Bermans Bits
Incessantly scouring the universe (and my back yard) for the
weird, the wacky, and the
thoughtful so you dont have to.

Hey, Happy Anniversary... to me!

I have completed just over one
year at my new job (not so new
anymore), and I still havent been
fired yet maybe I know too
much (or maybe its those pictures I have and threatened to
release). Seriously, what a difference from my past career! We all
work together, no one is better
than anyone else, and we watch
out for each other. There are no
oversized bullies or backstabbers
or walking on egg shells around
(way around) anyone. (Yes, I am
passive aggressive, which is way
better than being a malignant narcissistic bully any day).

The hoo-ha over Donald Trumps

comments about Mexico (and
John McCain) is a good thing; a
great thing actually! Really!
Unlike most politicians, he says
what he believes, like it or not,
true or not. Its what he genuinely
believes, and that lets voters
judge him on his stated ideas.
The vanilla PC words spewing

forth from most politicians are

unadulterated hooey! Glittering
generalities! Tell us your truth
who you really are and how you
are going to do what you say you
will do - and let the chips fall
where they may (and our votes)!
(Using The Donald as an example, picture two people are talking. One says hes a complete
[fill in nasty word here]! The
other sees him as the second
coming, a breath of fresh air!
Whos right? Is it possible they
both are?)

The neat thing about being a

regular at a restaurant is that
when changes are made, one
notices and can offer feedback. I
believe people want consistency
so that when they order something, they know what they are
getting. For example, I was able
to discern whether the day or
evening cook made the hot and
sour soup at HKG (both great but
subtly different). When batter
and seasonings were changed on
local chicken tenders, I knew it
right away. And when tomato
wedges were changed to small
slices in a salad, again I noticed
(especially after a raise in price).

Northcountry News Picture Of The Week

I like taking some of the quizzes

on Facebook (as ridiculous as
many are, they make me feel
smart [I do know my grammar
and 50s and 60s music]). Ravenonline recently offered a challenging IQ test. The real test
came, however, after the 20minute, 60-question test. After
investing the time, it seems to
unlock my results it would have
cost me $3. Great marketing, but
I will never know how I scored
because I dont like getting suckered.

I had an epiphany (no, I didnt

get any on me). I am way out of
touch, old school (but that may
not be a bad thing). I was going
through my email, and it hit me
that virtually no one communicates through email any more. I
get plenty, but there are few, if
any, personal communications
they are all newsletters, jokes,
quotes, etc. There are times I am
not instantly accessible as it
seems most other people are. I
have a land line at home and at
work but nothing in between. If
someone wants to reach me, they
have to call and leave a message.
I dont text. As much as I use it,
my flip phone costs me about $10
a month. My perception of what
others are spending on phones
makes it understandable why its
so hard for so many to have
enough to spend on other necessities.
So you dont think my life is too
perfect, among my most important possessions are my name and
reputation. I work hard to maintain both. When either or both are
dishonored, I dont take it well.

that I have been waiting for an
apology for something that happened. I am starting to think I
wont be getting one. While there
is a significant back story spanning nearly 30 years, all you need
to know is I was attacked (verbally) and ordered off a property,
which is no big deal considering
the source, but it was in front of
my family and friends, which is
inexcusable. More next time on
what happened and why I left
without protest.

Allen, arrested in England, on
suspicion of possessing drugs
with intent to sell, relied on a
fairly common strategy: As officers burst into the room, he swal-

lowed the evidence. As in the

other cases, police decided to
wait for nature to take its course
in order to recover the suspected
drugs. Unlike in the other cases,
Allen managed to hold out, with
no, uh, movement (if you know
what I mean) for 23 days but
not a 24th. He was finally arrested. [East Anglican Daily Times]
LinkedIn keeps sending me suggestions of people, some of
whom are no longer with us (kind
of like some birthday reminders
on Facebook). Hel-lo....

