Richfield group seeks

to intervene in Scenic Pit lawsuit
A Richfield citizens group opposed to
installation of clean fill at the site of a former quarry near Scenic Road are seeking
to intervene a lawsuit between the entity
seeking to fill the site and the village of
Richfield.
Scenic Pit LLC sought a temporary
restraining order against the village June
5 but it was denied by Washington
County Circuit Judge Andrew Gonring.
Scenic Pit LLC received state approvals for
clean fill to be placed at the location and
has argued that it does not need village
approvals on any items related to the project. A motion to address the request for a
temporary injunction is scheduled for
Sept. 1.
An organization called Richfield

Residents Against Dump LLC (RRAD) filed

an intervenor petition on July 24.
"RRAD, and its members, have a significant interest in maintaining the residential character of the neighborhood surrounding the subject property and preventing any nuisance from occurring on
the subject property," Alan Marcuvitz, an
attorney for the RRAD, said in the July 24
filing. "Not only would the peaceful enjoyment of the residential use of surrounding
property be negatively impacted by the
presence of a dump, but the property values of surrounding land owned by RRAD
members would also decrease.
In the filing, Marcuvitz stated the inter-

Dana Zoulek of Scenic Pit

LLC speaks in favor of a
request by the entity during
the Richfield Village Board
meeting in June. A group of

Celebrating 30 years in business, All

American Window & Door Co. owners
Ben and Terri Lodwick look back on three
successful decades in the community without forgetting their humble beginnings.
"We started at our kitchen table and
we were there for a number of years," said
Terri in a phone interview with the Express
News. "We purchased our property (located at N112 W14880 Mequon Road,
Germantown) in 1992 and we have been
here ever since."
Terri said she and her husband always
knew they would take the route they did as
they had both grown up in families that
owned businesses, and because Ben was
familiar with windows, doors and siding,
"the choice was clear," said Terri.
Since then the couple has been on an
exciting business path that has earned
them many awards, including the 2005
Germantown Business of the Year recognition and 2009 Better Business Bureau
Torch Award for Ethics and Integrity.
"The products we offer are Energy Starrated and third-party tested for validation,
so it is not just me saying our windows are
awesome, a third party is saying our windows are awesome," Terri noted with a
laugh. "We have a very open and honest
relationship with our manufacturers and
people who understand quality understand who we are."
However, despite these accolades, the
Lodwicks greatest sense of accomplishment has come from the strong ties they

have established in the village. They have

been involved in many community projects,
including ones with the library and police
and fire departments. The Lodwicks were
part of the group that helped build the villages Survive Alive House and they led
Fourth of July festivities with the Kiwanis
Club in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
"Being able to give back to our hometown has been such a joy, and we have
met so many great people along the way,"
said Terri, who raised her children in the
community as well.
With nine children, six of whom work
fulltime for the business, the Lodwicks have
never worried about keeping their family
legacy alive.
"I am not surprised we made it to 30
years because that was always our goal
and this has been our career and our life,"
she said. "We set a strong foundation from
the beginning."
As the times have evolved, the
Lodwicks have made a point to stay ahead
of the learning curve.
"So much has changed since we started-projects, energy efficiency, technology,
the way we educate our consumers," she
said. "We make sure to keep learning and
attending seminars and being flexible to
those changes."
To mark their milestone anniversary,
American Window & Door Co. will have a
month-long celebration at their store in
August, offering "awesome specials, raffles, open houses and great deals," said
Terri. "We want to show our appreciation

get their attention. He is in no pain, requires no special care, and has a normal
life expectancy. He has no idea that he is "different." Since most people don't
know about Vestibular Disease, dogs or cats like Dexter aren't always given a

