Can a person in their early
50s have osteoporosis? When
I broke my wrist last month
the doctor that treated me
told me the fracture may be
a result of osteoporosis. Is
this possible, and if so, what
can I do about it?

Dear Brenda,
For years, osteoporosis has
been considered a disease
that affects only the elderly,
but the fact is more than half
of all Americans over age 50
are at risk. Here’s what you
should know.
Osteoporosis is a bone-
thinning disease often
called the “silent disease”
because most people don’t
know they have it until they
break a bone. In the United
States today, around 10 mil-
lion people age 50 and older
already have osteoporosis,
while another 34 million
have osteopenia – which
means they are at risk of
developing it. But the good
news is osteoporosis is both
preventable and treatable.
Are you at risk?
Most people, by the time
they reach their late 30’s,
gradually start losing some
of their bone mass, but for
women menopause is the
time when this process re-
ally accelerates. Bone loss
for men occurs much more
slowly. However, by age 75,
osteoporosis is as common
in men as it is in women.
(Tip: check your personal
risk at www.yourdiseaser-

“osteoporosis”). Here are the
factors that increase your
risk:
■ Gender: Women are four
times more likely than men
of developing osteoporosis.
■ Age: Women over age
50 and men over 65 are at
greatest risk, and it increas-
es with age.
■ Ethnicity: Caucasian
and Asian women.
■ Body size: People who
are very thin or small-
boned.
■ Family history: Osteo-
porosis runs in families.
■ Hormones: Low estro-
gen levels due to missing
menstrual periods or too
early menopause – before
age 45.
■ Low calcium: A lifetime
diet low in calcium and vi-
tamin D.
■ Eating disorders: A his-
tory of anorexia or bulimia.
■ Medications: Certain
drugs including glucocorti-
coids (steroids) which are
used to control diseases such
as arthritis and asthma;
some anti-seizure medica-
tions; blood thinners; some
diuretics; some antidepres-
sants; antacids that contain
aluminum; proton pump
inhibitors; some medicines
that treat endometriosis;
some cancer drugs; and too
much thyroid hormone for an
underactive thyroid. (Note:
If you’re taking any of these
medicines, talk to your doc-
tor about what can be done
to protect your bones.)
■ Sedentary lifestyle: In-
activity weakens bones.
■ Smoking: It robs your
bones of calcium and lowers
your estrogen levels.
■ Alcohol: More than two
drinks a day can interfere
with your body’s ability to
absorb calcium.
Boning Up
It’s never too late to help
your bones (see www.nof.org

good first step in preventing
and treating osteoporosis is
to get screened. For women,
that should start around
menopause (if you’re not
taking estrogen), or for any-
one who has broken a bone
after age 50 or has other
risk factors. All women over
65 and men over 70 should
be tested every two years
(for women it’s covered by
Medicare). Screening for
osteoporosis is a simple,
painless, bone density test
which takes about five min-
utes. Here are some lifestyle
changes that can help you
protect your bones.
■ Boost your calcium:
Those over age 50 should
get over 1,200 milligrams
of calcium daily. The best
source is calcium-rich foods
such as dairy products (low-
fat milk, cheeses and yo-
gurt), fortified orange juice,
broccoli, sardines, salmon,
fortified cereals, almonds
and soybeans. If you can’t
get enough calcium through
your diet, talk to your doctor
about taking a supplement.
■ Take vitamin D: Your
body needs vitamin D to
absorb all that calcium. Ev-
eryone over 50 should take a
daily vitamin that contains
at least 400 IU (internation-
al units) of vitamin D (600
IU after age 70).
■ Exercise: At any age,
weight-bearing exercises
such as walking, stair climb-
ing, dancing and strength
training with weights or re-
sistant bands three or four
times a week can signifi-
cantly improve your bone
health.

If you were to go car shop-
ping and saw a model you
liked, one that drove well,
looked great and was in
your price range, would you
care how long it had been
on the lot? Probably not.
You’d likely feel good about
finding it and move forward
with the purchase.
What about real estate?
When you find the right
home, one that fits your
needs, does the number of
days that house has been
for sale make a difference to
you?
Some people believe a
property that has been on
the market for a while must
have serious problems. Oth-
ers believe that a house on
the market for a long period
means that the seller is des-
perate and will accept a low
offer.
I’m not saying that buying
a car and buying a house are
the same thing – far from it.
I am saying that the time a
home has been on the mar-
ket is not necessarily an in-
dicator of a property’s desir-
ability or the seller’s state of
mind.

ket (DOM) is the number of
days a property listing has
an active status in a list-
ing service. Normally, the
property’s status is changed
to pending during the pe-
riod between the seller’s
acceptance of an offer and
the actual closing. The DOM
will reset if a contract falls
through, but if the agent
fails to update the status,
the DOM continue to rise,
even though the home was
ostensibly off the market.
This happens, and through
no fault of the homeowner,
the property may now have
a deceptively high DOM.
Some houses are listed be-
fore they’re 100% ready to
sell – perhaps the seller put
the house on the market de-
spite the fact that it’s under-
going remodeling or repairs.
In this case, the home was
listed too early and probably
won’t show well. The days on
market will go up, but after
weeks of renovations, it’s not
the same house, and it will
show a great deal better.
There are also situa-
tions where the sellers are
not particularly motivated.
Maybe they don’t need to
sell and are just testing the
market. Perhaps they’ve got
a price in mind and are will-
ing to wait for the market to
catch up with that number.
A number of properties sim-
ply go unnoticed – obviously
a roadblock to a successful

