Parish House/Chapel Hours

The parish house and chapel at 126 S. Central Ave. will be open from 8 to noon on Monday,
Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Maxine works Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday mornings; she is not in the office on Wednes-
days or Fridays.
Sally’s day off is Wednesday. Sally plans on being at the parish house on Friday mornings, ex-
cept from 10-11:30 a.m. during Bible study at Michelle’s. Meetings that Sally regularly attends are
noted on the calendar on page 7. See the article “Sally’s Calendar” for a description of those activities.

Sally’s Calendar
The monthly calendar on page 7 shows Sally’s regularly scheduled
meetings. But what ARE MOCA, the Rolla and Tuesday sermon lectionary
groups, Chi Alpha, and mentoring?
Sermon lectionary -- On Tuesday afternoons Sally meets with other
area Episcopal clergy to discuss the readings (“propers”) for the upcoming
Sunday. The group currently meets at Holy Communion Episcopal Church in University City.
Sally has been a member of this group since 2001.
Rolla lectionary -- Sally is also a member of a sermon lectionary group consisting of the
Episcopal clergy from Rolla, St. James, Cuba, and now Eureka. This group meets at the Hen
House Restaurant in Bourbon, MO, twice a month to discuss the upcoming Sunday readings.
MOCA -- stands for Missouri Clergy Association. MOCA is a part of the National Net-
work of Episcopal Clergy Associations (NNECA), a nationwide organization. MOCA invites all
Episcopal clergy in the Diocese of Missouri to gather four or five times a year for lunch, collegi-
ality, and conversation. On January 21, Sally Weaver was elected President of MOCA. At the
next meeting on March 4, the clergy will be discussing the proposed revision to the Diocesan
policy on serving alcohol at church functions. The policy, which hasn’t been updated since
1985, will be presented at the Diocesan Convention in November 2010.
Chi Alpha -- Twice a month, early on Friday mornings Sally attends Chi Alpha, which is
an ecumenical study group. The members of Chi Alpha include Roman Catholic, Methodist,
Baptist, Presbyterian, United Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, and Episcopal clergy. During
the program portion of each meeting a member presents a theological or ministerial topic for
discussion.
Mentoring -- Sally spends Wednesday evenings mentoring a teenage girl from St. Louis
County’s juvenile detention system.

Vicar’s Forum January 3

Following worship on January 3, Sally (after 3 days on the job!) presented her top 2010 priorities and
asked those present to do the same.
Sally’s top priorities for 2010:
• “Learn ya” – Get to know the people of St. Francis’
• Christian formation for children
• Worship/spiritual formation
• Communications
• Visibility in the community
• Pastoral care
Outreach and Christian Formation for Adults weren’t among her top priorities because these areas are
so robust at St. Francis’. These are areas where she will provide support, but which don’t require significant
initiation time on her part. Church growth/evangelism is also not listed because Sally believes growth will
occur once we’ve attended to the priorities.
The Congregation’s top priorities:
• Christian formation for children
… Children’s programs
… Youth-led services
• Communications
… Continued communications internally within congregation
… Quarterly check-ups with members to see how we’re progressing
• Visibility
… More involvement with other denominations
… More news articles in The Current with pictures
• Growth
… More members — a goal of 5 new families in 2010
… More strength in the choir
… More people participating in all our ministries
… Growth in faith – baptism, confirmation
• Facilities
… Continue to upgrade the facilities to be more warm and welcoming
• Outreach
… More local (geographically close to Eureka) outreach
… Using the Parish House for community outreach such as AA meetings, etc.
Page 5

• Attitude/feelings
… More tolerance for the less tolerant
… Continued positiveness throughout St. Francis’
… Feel financially secure

Linda Doolittle is heading a group focused on providing Christian education for our children.

Ash Wednesday Services

Lent begins on Wednesday, February 17 and we will celebrate the Eucharist with
imposition of ashes at 6 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the Parish House – 126 S. Central Ave.,
Eureka. There will be no music.
The service is brief – and suitable for those going to or coming from work. This
is an ideal beginning for “the observance of a holy Lent.”

