CAN BABIES BE HELD TOO MUCH?

Babies need lots of cuddling. They

like to see the faces, hear the voices,
and listen to the heartbeats of their
parents. Newborns can even detect
the unique smell of each parent. Af- 08
ter being fed, burped, and changed,
many babies simply want to be held.
Parents often ask if babies can be
spoiled if they are held too much.
Many pediatricians believe spoiling
does not occur in such early stages.
Infants vary in how much they want to
be held—some demand a lot of atten-
tion while others can spend long pe-
riods of time calmly sitting alone. Ba-
bies who like attention can be picked
up, worn in a front carrier, or placed
next to other adults or children.