State agency warns Germantown district on Badger exam opt outs

The Germantown School District has
been contacted by the state Department
of Public Instruction regarding the number
of students who opted out of the Badger
Exam.
The tests were administered to students statewide in grades 3 to 8. The
Germantown School Board approved a
request Feb. 23 to create a special notice
to parents informing them that they can
opt their children out of the tests.
We are required to provide the tests,

but parents have the ability to opt out,

Superintendent Jeff Holmes said at the
Feb. 23 meeting.
The DPI has sent a letter to the district
earlier this summer noting that 81 percent
of students opted out of the exam.
"State law allows parents to opt their
children out of these assessments; there is
no such opt out provision in federal law.
Evidence indicates the Germantown
School District actively solicited or encouraged parents to opt their children out of

assessments, in clear violation of the federal law requiring assessments," the

agency stated in the letter. "Either district
policy, active communication with parents, or both, resulted in 81 percent of students opting out of the Badger assessment. These actions jeopardize significant
federal funding for the Germantown
School District and for all other school districts in the state."
In response to recent letter from the
state agency about the number of students

who opted out of the exam, Holmes told

the School Board July 27 that he followed
up with Department of Public Instruction
(DPI) staff and the agency. The matter will
be discussed at the Aug. 10 School Board
meeting and Holmes indicated he hoped to
meet with DPI officials before then.
"I believe that we are going to have to
come to terms with DPI in regard to helping the Germantown School District maintain local control," Holmes told the board.

Germantown chief: Motorists must yield for emergency vehicles

Germantown Police Chief Peter Hoell

motorists to yield for emergency vehicles
following a situation during a police chase

In post on the department's Facebook
page, Hoell said that around 8:30 a.m.

and the shift commander behind me, on

Mequon Road, lights and sirens approaching our eastern border. All traffic was yielding to the right; everyone was doing a
great job of yielding to emergency vehicles,"he stated.
Hoell stated that as he was approaching 124th Street there was a semi-tractor
trailer to his left that was pulled over to the
right side of the road.
"Within less than seconds, a pickup
truck pulled out from behind the semi,
crossed the double yellow lines and
entered my lane of travel. I remember seeing the pickup in front of me, snapping my
steering wheel to the right, and just missing
a head on collision. I continued on and

shortly thereafter the chase went back into

Milwaukee," Hoell stated.
Hoell said that afterwards, the thought
started to set in of what would have happened if hadn't snapped his steering wheel
in time to avoid a collision. He then reminded motorists that when they see emergency
lights, they need to pull over.
"If you see one squad, there may be
more following. Nothing is so important
than to risk your life to get there a couple
minutes sooner," Hoell stated. "Given the
dynamics of what I experienced this morning, if we would have crashed, we would
not have survived. We would have devastated two families and friends.

an early stage" and further indicated the
RRAD "is prepared to join the village in
opposition to that already-filed motion, but
does not request a change in the court's
schedule.
Marcuvitz further stated that RRAD
members have an interest in how the for-

mer quarry site is developed and that the

RRAD is not represented by the village and
its zoning administrator.
"The village and its administrator, Jim

Scleroderma walk Aug. 16

The 7th Annual "Stepping Out to Cure
Scleroderma" walk in Germantown, will be
held on Sunday, Aug. 16.
This annual walk raises money for the
Scleroderma
Foundation,
Greater
Chicago Chapter, which provides support,
education and research for scleroderma
patients. Scleroderma is a chronic, often
progressive, autoimmune disease in which
the immune system attacks its own body.
The disease can cause thickening and tightening of the skin. In some cases it causes
serious damage to internal organs including the heart, lungs, kidneys, esophagus
and gastrointestinal tract. These organs
may slowly harden until they become ineffective. Some treatments can help with certain symptoms, but there is still no cure for
scleroderma. The disease affects three to
four times as many women as men.
"Some friends and I started this
fundraiser six years ago after a childhood
friend had passed away from the disease
and my best friend from high school had
been diagnosed," said Michele Fuchs,

