Play the My New Classmates Scoot Game on

the First Day of School!

Years ago a 1st Graders parent told me that she was trying to ask
him about his new friends in the class, but he couldnt remember
their names. Ever since then, I have done this activity to help bridge
the communication with parents and students about their brand new
class! Parents love being able to ask about names and help their
child remember their new friends!
DIRECTIONS

1.
2.

3.

4.

Give each student a My New Classmates recording form.

(Choose the numbers that work for your class)
Each desk should have a pencil, crayon, marker or
whatever you choose. A different color at each desk
could be fun.
Students stand up behind their chair and write their
Name at the top of their page.
Then on your signal, (bell, chimes, lights, etc.) they move
one desk to the right. (You may want to do a practice run before the
game so they know where to go to circle the room and return to their own seat.)

5.

6.

Students copy the name on the desk plate nametag from

the desk they are at. Then keep going till everyone is
back to their own seat.
Students end up going home with a class list of new
classmates names!

4 New Friends Interview

Have students choose 4 friends to chat with and ask some questions
about favorite things and what they like. These are 4 special friends
that they can talk about at home, sit with at lunchtime or play with
on the playground. Help to make some special connections that
otherwise may have taken some time. Get those friendships started
and a Caring Classroom begins to emerge.
DIRECTIONS

1.

2.
3.

4.

5.

6.

Brainstorm some good Get-To-Know You conversation

questions. What is your favorite? What do you
like?
Give each student a 4 New Friends recording form.
Give about 5 minutes for students to talk one on one or
in small groups, or give a total of 20-25 minutes for
students to walk around and talk to 4 friends.
Have students record their friends names, and write or
draw something that they like. (e.g. dogs, cars, sports,
dance, ice cream, etc.)
Have a Share time after students complete their 4 New
Friends Interviews. They can practice their speaking and
listening skills in recounting what they have learned
about each other.
Send the Interview Sheets home for some great family
discussions about the new friends kiddos have met in
school!