And if you walk a couple of

Its neighbor in the far north

When Atticus and I were like

the foursome who came north
last weekend, and lived in
Massachusetts and traveled to
hike, we came north with four
choices in mind. In optimal
weather, wed get above treeline. In less than optimal, but
still safe enough to climb, wed
hike another mountain where
the views were not the high
point of the experience. The
third choice was to hike to
waterfalls like Bridal Veil Falls
or Champney Falls. And the
fourth, well the fourth was just
to hang out in the White
Mountains and read a book in
the cabin or have breakfast at
Pollys Pancake Parlor or lunch
at Half Baked and Fully

Drop down below four thousand feet, and your options

multiply. But more important
than smaller peaks on rainy
days, take advantage of waterfall hikes, or pond and lake
hikes. A favorite is hiking out to

Native American Dig To End Soon In Holderness___________________________________________________

Scheduled to end by July 31,
archaeological students have
been hard at work here uncovering bits and pieces of what was
left behind from Native
American occupancy, dating
from as long ago as 4,000 years.

Under the watchful eye of state

archeologist
Dr.
Richard
Boisvert, two dozen students
have been at work uncovering
artifacts while looking for other
clues to those who occupied the
area around the Squam River that
many years ago.

In what the chief investigating

archeologist of the day described
back in 2001, as ...one of the

largest known pre-European contact sites in the state of New

Hampshire. Dr. Robert Goodby
was referring to artifacts dating
back to a far earlier time recovered from alongside Davison's
Brook in a field owned by the
Squam Lake Natural Science
Center. This investigation came
about due to the relocation of
state Route 113, construction of
an improved state boat launch
ramp, an adjacent parking lot and
excavation for a new visitor's
center and accompanying sewage
leach field. Under Sec. 106 of the
National Historic Preservation
Act (P.L. 89-665) an immediate
stop to any federally-funded
project where Native remains are

found was required. Dr. Goodby

spoke of this last week at the
Lake Winnipesaukee Museum in
Weirs Beach.

Davison's Brook, where it flows

into the river between the two
Squam Lakes, was an ideal location for Natives long before
white settlers arrived at a time
well before there was a NH. A
southern exposure surrounded by
hillsides and with ample game
and fish, it sustained a seasonal
population of Natives. Some
would say the very first summer
folks. Today's dig is not that far
from this earlier discovery. It is
thought that Natives, most likely
Western
Abenaki-speaking

Pennacook
tribesmen
and
women, occupied substantial
portions of what make up today's
lakeside village here.

Today's exploration is being held

under a program called SCRAP
State Conservation and Rescue
Archaeology Program where
students at all levels can earn college credits for their work. The
Holderness Historical Society
has taken out a membership as
have others. At sometime in the
future Dr. Boisvert will present
their findings to the Society.

ered. And two weeks ago investigators dug up fragments of early

pottery indicating the use of lakeside clays. In the past this site has
yielded what archaeologists refer
to as a pecked and polished stone
gouge, a stoneEvery find is carefully measured, photographed,
related to other finds and coordinated through GPS coordinates.
It is critical to know just where
they were found. Pits yielding
nothing are also very important
for they tell archaeologists where
no activity took place.

Rest assured that two years

from now when the next budget
is formulated there will be millions upon millions more needed for these programs that don't
work. When I voted last year for
the Red, Right, Republicans I
was expecting less government
and less spending. Increase in
state employee pay increases
the state retirement requirements that tax payers pick up
the tab on.

Increasing programs that don't

work result in more administrative requirements, in other
words more state employees.
What happened to the less government / less spending? I
could have voted for the Blue
Democrats, at least I know
what to expect from them, the
same results.

In 2016, I think I'll just skip the

voting for state Reps and
Senators. and just vote for the
Presidential race, and I'll play
the "Trump" card, at least the
"Donald" will not be manipulated by the main stream political team.

Annual Blessing Of
The Animals In
North Woodstock
Slated____________

September 28, Sunday at 9 am,

the Episcopal Church of the
Messiah will have its 14th
Annual Blessing of the
Animals. This tradition, begun
to commemorate the feast of St.
Francis of Assisi, allows for
people to bring their pets to
church for a blessing.