Four Thursdays in Lent -- Eat ‘n Pray

Mark your calendars and plan on joining us Thursdays at the Parish House:
Feb 25, March 4, March 11, March 18, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
It’s a “bring your own brown bag” supper, followed by a session on prayer, presented by Vicar Sally
Weaver. We’ll learn about prayer and we’ll practice praying with Scripture. Each session will conclude
with Evening Prayer.

Bishop’s Committee Retreat

On Saturday, February 13, the 2010 Bishop’s Committee is meeting at the Parish House from 8:30
a.m. until 2 p.m. This newly formed team will develop 2010 goals and review our ways of operating and
organizing. Look for information from the retreat in the next Chalice.

4th Sundays – Anointing

Each 4th Sunday of the month, following Holy Communion, worshippers are invited to come for-
ward to be anointed for healing. If you are in need of healing -- from grief or loss, a physical infirmity, an
unreconciled relationship – from whatever source and for whatever reason, you are welcome to come for-
ward. You’ll be anointed with healing oil and fellow parishioners may come forward to put their hands on
you as we pray for Christ’s healing touch.

Website Update and Call for Photos
Our website, www.stfranciseureka.org, is being updated, thanks to Carroll Dick. It’s a work in progress,
so watch for the content to continue changing. Photos of the people of St. Francis’ engaging in worship, outreach,
fellowship, and other ministries will make our website more appealing and inviting. So, if you like to take pic-
tures please bring your camera as we gather and start shooting. The digital images can be sent to Carroll Dick or
to the office, stfranch@sbcglobal.net.

Hymn Sing
Following worship on January 17, the congregation sang hymns that are beloved by St. Francis’ parish-
ioner. Music Director Lori Scissors had asked each of us to send her our list of hymns that are especially mean-
ingful. Lori worked hard to find the hymns, especially those not in the 1982 Hymnal. This list of much loved
hymns will be used in planning worship in 2010. Thank you to Lori and to all who participated in singing. We
sounded good!

Bishop’s Committee Highlights

Sally Weaver led the Bishop’s Committee meeting for the first time on January 17. The Bishop’s Com-
mittee passed a resolution signifying the amount of Sally’s compensation that would be designated as “housing
allowance” in 2010. Treasurer Nancy Bergmann presented the proposed 2010 budget. After thoughtful discus-
sion and deliberation, the Bishop’s Committee adopted the budget for presentation at the annual meeting on Janu-
ary 24.

The Current
Sally Weaver was interviewed for an article to be in the February 14 issue of Eureka-Pacific’s The Cur-
rent magazine. This should be great press for St. Francis’ Church, increasing our visibility in the community.

records may be updated, you are urged to pick up and complete the salmon-colored sheets that will be available in
the lobby at the Lodge on Sunday and return it to the Parish Office or just leave with the Teller sheets for Maxine
to pick up. Knowing who to serve and how best to serve our members, requires data on who we are. Let’s help
the Vicar, Bishop’s Committee and Committee Chairpersons in planning appropriate programs and activities by
letting them know who we are with facts and figures.

A Great Donation
Have you sometimes gotten tired of some of the artwork in The Chalice or an-
nouncements? Well get ready for some changes! Maxine has a new toy. Carroll Dick has
given St. Francis some discs that will provide a world of images, many especially designed
for church use.
Of course — the greatest variety in artwork for The Chalice and other communica-
tion at St. Francis’ are those wonderful pictures you all are going to submit! Just send or e-mail them to Maxine
Heller in the Parish Office.

Palms for Burning

Please bring your palm branches from last year's Palm Sunday service and drop them into the basket in the
lobby of the Masonic Lodge on Sunday morning. We'll burn them to create the ashes for the Ash Wednesday
services on Feb 17.

