AFRICAN

LEADERSHIP
FORUM 2015
MOVING TOWARDS AN INTEGRATED AFRICA:
WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE?
Serena Hotel, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Thursday 30th July, 2015

Integration is critical to the transformation and sustainable development of Africa. An

integrated continent has been the goal of African countries since the attainment of
independence more than 50 years ago. Arguments for speeding up the integration process
have been advanced by many including political leaders, economists, and think-tanks. It
is generally agreed that integration would be politically and economically beneficial for
Africa. However, Africans must learn to live together, communicate and rely on each other,
and establish laws and institutions, rites and rituals for that purpose. The key challenge
therefore is to find a way to make this vision a reality. This must be grounded in African
realities and guided by pragmatism. For Africa, this is not only a continental challenge, but
also a national challenge of creating nation-states.
It is against this backdrop that, UONGOZI Institute, under the auspices of the Office of the
Former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Benjamin W. Mkapa is organising
a one-day African Leadership Forum on July 30th, 2015, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
around the theme of Moving Towards an Integrated Africa: What needs to be done?

The Event
Building on the success of the inaugural dialogue in 2014 Meeting the challenges
of Africas transformation the African Leadership Forum 2015 will focus on the
leadership challenge facing Africa: How (best) to mobilise the continent, as a continent. How
can Africa start thinking and working as a continent? African leaders of today and tomorrow
can learn much from the past with regard to marshalling the continent for a common goal
(political independence and the end of apartheid). Africa now needs to identify and overcome
the obstacles to intra-African interaction, collaboration, coordination, and harmonisation so
that Africas richness can be marshalled for its growth and transformation.

Participants
The African Leadership Forum will bring together former Heads of State and/or Government,
as well as leaders from the private sector, government, civil society and academia from
across Africa. Participants will include H.E. Yoweri Museveni, President of Uganda, who
will deliver the keynote address; as well as H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of
Nigeria; H.E. Festus Mogae, former President of Botswana; H.E. Jerry Rawlings, former
President of Ghana, H.E. Hifikepunya Pohamba, former President of Namibia; and H.E.
Bakili Muluzi, former President of Malawi.
