Living In Spain
I dont need a Funeral Plan!
These are the thoughts of the vast majority of
UK citizens who live more than four weeks a
year here in Spain. Unfortunately the reality
is quite a bit different. Tens of thousands of
people who are Living La Dolce Vita have
planned for lifes final event Why? I hear
you ask.
Let me explain.
Stress
At such a painful and distressing time people
would rather spare their loved ones the
potential complications of arranging a funeral
in another country. Language difficulties and
different procedures from the UK can create
additional worries.
Spanish Customs
Funerals here in Spain generally take place
within 24 hours; quite a difference from back
home in the UK. This creates complications
for many reasons, one of which is - how are
my family and friends going to get here to pay
their respects?
Finances
Funerals can cost in excess of 4,900 and
usually have to be paid in full prior to the
service going ahead. Accessing such a large
amount of money quickly can be problematic.
Inflation
Age or Health
There are insurance policies that do not cover
people over a certain age or with particular
health issues.
Final wishes
Many people have specific requests for when
the inevitable happens. How can they be sure
that their wishes will be carried out?

Cherries
My husband once tried to make Cherry
Brandy. He was sure you just put cherries
in a jar with brandy and let them ferment?
He did this with several jars and put them
into the fridge. When I asked him when
they would be ready he said he would just
know! We moved twice and took the cherry
brandy mix with us, the second time to
Spain, but still he said it wasnt ready.
Finally some 3 years later he announced
now was the time to try the Brandy but
when we opened the jar.. Well lets
just say it was undrinkable. Luckily I found
a very good recipe (below) which didnt
include brandy or a fridge!
Buen Apetito
Cherry Brandy
1kg cherries
1litre vodka
300gm sugar
Sterilised jars
Rinse the cherries well, cut off the stalks
leaving 1cm still on the cherry, (that way
the brandy will keep longer as the cherries
stay nice and firm). Layer the cherries
with the sugar, pour over the alcohol and
close the jar. Put jars in a dark place at
room temperature and shake every day
for a week. Forget about the cherries until
Christmas!
Cherry Pie
450gm fresh cherries
2 eggs
225ml evaporated milk
225g caster sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
tsp ground ginger
tsp ground nutmeg
50gm raisins
Pastry Case (short crust pastry is best but
any of your choice)

The name Cehegn is sometimes connected by Spanish historians with that of the
Zenaga, Senhaja or Senajeli, a North African tribe, which invaded Spain in the 11th
century. The whole of this territory is layer
upon layer of all the various cultures that
established themselves here, the first settlers going back to 2400 BC. Reconquered
by Alphonse VI with 1,000 horsemen and
11,000 infantrymen, Cehegn is one vast
hilltop monument with houses built into the
hillside.
Cave paintings at Pea Rubia, a few kilometres outside the town, attest to the area
being settled during pre-historic times. The
town of Begastri, now abandoned, was settled during the later Bronze Age and was an
important town during the time that the region was occupied by the Romans and the
Visigoths. With the arrival of the Moors, the
town centre shifted to its present location at
Cehegn. Remains of the Moorish city walls
can still be seen, for example at the Puerta
de Caravaca. The Archaeological Museum
can also be found in the Old Town, where
the exhibition include also small fragment
of Attic red-figured pottery dated to the 4th
century BC.
Many conquistadores returned from South
America with their riches and built large manorial houses in the Old Town. Cehegn Old
Town has been revitalised recently by an influx of foreign (mainly British) buyers, who
have renovated many of the older properties
that were falling into disrepair.
Before it was given the name Cehegn, the
town was called Bigastro and began to be
an episcopal site when the Bishop of Cartagena fled there after the Visigothic king Suintila (c. 588 633/635) destroyed the city.
It remained a bishopric until Bigastro in its
turn was destroyed by Arabs at the end of
the 7th century. No longer a residential diocese, Bigastro is today listed by the Catholic
Church as a titular site. The Archaeological
Site of Begastri is opened for visitors on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am-2pm. You
will be able to see a video presentation followed by a guided tour to see the remains of
the Iberian culture before the IV century BC.
Cehegn Highlights In August
Summer Activities

town and here are a few.