Annual Meeting — 2010

St. Francis’ annual meeting was held after the worship service on January 24. In addition to enjoying
good food and celebrating all our many accomplish-
ments of 2009, we elected new leadership and adopted
a budget for 2010.
St. Francis’ is a church deeply committed to
helping those in need in our community. You can read
about all the good works of the Outreach Committee
in 2009 in the annual meeting report. The people of
St. Francis’ give generously of their time and talents.
We recognized those involved in worship, from our Music Director and Choir to our Altar Guild and Ushers.
We also honored those involved in special projects throughout the year.
We owed a special “thank you!” to Cassie Eckhardt, our outgoing Senior Warden, and to our Junior
Warden, Suzanne Jones. Being a warden during a time of clergy transition is an enormous task. Cassie and
Suzanne shouldered their responsibilities with wisdom, grace, and good humor.
We thanked outgoing Bishop’s Committee members Ruth Dick and Elaine Booker and we welcomed
incoming Bishop Committee members -- Senior Warden Barb Sacco; Cassie Eckhardt, and Kathleen McDon-
ald, who have agreed to continue as members of the Bishop’s Committee for 2010. Cassie Eckhardt and Mi-
chael Booker have also agreed to serve as our Diocesan Convention delegates. At a brief Bishop’s Committee
meeting following the annual meeting, Suzanne Jones and Steve Strathearn were appointed Junior Warden and
Clerk, respectively.
Treasurer Nancy Bergmann, explained the proposed 2010 budget. We’re grateful to Nancy for her
continued service to St. Francis’ and for her clear presentation of the budget and St. Francis’ financial position.
A detailed copy of the 2010 budget is contained in the Annual Report of Activities.
For the first time, an Annual Report of Activities for the preceding year was distributed and an up-
dated version will be available on Sundays for the next few weeks. Please grab a copy (it has a red cover), and
if we have missed some activity, project or person who pursued an activity on behalf of St. Francis’ during
2009, just mark up the report, put Maxine’s name on the cover and leave it with the Teller material for her to
pick up on Monday morning.

Annual Meeting – Addendum: The altar!

We apologize for failing to mention the building and dedicating of St. Francis’ beautiful altar as a very
important special project in 2009. Nick Sacco spent many hours crafting our gorgeously detailed altar. Stevie
Sewell provided funds for the materials and Barb Sacco made the altar hangings, which allow us to change the
colors to match each liturgical season. We are grateful to Stevie and Barb, and especially to Nick for the fine
craftsmanship. Without them the altar would not have been possible.

Waters of Hope and St. Francis’

At the Diocesan Convention on Nov 21, 2009, a resolution was unanimously passed that mentions St.
Francis’ Church. The resolution recognizes the bicycle riders for “Waters of Hope,” who raised $110,000 over
the course of two years for clean water projects in Sudan and Swaziland.
In part the resolution says:
“Whereas, [the Rev. Joseph Chambers], [the Rev. Mitchell Smith of Iowa] and over 40 cyclists from
Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, and Idaho trained, participated in the ride, and raised funds, were joined by
support staff, and were hosted by congregations of Transfiguration – Lake St. Louis, Calvary – Louisi-
ana, Trinity – Hannibal, Trinity – Kirksville, Calvary – Columbia, New Hope – Columbia, Episcopal
Campus Ministry – Columbia, St. Matthew’s – Mexico, St. Alban’s – Fulton, Grace – Jefferson City,
Trinity – St. James, Christ Church – Rolla, St. John and St. James – Sullivan, St. Francis’ – Eureka, St.
Martin’s – Ellisville, and Christ Church Cathedral, which supported, fed, and housed the cyclists and
support drivers… “
The resolution concludes by “offer[ing] thanks to Almighty God for the vision and ministry of Waters of Hope,
its volunteers, its riders, and its leaders.”

Prayer for St. Francis’

We pray for the witness, renewal, and growth of our parish family. Open the
door of St. Francis’ Church, O God, wide enough to beckon those of every
age and situation,. Smooth the threshold into an inviting pathway for children
and for straying feet; and fill all who enter here with your Divine love and
peace, and with our human love and fellowship.
Amen.

Haven’t we all prayed this prayer at

some time?

Thank you God for standing by me so far this day.

Happy Valentine’s With your help I haven’t been impatient, grumpy
or judgmental. But, I’ll need all the help I can get,
Day because I’ll be getting out of bed soon!