I have spent a lifetime in
the outdoors but have nev-
er actually sighted a wild
mountain lion. I've come
close, very close, on several
occasions but can truly say
I don't remember ever actu-
ally sighting a lion in the
wild. Mountain Lions are
extremely secretive animals
but sightings are becoming
more and more common
in Texas and much of the
Southwest, probably be-
cause their numbers are on
the increase and the human
population is also increas-
ing; there are simply more
sets of eyes scanning the
woods and roadsides these
days than a few years ago.
Just this past week, I was
forwarded an e-mail from a
friend that contained a pic-
ture of a huge, 260 pound
mountain lion that was hit
recently by an automobile
near Aspermont. Most cats
weigh between 80 and 125
pounds. This one had ob-
viously been eating very
well. A rancher in the area
reported seeing a huge
lion take down a steer that
weighed over 300 pounds
recently. Chances are pretty
good is was the big cat that
was hit by a motorist; there
simply are not that many li-
ons of this size, even in cap-
tivity. It seems the cat was
badly injured and had to be
put down by local authori-
ties. The set of photos of the

of his paw, which appeared
to be huge.
I've been fascinated by
these big cats most of my
life and, growing up in East
Texas, I’ve heard my fair
share of ‘cat tales’, most of
which I questioned the va-
lidity. I grew up in rural
Red River County back in
the 50s and 60s and remem-
ber many tales of neigh-
bors hearing the big cats
that made sounds in the
night that sounded like ‘the
screams of a woman.’
Much later in life, I ac-
tually heard the screams
of a mountain lion female
in heat on a ranch in Jack
County. A friend had two
female mountain lions in a
big enclosure on his ranch
and the cats were about as
tame as a mountain lion

Students named
to Tarleton’s honor roll
Several Wise County residents were named to the A Hon-
or Roll list for the spring 2008 semester at Tarleton State
University.
Among them are Jillian Dean of Boyd, pre-medical; Am-
ber Everett of Bridgeport, animal science; Bryson Isom of
Bridgeport, interdisciplinary studies; and Britney Miller of
Rhome, interdisciplinary studies.
To be named to the A Honor Roll, students must have a
4.0 grade point ratio on the 4.0 system and must be enrolled
in a minimum of 12 credit hours.
Titterington earns degree
from Stephen F. Austin
Ashlee N. Titterington of Rhome received a bachelor of
science degree in child development and family living from
Stephen F. Austin State University during commencement
exercises hed May 10 at William R. Johnson Coliseum in
Nacogdoches.
Students graduate

Jacob B. Barber of Paradise and Mitchell Paul Flippin of
Decatur graduated from Stephen F. Austin State Univer-
sity on May 10.
Barber received a bachelor of arts in criminal justice law
enforcement.

Women’s network SOLUTION
awards scholarships
Wise County Area Business Women’s Network awarded
$1,000 scholarships to two 2008 graduating seniors — Adam
Lambert of Boyd High School and Megan Dupree of Alvord
High School.
Lambert is the son of Danny and Susan Lambert of Boyd
and will be attending Midwestern State University in Wich-
ita Falls.
Dupree is the daughter of Michael and Sherry Dupree of
Alvord and will be attending Texas A&M University in Col-
lege Station.
The group also awarded $1,000 scholarships to two college
students — Erin Barnett and Casey Henderson.
Barnett is the daughter of Brenda Scott of daughter and
attends Texas Woman’s University in Denton.
Henderson is the daughter of Carl and Melva Henderson
of Bridgeport and attends Texas Tech Health Science Center
School of Pharmacy in Amarillo.
The scholarships were possible by fundraising efforts by
members of Area Business Women’s Network, a non-profit
organization. The organization meets the second Thursday of
every month alternating between Decatur and Bridgeport.

Team Coordinator – Responsible for improving plant efficiency and

productivity by coordinating the daily production activities of assigned
team. Duties include motivating team, meeting production goals and
quality standards, maintaining plant housekeeping, adhering to safety
guidelines. Requirements: 3 - 5 years experience in aggregate or
manufacturing industry. Knowledge of aggregate testing methods and
specifications preferred.

Plant Maintenance Mechanics – Repair and maintain aggregate

processing equipment. Requirements: 2-3 years maintenance
experience, welding skills preferred.

Equipment Operator - Operate dragline, front-end loader, excavator,

haul unit, or other mobile equipment in a safe and efficient manner;
perform equipment inspection and preventative maintenance.
Requirements: 2-3 years heavy equipment experience.

scrapbooking got its start,
