Our week: CLASS NEWS
We have managed to accomplish a lot February 15-19
in this four day week! In math, we finished
Unit 5 with comparisons between fractions and Spanish with Senorita Leon
decimals. The intention in this curriculum is to
expose 5th graders to this challenging concept,
but without expecting mastery at this time. For
the rest of the week, we reviewed all of our
fraction work, and then took the unit test on
Friday. Next week we begin multiplication
and division with whole numbers and
decimals.
This week we began a science unit,
titled “Variables”. With this three week focus,
we hope to give our students some important,
fundamental science knowledge that they will
build on in middle school and beyond. Our
class conducted experiments with Lifeboats, Book Club Presentations:
exploring concepts of capacity, volume, and The Dragons of Lonely Island Group
variables. See a sample page from our Science
Lab Notebooks at right. Ask your son or
daughter to explain what a controlled
experiment is. Our reading this week
connected with this science unit as well. The
kids are very excited for this learning; our
discussions have been about taking science
seriously. We have important work to do in CONTACT
this time. We need to be careful and precise in INFORMATION:

materials. This has been a really nice change Room 115
of routine for us.