The hour long service includes

music, readings, and congregational participation, and ends
with each animal being blessed.
In the past, people have brought
cats, dogs, goats, ferrets, frogs,
turtles, and a hamster to be
blessed. We are also pleased
that the Clark family brings at
least one bear every year.
Everyone goes outside to see
the bear, in a truck, to be
blessed. Refreshments are
served at the end of the service.

The Church of the Messiah frequently gives money to the

Heifer Fund, which supports
the Millennium Development
Goals by supplying people with
the means to feed themselves
and raise money. A collection
will be taken at the service
which will be given to the
Heifer Project.

The church is located in North

Woodstock,
behind
the
Woodstock Inn, on School
Street. It is just off of Route 3.
We ask that all pets be confined
by leash or some other comfortable method. Everyone is welcome to come enjoy this informal celebratory service.

town, perhaps our county.
Repeated lightning strikes lit up
the night as if it were afternoon,
while thunder drowned out what

Public Hearing Set For Proposed 2016 Fishing Rules________

A public hearing on proposed
New Hampshire freshwater fishing rule changes for 2016 will be
held at 6:00 PM on Wednesday,
August 5, 2015, at the N.H. Fish
and Game Department, 11 Hazen
Drive, Concord, N.H.

Fish and Game Department is

proposing to adopt various
amendments to rules regarding
freshwater fishing; the changes
would become effective January
1, 2016.
The proposed rules would:
Clarify that there are no limits
on white suckers or rock bass;
Change the rules for Caldwell
Pond in Alstead and Hogback
Pond in Greenfield so that neither
are regulated as trout ponds;

Change the closing date to

September 30 for taking trout
from the segment of the
Androscoggin River upstream of
Errol Dam to Lake Umbagog
(currently November 30);
Re-categorize a segment of

the Contoocook River so that it is

no longer regulated as fly-fishing-only waters and so that the
trout bag limit is liberalized;
Change the rules for a segment of the Magalloway River,
the Swift Diamond River, and
Dead Diamond River so that the
closing date for taking trout is
moved to September 30 (currently November 30 in Magalloway
and October 15 in Swift and
Dead Diamond);
Change the rules for a section
of the Piscataquog River in New
Boston to remove the delayed
harvest rule for trout;

Change the rules for the

Connecticut River above the
Route 114 bridge to no-take, artificial lures and flies only prior to
the fourth Saturday in April;
Alter bag limits on MaineNew Hampshire interstate waters
from applying to combined trout
species to applying to individual
trout species, and adjust limits
and seasons for various other

gamefish species; and

Add two species to the trophy
fish program.

In addition, the proposed rules

would require that any invertebrates used for freshwater fishing
bait be imported only from a
zebra mussel-free source.

The complete rulemaking notice,

with original and proposed rule
language for these proposals, can

Inspiring Words for You!

Dear Friends, Psalm 150:6 says, Let

everything that breathes sing praises
to the LORD! Praise the LORD! It is this time of
year beginning in the spring, when I am
standing in the midst of all of God's creation,
that I think of this psalm. The beautiful lakes,
the trees, flowers, birds, animals all just come
alive! At this time of year it is very easy to say
those very words. "LET EVERYTHING THAT
HAS BREATH PRAISE THE LORD! Read the
Word, it will feed your soul.
God bless you all.

help, fledglings are extremely
vulnerable. Which brings me
back to the baby ruffed grouse.
Had I done the right thing when
I did nothing at all? I had,
according to Eisenhauer.
Between mid-May and late
September, VINS receives hundreds of calls from people fretting about a baby bird they have
found on the ground. We
strongly encourage folks not to
disturb the fledgling bird, for
constant interference will discourage the parents from coming to it, said Eisenhauer.
Best to watch from a distance
and let the parent do its job.
The day after my brief
encounter with the young
grouse, I was walking very near
where I had spotted it. As I
crested a low knoll, several
baby ruffed grouse skittered
into the woods. Their mother
appeared, flapped her wings,
squawked, and frantically
paced. I hurried away to ease
her distress, and as I looked
back, she slipped into the thicket, following her chicks.
