Renewable Energy - 6 ECTS

Exam Material 2014-2015

Below, the material to be studied for the exam Renewable Energy is given. However,
it is explicitly stated here that everything that has been told in the lectures by the
different lecturers (and about which there may be no explicit texts) is part of the exam
material. The following golden rule holds: those who know what has been told
in the lectures know what the instructors consider as being important.
The relevant course material, to which is referred to hereunder, is present on the
TOLEDO website.

1.- PPT slides and texts provided

1.1 Part W. Dhaeseleer (own lectures and responsible for guest lectures)
Introduction (WDH)
- Introductory Material "Renewable Energy" (blue ppt slides
"Renew Intro H04C1A WDH_2015.ppt"): TBS
The other documents are "for your information". This is not mandatory reading
material, but glancing through them might be interesting...
Thermal solar energy
- Ppt HERN_Solar Thermal Energy_WDH_2015.ppt TBS
- Additional info on absorbers: OR (figures should be understood)
- Rapport Thermische Zonnecollectoren (in Dutch): FYI not study material
since in Dutch (SK)
Concentrated Solar Power (CSP)
- Ppt Concentrated Solar Power_WDH_2015.pptx TBS
- Document EUREL_Concentrated Solar Power_WDH TBS
- Other documents on TOLEDO: selective OR, careful reading of certain parts to
well understand the power point presentation must well understand figures in
PPT (figures refer to these documents). Some parts of these documents, near
the figures used in the PPT, are to be studied. In any case: Report EASAC CSP
( 3 and 4, pp 7 15 TBS, 8 R)
Biomass (WDH)
- Ppt Biomass_HERN_2015_WDH.ppt: TBS
- Chapter 4 Bioenergy Boyle: OR
- IEA Technology Roadmap "Bioenergy for Heat and Power": FYI
- Rapport Biomassa HERN-REG (in Dutch): FYI not study material since in
Dutch (SK)
Biofuels (Lecture Luc Pelkmans)
- Slide show: 20150324_presentationBiofuels_Pelkmans_KUL.pdf TBS
- IEA Technology Roadmap "Biofuels for Transport"": FYI
Geothermal Energy (Lecture W. Dhaeseleer based on slides Danil Walraven)

- Slide show: Geothermal Energy.pdf or pptx TBS

- Parts from scans TBS, see file StudyMaterialGeothermalEnergy 2013-2014.pdf
also applicable for 2014-2015.
Hydrogen & Fuel Cells

Ppt 1. Hydrogen from RES_May 08 2015 TBS

Ppt 1a FYI
Ppt 2. Fuel Cells May 08 2015 TBS (For translation from Dutch in Table, see
notes at bottom of slide in non-slide show mode.)
Pdf 2a. Fuel Cells Extended..pdf FYI
Pdf 3. Power to Gas (P2G)_May 08 2015 TBS except those slides mentioned in
class
Document Renew H2 Turner OR
Doctoraat Dries Haeseldonckx (PhD Thesis Dries Haeseldonckx)
Chapter 2: TBS
Chapter 3: 3.1 R, 3.2 TBS, 3.3 SK, 3.4 OR, remainder FYI

In summary, what must be known is the following:

- Global status of PV-deployment
- Basic physics of a solar cell
- Equivalent scheme of a solar cell including the physical meaning of dark
current diode and the current source in the equivalent scheme
- Temperature dependence of short-circuit current, open-circuit voltage, fill
factor and efficiency
- Basic factors determining the efficiency of a photovoltaic device
- The different PV-technologies and their performance (both for best laboratory
cells and industrially manufactured photovoltaic devices)
- The process to make a Si solar cell (also linked to the visit of the S-line in
imec)
- Influence of turbidity of the solar illumination
- Difference between diffuse and direct radiation and the link with turbidity
- PV systems and the maximum power point tracking algorithms
- Which factors influence the MPP-tracking (where can it go wrong?)
