SCHOOL MISSION
To educate students in a nurturing, Christian environment while instilling life-long
characteristics of faith, truth, honor, loyalty and pride. Gatewood Schools will provide an
educational experience that prepares students for post-secondary education and lasting success.
PHILOSOPHY
Gatewood Schools is an independent, non-profit, coeducational school dedicated to providing an
academically challenging learning environment in which a young person can grow, learn, and
find success. Since students desire to succeed not only in college, but also in life, Gatewood
strives to foster and promote the necessary life skills our students seek to be productive citizens.
We foster the development and well being of the total child as a person, scholar, citizen, and
athlete (intellectually, spiritually, physically and socially). A supportive administration and a
dedicated faculty facilitate open communication between students, teachers, and parents
ensuring a stable and supportive atmosphere that enhances self-esteem and learning. Because
each child is a different individual, Gatewood has high expectations consistent with each child's
unique capabilities in all aspects of his school experiences and encourages each to excel
wherever he/she has talent. Our school emphasizes the importance of individual responsibility
through honesty and integrity, respect for the rights of others, and proper social conduct. Our
school encompasses a strong college-preparatory program, a competent and caring faculty, and
individualized attention which molds a young person who is confident and ready for the adult
world.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
PLEASE READ!
The courses listed in the Course Offerings section of this guide reflect the general curriculum for
our High School. Listings permit each student to view the total curriculum in order to plan
his/her sequential course of study. Classes shown in the master course list may not be taught
every semester. Some are taken via Georgia Virtual School, and others are taught based upon
the number of students interested in the course.
Gatewood reserves the right to cancel a course if there is insufficient student enrollment,
insufficient faculty availability, or lack of instructional space. If a course is cancelled, the
registrar and/or counseling office will notify students to make another selection.
REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS AND POLICIES
1. REVIEW the GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS for the Gatewood Schools diploma and the
schedule examples in this guide.
2. READ and STUDY all of the COURSE OFFERINGS. Discuss with your parents the
requirements, your specific academic needs and interests, and your possible college/career
goals.
3. Please read and have your parents read the following statements regarding selection of upper
level classes (Honors, AP, Dual Enrollment):
COURSE POLICY
Gatewood Schools reserves the right to place students in a course or courses when first choice
requests cannot be honored or when the students previous achievement and learning
characteristics suggest a specific level. The final placement decision is based on the students
mastery of basic skills, previous achievement, teacher recommendation, and level of maturity.
Honors and Advanced Placement class numbers are capped and cannot be exceeded. Students
must have demonstrated mastery of pertinent subject matter in order to be approved for
admittance into advanced classes. When not recommended and space remains available,
students may take a pretest or entrance exam to determine their suitability for the advanced
class being sought. Those failing to meet minimum scores will be placed into the proper level of
the required class(es) needed for graduation.
HONORS/ADVANCED PLACEMENT:
1. Placement of a student in an Honors or AP level course will depend upon the
recommendation of the teacher in the prerequisite class. A student interested in being
selected may discuss his/her interest with his/her current teacher or a former teacher in
that subject area. Final selection is based on the students mastery of basic skills, previous
achievement, level of maturity, and recommendation of the department.
2. Students selected for Honors/AP courses must have displayed exceptional ability and
interest in previous work. The student should be highly self-motivated and willing to
Gatewood High School Curriculum Guide - 2014-2015
Page 4
commit significant time to the course. Enrollment in previous Honors/AP courses does
not mean automatic re-enrollment into these classes in the future. Students must
continually demonstrate the ability to perform at high levels.
3. Once enrolled in an Honors/AP course, the student is expected to maintain above-average
performance as evaluated by the instructor (semester grades of B or higher) and aboveaverage interest in the subject matter. Any student not maintaining these requirements
may be removed from the class at the conclusion of the semester.
Advanced Placement students are required to take the Advanced AP Placement Examination
and/or turn in a portfolio as their spring semester final examination. The cost of the AP
standardized examination is not included in the tuition and is set by the College Board.
Courses taken off campus during the summer, including courses from The Georgia Virtual
School and any other summer school options, will not be counted in ranking/honors placement.
Gatewood Schools advises each student and his/her parents to maintain for future reference a
cumulative file which contains this guide, copies of progress reports, and letters concerning
academic or conduct standing. This is a duplicate of those retained by the High School
Guidance Office.
