The most likely reason
would be that you may have
gotten one of the selections
that is more shrubby. The
stems themselves will tell
the tale. If they twine around
one another, you have the
standard type, but if they’re
straight and seem uninter-
ested in wrapping, you don’t
have the same type you had
in prior years. Next time,
buy plants that are growing
on stakes so you’ll know.
Dear Neil: I bought a 10-
foot weeping willow late last
summer. It was doing well
until mid-summer when I
noticed a lot of yellowing
and leaf drop. I’ve been wa-
tering it twice a week. Is that
too much? What type of fer-
tilizer should I be using?
This isn’t about fertilizer,
and, it’s not about over-wa-
tering, either. Willows can
grow in standing water
along a lakeshore. This is
either transplant shock, or
you may have let the tree
get too dry for a short period
of time (once is all it takes).
Weeping willows’ life expec-
tancy in Texas landscapes
is somewhere between four
and eight years. Yours may
be reducing that average.

Don’t let your life’s goals fall by the wayside

COUNSELING
ASSOCIATION
Most of us have dreams
and goals that we once
thought were keys to our
happiness, but that, for
whatever reasons, we just
never quite achieved.
This doesn’t necessarily
mean we’re not happy with
our lives, but we still may
feel frustrated or disap-
pointed about those unful-
filled dreams.
While there’s no magic
way to make all your dreams
come true, you can take ac-
tion to get closer to your
life’s goals and to lessen
those feelings of frustration.
A starting point is to put
the past behind you. Hold-
ing on to unresolved anger
and old resentments uses
up energy and accomplishes
nothing. Forget past hurts
or abandonments and in-
stead begin managing your
daily life so that it reflects
who you are and what you
value.
It also helps to be realistic
in evaluating your goals. In
romance, for example, there
is no “ideal” relationship or
“perfect” mate. But there
can be someone who can
accept and care about the
real you, and who is able to
get things right more often
than wrong. Similarly, there
is no perfect job, but there
are work situations that can
challenge you and provide
a real sense of accomplish-
ment.
Knowing yourself is vi-
tal to feeling more fulfilled.
What are your personal
strengths and interests?
Once identified, put time
and energy into nourishing
them. Rather than trying to
be someone you’re not, en-
hance who you already are.
Whatever you do well, do it
frequently and proudly and
you’ll find that rewards will
follow.
If you want to achieve spe-
cific goals, it’s vital to take
action toward them, rather
than simply dreaming about
them and waiting for things
to happen. Even small steps
in the right direction make a
difference. Maybe it’s a first

Energy-efficient homes are increasingly popular

In designing his custom
home, Robert Evans was
very specific about his wants
and needs.
But his priorities had noth-
ing to do with tile or granite
colors, or even the carpet or
walk-in closets.
Energy efficiency was his
main concern.
“I’m not behind the times,
I’m ahead of the times,” Ev-
ans said as he stood in his
un-landscaped front yard
and looked at his almost
completed three-bedroom,
two-bath home located in the
Silver Lakes Ranches sub-di-
vision in Sunset. “I’m looking
at success.”
As a cross-country driver,
Evans will only spend one
weekend a month in his new
home. But, he can rest as-
sured that while he’s gone,
his home is operating more
efficiently than the average
home.
Evans’ home has achieved
Energy Star certification
with a Home Energy Raters
(HERS) Index of 76. Basi-
cally, the index score means
that Evans’ home is 24 per-
cent more efficient than a
home built to the 2004 In-
ternational Residential Code
(IRC).
In 2007, 120,000 homes
nationwide were built to
meet Energy Star qualifica-
tions, bringing the total up to
840,000 qualified homes.
Some local builders are
beginning to pay attention
to those guidelines set forth
by Energy Star. Along with
labeling energy efficient ap-
pliances, lighting, home elec-
tronics and other products,
homeowners can now get an

it’s vital for unmarried wom-
en. Here’s what you should
know.
Retirement struggles
It’s an unfortunate real-
ity that unmarried women
– whether they’re divorced,
widowed or never married
– face far greater financial
challenges than men in re-
tirement. Why? Because
women tend to make less
money (77 cents for every
dollar a man makes) and
have shorter working ca-
reers (due to raising chil-
dren and/or caring for aging
parents) than men. And less
money earned usually trans-
lates into less money saved
and a lower Social Security
benefit when you retire.
On top of that, women live
an average of five years lon-
ger than men which requires
their retirement income to
stretch farther. And, accord-
with the Women’s Institute
for a Secure Retirement. A
savvy resource that offers
easy-to-understand infor-
mation on topics like money
management, retirement
planning, saving and invest-
ing, as well as Social Secu-