From 14th - 16th of August we celebrate Fiestas in the district of El Chaparral and from

Yecla is a
small
town
in the very
North East of
Murcia with
a population
of
around
35,000. Like
so
many
such towns,
it can claim
a long and
diverse history.
The
earliest finds
of human activity in the
area
come
from the Palaeolithic with flint tools found dating back
around 30,000 years. Then, there are renowned cave paintings at locations in and
around Monte Arab to the 6th to 2nd centuries BC. In addition, around this time,
important settlements were established in
the area by the Iberian people at places
such as El Pupillo, El Cerro del Castillo and
El Cerro de los Santos, with the last named
boasting a significant sanctuary.
The area was also important in Roman
times. The rural villa settlement of Los Torrejones appears to have been an administrative centre for a wide local area. There
is then something of a gap, but by the end
of the 11th Century, at the time of Arab control of this part of Spain, there appears to
have been a small population with a castle
at Yakka. In the Middle Ages, after the
Christian takeover in 1243, the town seems
generally to have prospered and grown until setbacks in the 16th Century with wars,
plague and outmigration. However, the
18th Century saw significant expansion of
the urban area with the population reaching around 10,000 people. Growth continued in the second half of the 19th Century
with agricultural development mainly based
upon viticulture. Finally, in the last century, there was an important growth
of furniture-making for which Yecla is
now well known.
To appreciate Yeclas
early
history, you can
do no better
than spend
an hour or

I may regret telling you all about my favourite
new eating place, given that I plan to become
a regular on the few summer nights I can
escape holiday guests and work, but if you
see me there please do stop and say hello.
At the end of the summer, I will miss
the convenience of having a super bar &
restaurant at the end of my street, but on
the positive side, the cove will be MY private
beach again - at least until next June!
You can find the Medusa Chula on the main
road from Puerto de Mazarrn to Isla Plana

the right hand side of the road BEFORE you
get to Isla Plana village and just after the
Cuevas de Agua on the E22.

What is Gearing?
What is Leverage?
Phrases often used, but rarely explained...
As promised last month, a much easier
read this time round about Gearing and
Leverage. In the finance world we are
all too guilty of descending into jargon or
talking and writing assuming everyone
knows what we are talking about and so
we thought it worth, for a start, explaining
these two concepts.
Gearing is when a company borrows money
to allow them to invest in something that will
make them a profit. The hope is that the
investment will have a large return, meaning
the cost of the loan is easily covered and
there is lots of additional profit for the
company and shareholders.
Investment Trusts do this, but Unit Trusts
and Open Ended Investment Companies
can only take on very small loans and so
tend not to. The risk is that the investment
does not work and your company ends up
paying both the interest and the loan. If
an opportunity comes along that is too good
to miss, Gearing allows a company to take
part without having to sell extra shares,
owned assets or affect other parts of their
normal trading business.
Leverage refers to the use of debt to acquire

Dear Editor
I just wanted to write to say thank you to
Eileen at Viages Dragontours at Camposol
for looking after us all so well on the trip I
joined to Tabarca Island in June. It was very
well organized and we received some great
information on the history of the island and
other general information such as plankton in
the sea surrounding the island. It was very
good value and I would recommend this trip.
Its a picturesque, peaceful traffic-free haven
with beautiful clear sea water and numerous
restaurants.

Many of the activities undertaken are outdoors and all require planning, organising and
note taking. With this in mind, plus the ever-increasing financial burden on parents to
provide schoolchildren with all the stationery
necessary for school, the LAGS committee,
along with Emma, decided to provide books,
paper, pencils pens satchels etc to assist with
these social and school activities.

Preparations for LAGS Charity Day 2015
are now almost complete and with the aid of
their wonderfully generous sponsors, particularly Luz del Sol and Kia Cars, they are looking to eclipse last years phenomenal feats

to be a great success. The 91 people who
attended the event enjoyed excellent food,
copious drinks, super service and great
entertainment supplied by Martin Ross who
said he had thoroughly enjoyed the evening
as well. Nobody wanted to go home when
the buses turned up and we were envious of
the people who had decided to stay the night.

