11. Define the terms adsorbent and adsorbate giving suitable examples.
Adsorbent: The solid that takes up a gas or a solute from the solution is called adsorbent.
Eg. Adsorption of H2 on Ni.
Adsorbent: H2 (gas)
Adsorbate: Ni (solid)
Adsorbate: The substance which is held on the surface of the solid is called adsorbate.
PART B
1. Derive an expression for Langmuirs adsorption isotherm . Show that at normal pressure
Langmuirs adsorption isotherm becomes identical with Freundlichs adsorption isotherm.
2. Explain the role of adsorbents in pollution abatement.
3. Explain the role of adsorbents in catalysis? Give examples.
4. Distinguish between physisorption and chemisorption.
5. What are the factors that influence the adsorption of gases on solids? Discuss in detail.
Unit IV
Non- Conventional Energy Sources
PART A
1. Define nuclear fission. Give an example.
It is defined as the process of splitting of heavier nucleus into two or more smaller nuclei
with simultaneous liberation of large amount of energy.
Eg. U92235 + n01 [U92236] Ba56140 + Kr3693 + 3n01
(iv)Since all the constituents of the battery are solids, there is no risk of leakage from the
battery.
(v)This battery can be made in a variety of sizes and shapes.
6. What is nuclear chain reaction?
A fission reaction, where the neutrons from the previous step continue to propagate and
repeat the reaction is called nuclear chain reaction.

PART B
Give an account of Light water nuclear reactor with neat diagram.
Give an account of H2-O2 fuel cell.
Write a brief note on Lead-Acid storage cell.
Give an account of
(i)Ni-Cd battery
(ii)Lithium battery