Searching for your birth family
Deciding to find your birth
family can be a life chang-
ing decision.
It’s a personal journey
that could alter your per-
ceptions of your family and
yourself.
“Many adoptees want to
know who their biological
parents are and their an-
cestry,” said Patricia Mo-
lina, the Texas Department
of State Health Services
coordinator for the Central
Adoption Registry.
“Many people are inter-
ested in finding out more
about their family back-
ground, where they get
their talents, or about their
family medical history.”
The Texas Vital Statistics
Central Adoption Registry
reunites adult adoptees
with birth parents or sib-
lings who register looking
for them.
This registry is unique
because it has the author-
ity to access sealed files or
confidential records without
a court order.
Information may be re-
leased when an adopted
person and his or her birth
parent or a biological sibling
both register voluntarily.
The registry releases
identifying information af-
ter the adopted person and
the biological relative com-
plete the following:
■ A consent form to re-
lease personal information
with their name, address,
phone number and e-mail
address.
■ A one-hour post-adop-
tion counseling session that
educates and prepares each
person for the reunion.
■ A written biography or
history about the person’s
life.
■ Copies of pictures from
infancy to adulthood, school
pictures, their current fam-
ily or other visual items.
Once these conditions are
met, the registry sends each
participant the registry in-
formation and the biogra-
phy of the other person.
Then it’s up to both par-
ties to decide on when and
where to meet.
“Meeting your birth fam-
ily may be very healing,”
Molina said.
“However, it’s important
to be prepared for all types
of scenarios because there
are no guarantees what will
happen or what you may
find.”
The Office of Vital Statis-
tics keeps the original birth
certificate so it’s easy to au-
thenticate a match between
two biologically related peo-
ple.
This saves a lot of time
without going through the
court system or searching
through other sources.
There are more than 30
child-placing agencies in
Texas that operate their
own voluntary adoption
registry.
The Central Adoption
Registry maintains a list
of these child-placing agen-
cies.
If an agency was involved
in the adoption, the registry
will identify that agency so
that you can request servic-
es from them.
Basic requirements for
the Central Adoption Regis-
try include:
■ A person must be ad-
opted in Texas or be born
in Texas and adopted in an-
other state.
■ Be the birth parent or
sibling of the adoptee.
■ Be 18 years of age or

of Mesquite trees situated

and a water source for the
opening day hunt. Our little
unofficial dove survey re-
sulted in great anticipation
for a barrel burning shoot in
a couple weeks. Bryan is an
excellent camp cook and he’s
planning an opening day bar-
becue for his dove hunting
guests. It seems a long time
since the close of our hunt-
ing seasons and hunters from
across the state are anxious
to break out their shotguns
and get into the dove fields.
I’m planning to open bow
season on the ranch and af-
ter scouting for doves, we
headed to a remote section of
the ranch and I set my ladder
stand in close proximity to a
feeder that has been throw-
ing high protein deer chow
for over a year. A trail camera
positioned nearby evidenced
the passing of some might big
whitetail bucks, including a
10 pointer that I am willing
to devote the time to hunt,
come late September!
We chopped a hole into the
side of a big cedar and posi-
tioned Hood’s crossbow tripod
stand inside the heavy cover,
about 20 yards east of his
feeder. As we drove into the
area Bob is planning to hunt,

Pickles and ice cream may
sound like a mouth-water-
ing meal for your pregnant
Aunt Peggy, but when your
pooch is expecting a litter,
nix the pickles and pack on
the protein.
Pregnant and nursing ca-
nines require an increased
supply of nutrients, espe-
cially calcium and protein,
to support multiple growing
fetuses, says Teresa Shisk, a
veterinary technician in the
College of Veterinary Medi-
cine & Biomedical Sciences
at Texas A&M University.
“Pregnant dogs not only
have to support their grow-
ing puppies, but themselves
as well,” said Shisk. “This is
especially true if the mother
is two years or younger, be-
cause younger dogs are still
growing themselves and
cannot afford to exhaust
their nutrient reserves.”
During the pregnancy,
which typically lasts 58 to
65 days, the fetuses will use
calcium in the mother’s body
to form strong bones, says
Shisk. Once the puppies are
born, the mother’s calcium
will be used to produce milk
to feed her litter. But if she
hasn’t been on a calcium-
rich diet, she may not have
enough calcium to support
herself, resulting in a poten-
tially life-threatening condi-
tion called eclampsia.
Shisk says to keep your
dog from experiencing any
deficiencies, a quality diet
goes a long way.
“If your dog is on a good
diet, it can stay on that diet
until the last two weeks
of pregnancy,” Shisk said.
“Much of the puppies’ devel-
opment will occur in the two
weeks before the mother
gives birth. Because they’re
using more nutrients, the
mother will need to ingest
more nutrients. Then you’ll
need to put her on a quality
puppy formula.”
But why would an adult
dog need food designed for
pups?
Typically, puppy formulas
are high in energy, easily
digestible, contain a larger
quantity of body-building
protein and provide an ad-
equate supply of calcium,
says Shisk. She advises con-
tinuing puppy food after the
dog gives birth and through-
out her lactating period. An
added bonus is that the pup-
pies, once ready to try solid
food, will be able to nibble
from their mother’s bowl
and receive the right mix of
nutrients.
Vitamins are available for
pregnant and nursing dogs
but there is no substitute for
a quality diet, says Shisk.
“You can’t fix a bad diet with
vitamins,” she believes.
Because her stomach is
under more pressure than
usual, your dog will prob-
ably eat smaller meals on
a more frequent basis, she
notes.
“As long as the dog doesn’t
have any medical problems
and is basically healthy,
it will consume enough to
maintain itself and not over-
eat,” Shisk said. “A complete
loss of appetite is usually a
good indication that she will
go into labor soon.”
Even though it may look
like Fifi isn’t getting her
fill, pregnancy is no time to
tempt her with table food.
“You want to be careful
not to upset her balance,”
said Shisk.