Where am I?
Summertime can be hard on everyone,
with the heat and the holiday mentality
combining to produce some conversations
that would rival one of my dear old fathers
favourites, the Abbott and Costello dialogue
of Whos on First Base?? Older readers will
immediately recognise that catchphrase,
but it sums up the sort of circular dialogue
I have with many potential holiday clients.
The conversation goes something like this:
Liz Edmiston, OwnersAway Rentals.
Hello, I have seen your property and
I would like to know if it is available this
summer.
Which property are you referring to? We
are a rental agency.
Oh, I dont know. Is it free?
If you can tell me which property you are
interested in, Ill be happy to check for
you.
Well I dont know where it is.
Describe the house.
Im not at the house..
Which area is it in?
I dont know. My friend was passing it and
gave me your number to call.
OK if we can narrow it down a bit..
and so begins the process of 20 questions
to find out where this property is which
then ends 9 times out of 10 with the
unfortunate outcome of Aaaahhh , THAT
apartment.. no sorry its booked! Believe
it or not I can now have this conversation
in 3 languages!!

Anti-bullfighting
Feelings have been running high as BullRuns are axed from fiesta programmes. New
left-of-the-centre local councils and regional
governments are systematically scrapping
Bull-Fights and Bull-Running in their towns,
with some putting the decision out to
referendum first.
Many livestock breeders have already signed
contracts to host bull-related events at local
fiestas, many of which will not go ahead and,
in many other cases, will be the last time they
do.
Many towns and villages, including Moratalla
in Northwest Murcia, say it was too late to
call off this years on-street Bull-Running,
but will hold a referendum ahead of next
years festivals. Other towns and cities have
withdrawn council grants for bull-related
events and will scrap them altogether in 2017.
Pro-animal political party PACMA says If
Spain is trying to build a society based
upon ethics and justice, bull-related events
should not only cease to be financed, but
be banned altogether. They want to see far
harsher penalties for dumping, neglecting or
ill-treating pets and an end to shooting, or
hunting on foot with hounds, but the latter
could be more difficult since hunters do this
for a living by selling the meat, or using it to
feed themselves.
Jellyfish
A huge smack of jellyfish spanning most of
the Costa del Sol led to beaches being closed
and at least 200 bathers being stung.
Game of Thrones
Auditions for extras have already been held in
Almera with over 10,000 people queuing up.
The Alcazaba, or Mediaeval Moorish fortress
in Almera will be used as a venue for several
scenes in the sixth season along with Girona
and Pescola in Castelln Province, as well as
in the Santa Florentina Castle in Barcelona,
the Zafra Castle in Guadalajara and the
Bardenas Reales nature reserve in Navarra.
Part of the fifth series was filmed in and
around the Alczar, or Arab fortress in Sevilla
and local authorities say it brought a massive
economic boost to the city. Season five of
the HBO serial finished in June and filming of
season six will start this month. Based upon
the fantasy novel series Song of Fire and Ice
by George R R Martin, Game of Thrones takes
its names, settings, costumes and plot from
1,000 years of European Medieval history.
Pigeons Fed Contraceptives
A town in Catalunya is feeding contraceptive
pills to pigeons to stop them breeding
uncontrollably and covering cars and buildings
with droppings.
In Badia del Valls, Barcelona, authorities
are stocking up automatic bird-feeders with
maize grains soaked in Nicarbazine, so that
within four or five years the pigeon population
will have decreased by about 80%. The
doctored food, Ovistop, is carefully dosed out
to ensure pigeons consume 10 grams a day
of the contraceptive drug. They will only be
given drugged food until December and then
again from next July, because the second half
of the year is when most pigeon reproduction
takes place.
Pigeons pair off in the same way as
heterosexual humans and the female lays two
eggs per cycle. The birds are sexually mature
at two months and are able to produce
grandchildren for the original pigeon pair.
This means a married couple of pigeons can
effectively produce 48 descendants a year.
El Gordo
Christmas may be an unwelcome word for
those enjoying the Spanish summer sunshine,
but the famous El Gordo Christmas lottery is
on sale already, even though it is not drawn
until the night of December 22.
Their aim is to increase its prize pot by
persuading holidaymakers to buy a dcimo,
or 10th of a ticket, which costs 20.
Over 10,400 points of sale have opened
across Spain, but mostly in coastal areas and
other towns popular with tourists. El Gordo
will hand out 640 million in prize money,
with the winning ticket netting 4m.
