THE ORDER OF WORSHIP

Ninth Sunday after Pentecost (Lectionary 17b)

July 25 & 26, 2015
Holy Communion

PRELUDE Prelude in Eb from Book Two of the Well-Tempered Clavier Bach

INTRODUCTION

INVOCATION

What we have, what we bring to Jesus' table seems like it is not nearly
enough to meet all the needs we see around us. It is not the adequacy of our
supplies or our skills that brings about the realm of God: it is the power of
Jesus working in the littlest and least to transform this world into the world
God desires, a world where all the hungry are satisfied. Today Jesus feeds
thousands of people with five loaves and two fish. Today we welcome
Grace Elizabeth Johnston into the Church through the sacrament of Holy
Baptism.

In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

WELCOME

CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

Brothers and sisters, if we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves,
and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God who is faithful and
just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags

and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed.
An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate
all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.
We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.

Most merciful God,

we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We
have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have
done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our
whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the
sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us,
and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW

Lord God of our ancestors, we thank you for what you have done and will
continue to do with our daughters and sons. Walk with them in life, and
keep the evil one from obstructing their path. You see all; you know where
the water is deep. Keep them from danger. Order their steps and guide their
feet while they run the race of faith. May the good work that you have
begun in them be brought to completion at the day of Jesus Christ, in whose
name we pray. Amen.

In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for
his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of
the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the
entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the +
Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray.
Gracious God, you have placed within the hearts of all your children a
longing for your word and a hunger for your truth. Grant that we may know
your Son to be the true bread of heaven and share this bread with all the
world, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
Please be seated.
A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN
FIRST READING: 2 Kings 4:4244
42

A man came from Baal-shalishah, bringing food from the first fruits to the
man of God: twenty loaves of barley and fresh ears of grain in his sack.
Elisha said, "Give it to the people and let them eat." 43But his servant said,
"How can I set this before a hundred people?" So he repeated, "Give it to
the people and let them eat, for thus says the LORD, 'They shall eat and
have some left.'" 44He set it before them, they ate, and had some left,
according to the word of the LORD.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING: Ephesians 3:1421

14

PSALM Psalm 145:1018

Refrain:

Tone:

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15from whom every
family in heaven and on earth takes its name. 16I pray that, according to the
riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner
being with power through his Spirit, 17and that Christ may dwell in your
hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. 18I pray
that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the
breadth and length and height and depth, 19and to know the love of Christ
that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of
God.
20
Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to
accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, 21to him be
glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever.
Amen.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL

John 6:1-21

The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John.

Glory to you, O Lord.
After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the
Sea of Tiberias. 2A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the
signs that he was doing for the sick. 3Jesus went up the mountain and sat
down there with his disciples. 4Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews,
was near. 5When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him,
Jesus said to Philip, "Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?"
6
He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do.
7
Philip answered him, "Six months' wages would not buy enough bread for
each of them to get a little." 8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's
brother, said to him, 9There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and
two fish. But what are they among so many people? 10Jesus said, "Make
the people sit down." Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so
they sat down, about five thousand in all. 11Then Jesus took the loaves, and
when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so
also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12When they were satisfied, he told
his disciples, "Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be
lost." 13So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley
loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. 14When the
people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, "This is indeed the
prophet who is to come into the world."
15
When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him
by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
16
When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17got
into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and
Jesus had not yet come to them. 18The sea became rough because a strong
wind was blowing. 19When they had rowed about three or four miles, they
saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were
terrified. 20But he said to them, "It is I; do not be afraid." 21Then they
wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land
toward which they were going.
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
Please be seated.

Come To the Water

PRESENTATION
Candidates for baptism, sponsors, and parents gather with the ministers at
the font. The assembly is seated.
The presiding minister may address the assembly in these or similar words:
In baptism our gracious heavenly Father frees us from sin and death by
joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are
born children of a fallen humanity; by water and the Holy Spirit we are
reborn children of God and made members of the church, the body of
Christ. Living with Christ and in the communion of saints, we grow in
faith, love, and obedience to the will of God.
Graces sponsors present her together:
We present Grace Elizabeth for baptism.
The presiding minister addresses Graces parents:
Called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you
desire to have Grace Elizabeth baptized into Christ?
Response:
We do.
The presiding minister continues:
As you bring your child to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted
with responsibilities:
to live with her among God's faithful people,
bring her to the word of God and the holy supper,
teach her the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten
Commandments,
place in her hands the holy scriptures,
and nurture her in faith and prayer,
so that she may learn to trust God,
proclaim Christ through word and deed,
care for others and the world God made,
and work for justice and peace.

