In the thirteenth Manvantara, the Sukarms and Sutrmas
will be the devats, Divaspati will be Indra, and Nirmoka and
Tattvadara will be among the seven sages.

devahotrasya tanaya
upahart divaspate
yogevaro harer ao
bhaty sambhaviyati
The son of Devahotra known as Yogevara will appear as a
portion of the Lord from the womb of Bhat. He will
perform activities for the welfare of Divaspati.
The Lord will do beneficial acts for Divaspati, Indra.

The name of the fourteenth Manu will be Indra-svari. He
will have sons like Uru, Gambhra and Budha.

agnir bhu uci uddho
mgadhdys tapasvina
The Pavitras and Ckuas will be the devats, and uci will
be Indra, the king of heaven. Agni, Bhu, uci, uddha,
Mgadha and others will be the seven sages.
Tapasvina means sages.

satryaasya tanayo
bhadbhnus tad hari
vitny mahrja
kriy-tantn vityit
O King Parkit! In the fourteenth Manvantara the Supreme
Lord will appear from the womb of Vitn, and a father
named Satryaa as Bhadbhnu, and he will spread karmayoga.
|| 8.13.36 ||
rja caturdaaitni
tri-klnugatni te
proktny ebhir mita kalpo
yuga-shasra-paryaya
O King! I have now described to you the fourteen
Manvantaras which appear in the past, present and future.
The total duration of time ruled by these Manus is one day
of Brahm consisting of a thousand yuga cycles.
The fourteen Manvantaras end (paryaya) after a thousand yuga
cycles.
Thus ends the commentary on the Thirteenth Chapter of the Eighth
Canto of the Bhgavatam for the pleasure of the devotees, in
accordance with the previous cryas.