Senior Account Executive for Entercom

Milwaukee and Stepping Out to Cure
Scleroderma committee member. "Were
very pleased with the community support
weve received. Last year was our best
year ever with 400 walkers and were hoping to get even more people to the walk
this year!"
The walk will take place at Kinderberg
Park, N104W14942 Donges Bay Road,
Germantown. Registration will start at 7:30
a.m. and the walk will begin at 9:00 a.m.
The event will take place rain or shine. The
cost is $20 per walker. Children under 12
walk for free. The day includes food, music,
t-shirts, raffle prizes and activities for families. Dogs are welcome. Register for the1or
3-mile
walk
online
at
scleroderma.org/steppingoutgermantown.
Advanced online registration is recommended, but participants may also register
in person the day of the walk. For more
information or to request a Stepping Out to
Cure Scleroderma brochure e-mail gcchapter@scleroderma.org or call 312-660-1131.

All American Window & Door Co. will
present the money they raise through their
raffles to the EWI of Milwaukee for educational programs.
"It has been quite a journey and we
have learned so much and we have
enjoyed the rewards," Terri said. As for the
future, Terri said her family plans to "keep
learning, growing, having fun and transitioning into the next generation."

Dear Dr. Winter, I am looking for someone to fix my

smile. I worry that a basic dentist wont be able to make my
smile look like a million bucks! I LOVE smiling and
laughing and my bridge is 20 years old. It is discolored and
the teeth have always been too square looking. I have
chipped the porcelain and several dentists have tried gluing
white fillings on to the chip but they only last a week or
two! I live in a small town in Wisconsin and dont wish to
see a dentist near me. I would love your opinion. Thank
you! Ann B.
Dear Ann, I am glad you found us on your internet
searches and were impressed with our work. We do help
patients with complex dental work and perform everything
from full mouth rehabilitation to implant reconstructions.
The bridge you describe sounds like it needs to be replaced.
We will look at the status of the underlying teeth, the health
of your gums and discuss all the options that are available
to you. Bridgework is subjected to thousands of chewing
cycles and over time porcelain may chip or crack
necessitating remaking the bridge. Please come in for a
comprehensive examination and x-ray visit and we would
be happy to discuss your particular situation. We certainly
welcome anyone with old crowns, chips on their crowns or
bridges or an overall lack of satisfaction with their dental
work to call us and come in for a comprehensive
examination appointment.
Dear Dr. Winter, I recently read your article on Bulimia
on your website: www.hamptondentalassociates.com
THANK YOU for addressing such a devastating illness. I
had suffered with Bulimia for 7 years and had experienced
the thinning enamel, the sensitivity and pain that you
described. Because of your expertise and caring attitude I
had the courage to face this illness and receive the treatment
you prescribed. I couldnt be happier with my smile! I do
modeling and have now gotten back the confidence to smile
broadly in my photo shoots. Thank you again for never
judging me and offering me the best care I could hope for!
Name withheld upon request. Dr. Rick: It was my privilege
to be involved in your care!
Dear Dr. Winter, I went to a dentist that told me I need
12 crowns. I went to another dentist that put 5 pins in each
tooth in the back and told me I just need 4 crowns. Now I

am having pain in the teeth that have the pins and I saw
another dentist and he said the last dentist put the pins in
my canals! Help, what should I do and how do I know the
best treatment.
Dear Jane, judging by the fact that you required so
many pins and the fact that another dentist asked you to do
12 crowns you most likely have severe wear of your
existing teeth, short teeth, fractures of your existing teeth
or a combination of the above. Placing pins only gives us
a little help holding on to a filling and crown. When
people have complex problems we need to take x-rays to
locate the canals, evaluate your bite and come up with a
predictable solution. We invite you and our readers to call
us at 414-464-9021 to schedule your visit and please see
our website above for photos and testimonials!