Do you promise to help Grace Elizabeth grow in the Christian faith and
life?

The minister addresses the entire congregation:

Do you believe in God the Father?
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Response:
We do.
The presiding minister addresses sponsors:
Sponsors, do you promise to nurture Grace Elizabeth in the Christian faith
as you are empowered by God's Spirit, and to help them live in the
covenant of baptism and in communion with the church?
Response:
We do.
The presiding minister addresses the assembly:
People of God, do you promise to support Grace Elizabeth and pray for her
in her new life in Christ?
We do.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at
the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and
the dead.
Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
everlasting.
THANKSGIVING AT THE FONT

Please stand.
PROFESSION OF FAITH
The minister addresses Graces sponsors and family
I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the
faith of the church.
Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God?
Response:
I renounce them.
Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God?
Response:
I renounce them.
Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God?
Response:
I renounce them.

Water may be poured into the font before or during the thanksgiving. At the
font, the presiding minister begins the thanksgiving:
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Blessed are you, O God, maker and ruler of all things. Your voice
thundered over the waters at creation. You water the mountains and send
springs into the valleys to refresh and satisfy all living things.
Through the waters of the flood you carried those in the ark to safety.
Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery to freedom. In the
wilderness you nourished them with water from the rock, and you brought
them across the river Jordan to the promised land.
By the baptism of his death and resurrection, your Son Jesus has carried us
to safety and freedom. The floods shall not overwhelm us, and the deep
shall not swallow us up, for Christ has brought us over to the land of
promise. He sends us to make disciples, baptizing in the name of the Father,

and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

WELCOME

Pour out your Holy Spirit; wash away sin in this cleansing water; clothe the
baptized with Christ; and claim your daughters and sons, no longer slave
and free, no longer male and female, but one with all the baptized in Christ
Jesus, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one
God, now and forever.
Amen.

A lighted candle may be given to each of the newly baptized (to a sponsor
of a young child) as a representative of the congregation says:

Please be seated.
BAPTISM
The presiding minister baptizes each candidate. The candidate is immersed
into the water, or water is poured on the candidate's head, as the presiding
minister says:

Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works
and glorify your Father in heaven.
The ministers and the baptismal group face the assembly. A representative
of the congregation leads the assembly in the welcome.
Let us welcome the newly baptized.
We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share:
join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God's creative
and redeeming word to all the world.
HYMN OF THE DAY: What Wondrous Love Is This (ELW 666)

Grace Elizabeth, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
After the baptism, the assembly may respond with this acclamation:

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
Gathered by the Holy Spirit and fed by the word, we come together as the
people of God to pray for the church, the world, and all in need.

Blessed be God, the source of all life, the word of salvation, the spirit of
mercy.
Laying both hands on the head of each of the newly baptized, the minister
prays:
Sustain Grace Elizabeth with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of
wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of
knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both
now and forever.
Amen.

Please sit or kneel as you are able.

Each petition ends with:
Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.
Into your hands, loving God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting
in the grace of Jesus our Savior.
Amen.
FARWELL AND GODSPEED TO THE BENOLKIN FAMILY

The presiding minister marks the sign of the cross on the forehead of of the
baptized. Oil prepared for this purpose may be used. As the sign of the
cross is made, the minister says:
Grace Elizabeth, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and
marked with the cross of Christ forever.
Amen.

PEACE
The peace of Christ be with you always.
And also with you.

DIALOGUE

Holy, Holy, Holy (ELW 190a)

LORD'S PRAYER
Risen Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
INVITATION TO COMMUNION
All who desire to leave their old lives behind and live in Christ, come to the
feast!

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In
great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick
and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross,
opened his arms to all.
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave
thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my
body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to
drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and
for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await
his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and
unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of
Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor
and glory, now and forever.
Amen.

All baptized people are welcome to the table to receive Christs body and
blood. If you have not been baptized, you are also welcome to the table as
Gods guest; we are honored by your presence. We recognize the Body of
Christ as the community of the baptized, so if you would like to become
part of the Body of Christ, we encourage you to seek baptism. If you cant
or dont wish to receive today, we encourage you to hold your hands over
your chest for a blessing as you come forward.
COMMUNION
The body of Christ, given for you.
The blood of Christ, shed for you.
Amen.

he proclaimed the gospel in music. Handel's great work, Messiah, is a