Falls wins summer baseball title

By Thomas J. McKillen
Managing Editor
Menomonee Falls started fast and finished strong on the way to an 11-0 victory
over Franklin in the WIAA summer baseball
championship game at Kapco Park in
Mequon July 24.
It is the first title for Menomonee Falls,
which had a been a runner up four times.
"It's a relief. We've come close so many
times with great teams," Menomonee Falls
Coach Pat Hansen said afterward while
also mentioning several players on past
teams. "It is a little bit of a validation."
In
the
championship
game,
Menomonee Falls got three runs in the first
inning as two errors kept the inning alive.
"The start was huge, because right
when got on Franklin, we got some much
momentum," Josh Zahn said.
Hansen added that the lead to start the
game allowed his team to be more aggressive on the basepaths and also allowed
him to call for bunts to advance runners.
Menomonee Falls also scored three
runs in the second inning. With Zahn on
first base and Jerin Frey on second base,
Zach Korburger singled and advanced on
a error by the centerfielder, which allowed
Frey and Zahn to score. Kornburger then
scored on a throwing error as Menomonee
Falls held a 6-0 lead after two innings.
Franklin was on the verge of getting on
the board in the bottom of the third inning
as Mike Davis tripled with one out, but Falls
pitcher Lukas Kell recorded two strikeouts
to end the inning.

Menomonee Falls added to its total in

the sixth inning, with Zahn and Kornburger
getting on base. Matt Emmer reached base
on a fielder's choice, and scored along
with Zahn and Kornburger on two throwing
errors. Later in the inning, a double by
Myles Mayer allowed runners Boyd
Sansone and Brandon Kohnert to score.
"We never let up this game. We knew
Franklin's a good team and they could hit
their way back," Menomonee Falls third
baseman Ty Weber said. "As soon we got
those extra runs, that sealed the deal."
With Menomonee Falls leading 11-0,
Franklin needed to score two runs to take
the game into the seventh inning and avoid
having it end early under the 10-run rule.
But Menomonee Falls recorded three
straight outs to seal the win. Kell recorded
three strikeouts while allowing one walk
and five hits in the complete game win for
Menomonee Falls.
It was the second game for both teams
that day. Franklin opened the summer tournament with an 11-4 win over Plymouth
while Menomonee Falls rallied to defeat
Pewaukee 8-3. In the semifinal,
Menomonee Falls scored two runs in the
bottom of the third inning but Pewaukee
responded with three runs in the top of the
fourth inning.
Hansen later said his team lost some of
its composure to start the fourth inning of
the semifinal game against Pewaukee.

School Board
approves gas contract
The Germantown School Board
approved a contract with the Constellation
firm July 27 to provide gas for Germantown
High School and Kennedy Middle School
for the upcoming school year.
School Board member Bruce
Warnimont explained that under the contract the district would buy the same gas it
normally uses to heat the schools but
would hire someone other than WE
Energies to transport it. Warnimont said the
contract would provide the district with an
opportunity to save 35 to 50 percent on its
gas bill for the two schools.
"It's a very painless process,"
Warnimont said.
Band trip approved
The board approved a request from the
Germantown High School band to travel
to Italy for New Year's festivities during the
winter break in December 2016 and early
January 2017. There are 130 students and
13 chaperones planned for the trip. The
band will be participating in events in
Rome and Frascati, Italy. The cost of the

trip will be paid by the students.

Facility use contract approved
The board approved a facility use contract with the Germantown Recreation
Department for the next year. The contract
was approved with an amendment that
changed the setting of the Easter Egg Hunt
if it had to be moved indoors. While the
Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled for March 19
at Fireman's Park, which is next to Kennedy
Middle School, if the event had to be
moved indoors it will be held at the high
school under the change approved by the
board.
Retirement approved
The board approved the retirement of
Patricia E. Wichmann. Wichmann started
with the district in 1974 as a cook's helper
at the high school. She was an assistant
cook and assistant head cook from the
1991-92 school year until her retirement.
The board also approved the renewal
of contracts with Delta Dental for dental
and vision insurance which will result in no
increase for the district or employees.

Potluck and a Movie at Senior Center Aug. 14

offered at the Germantown Senior Center
Friday, Aug. 14 at 4:30 p.m. A potluck dinner will be followed by "The Hundred-Foot
Journey." Seniors should sign up for what
they want to bring for dinner and also

bring a place setting. Those interested

should sign up by Aug. 12. The center is
