A rare visit by a State government minister to Moorabool, since the last election,
has the local high school
excited.
Bacchus Marsh College is set
to receive a five-million dollar revamp thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.
Minister for Education
and Deputy Premier, James
Merlino visited the college
last Thursday to officially
announce the $5 million
modernisation, which was
secured in the 2015-16 Victo-
rian Budget and will be used

to build a brand new Year 9
centre.
Bacchus Marsh College
Principal, Dionne Fenton
said it was great to see Mr
Merlino honouring his election commitment.
This is exciting for the
town and it means a lot to be
able to make this a school of
choice, she said.
The 2015-16 Budget will invest $4-billion in Victorias
education and skills system,
with $325-million used for
the renovation, refurbishment or rebuilding of 67
schools.
Mr Merlino said the funding would provide every
community with a great local school and every child
with a chance to succeed.
This investment will give
students a state-of-the-art
learning environment, and
teachers the facilities to
continue providing a worldclass education, he said.
Mr Merlino said the next
six-months would be spent
on the design and planning
of the Year 9 centre, with
construction to commence
as soon as possible after that.

The proposal to build

a Bunnings at Bacchus
Marsh is now out for public
consultation.
The community can have
its say on the proposal from
Thursday 6 August until 18
September.
Known as Amendment C71,
the proposal seeks to rezone
land between Clifton Drive
and the Western Freeway to
Commercial 2 and issue a
planning permit for the development of a bulky goods
retail centre.
A Moorabool Shire Council
statement pointed out that
Bunnings is the proponent,
not council.
The proposal has already
met with opposition from
the community, with the
save our streets website listing community objections
and concerns around traffic
congestion in particular.
Mayor Paul Tatchell is urging those with a view on the
proposal to review the details and make a submission.
He said the community
has been debating this pro-
posal for a while and now

was their opportunity to be
better informed of whats
proposed and express their
view about it.

the appropriate point in the
planning process, prior to
a decision being made on
Amendment C71 and the
associated planning permit
application
(PA2013-187),

immediate vicinity of the
site that are most likely to be
impacted by the proposal.

submissions that cannot be
resolved and wishes to proceed with the amendment,
it must request the Minister for Planning appoint a

submissions and make recommendations to Council.
Council then must consider
the recommendations of the
panel in deciding whether to
adopt the amendment (with
or without change) or abandon the amendment.
If adopted, the Amendment
is submitted to the Minister

F word in new paper

A new discussion paper
on Victorias food and fibre sectors is set to include
the controversial issue of
foreign land ownership in
Moorabool.
Announcing the paper,
as part of the state governments $200 million
Future Industries Fund,
Ballarat-based Minister for
Agriculture and Regional
Development Jaala Pulford
said foreign ownership is an
important aspect of the local
agriculture industry.
With the growing middle
class in Asia and increased
demand for our high quality,
fresh, clean, produce there is
an enormous opportunity
for our growers and producers to tap into these new and
emerging markets, Ms Pulford said.
Ms Pulford added that a
balance is needed.
Foreign investment plays
an important role in supporting our food and fibre
sector here in Victoria, however its also important to ensure that we get the balance
right. We recognise that as
our cities and towns expand,
and populations continue to
grow, land use will play a
significant role in this ongoing discussion.
This is about taking a balanced approach between
supporting and growing our
vital agricultural sector and
land users, and also providing the right opportunities

for growth, planning and
housing development in our
regions.
I welcome a national discussion on land use, and
can assure you that I as both
Minister for Agriculture and
Minister for Regional Development I will be working to
strike the right balance between attracting investment
and development and continuing to protect, promote
and grow our important
agricultural sector.
A national register of foreign land ownership put in
place by the Federal Government came into effect this
month; all foreign investors
who hold interests in agricultural land and agribusiness must register those
with the Tax Office, regardless of the value of that land,
by the end of the year.
The discussion paper encourages farmers, fishers,
foresters and manufacturers
to have their say about the
opportunities and challenges facing the sector.
This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to have
their say on how to shape
and grow this vital sector,
Ms Pulford said

Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper

The discussion paper follows the release earlier this month of the Federal
Governments Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper.
The Peri Urban Group of Rural Councils - of which Moorabool Shire Council is
a member - welcomed the white paper as a good start.
The PUGRC had also advocated strongly for greater support to protect farm
land from inappropriate development and conflicting land use and to strengthen
the industry, said Group Chair Murray Cook.
The sad reality is that over the coming years we will see more and more houses,
roads and shops built on highly productive and well located agricultural land,
unless the retention of this land is made a priority of all levels of government.
Federal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said the white paper is a
strong plan for local farmers.
She outlined that the White Paper in combination with the 2015 Budget deliver
a better tax system for farm businesses by enabling:
banks to allow farmers to use FMDs as a business loan offset, reducing
interest costs estimated at up to $150 million a year, from 1 July 2016;
farmers to opt back into income tax averaging after 10 years, from 1 July
2016;
farmers to double their Farm Management Deposits (FMDs) to $800,000,
from 1 July 2016;
immediate tax deduction for fencing;
immediate tax deduction of the cost of new water infrastructure; and
accelerated three-year depreciation of capital expenditure on fodder assets.
As part of the white paper, the Government will also invest $11.4 million to boost
ACCC engagement with the agricultural sector including a new Commissioner
expert in agriculture.
A more farm-savvy and proactive ACCC will encourage fair trading and
strengthen competition in agricultural supply chains.
While foreign ownership is not a key point of the white paper, overseas import/
export issues are noted.
I am delighted that the White Paper includes $200 million to improve biosecurity
which will help ensure Australias premium products remain top quality and
$30.8 million to break down technical barriers to trade and appointing five new
overseas Agriculture Counsellors.

Ballan will be buzzing with
busy bees next month.
The Moorabool Catchment
Landcare Group will run
a two-day Introduction to
Beekeeping course, which
will be presented by experienced beekeeper David
Elms.
To be held at the Mechanics Institute, the workshop
will feature a number of
topics including the bee
lifecycle and swarming behaviour, beekeeping equipment, extracting and storing
honey, sources of pollen and
nectar and bee pests and
management.
Landcare coordinator, Elle
Fox said the workshop had
limited availability and
would cover the art of beekeeping on farms, smaller
properties and urban areas.
There are only 20 places
available, so get in quick and
make a booking, she said.
The two-day Introduction
to Beekeeping workshop
will be held at the Mechanics Institute Hall, Inglis
Street Ballan on August 15
and 16 from 9am to 5pm.
Tickets are $100 each and
$50 for MCLG members.

Ingredients
3 tablespoons Olive Oil
1 Onion, thinly sliced
4 Garlic cloves, peeled and sliced
1 Fresh Bay Leaf
1 Eggplant, cut into 1.5cms pieces (about 3 cups)
1 Zucchini, halved lengthwise and cut into thin
slices
1 Red Capsicum, cut into slivers
5 Roma Tomatoes, coarsely chopped (about 1
cups)
1 teaspoon Salt
1/2 cup shredded Fresh Basil Leaves
Freshly ground Black Pepper
Directions
1. Over medium heat, add the oil to a large pan
with the onion, garlic, and bay leaf, stirring
occasionally, until the onion has softened.
2. Add the eggplant and cook, stirring occasionally
until the eggplant has softened (5-8 minutes).
Stir in the zucchini, capsicum, tomatoes, and
salt, and cook over medium heat, stirring for 5 to
7 minutes or until the vegetables are tender. Stir
in the basil and few grinds of pepper to taste.
3. Serve with lamb, grilled chicken or a side of
cous cous!

Ballan will be leading the
way in literacy next month
as the annual Literacy Trail
returns to the main street.
A street festival for families and children, the Literacy trail is an initiative of
Moorabool Shire Councils
Best Start program, and is
designed to encourage a love
of books and reading whilst
bringing the whole community together in the spirit of
fun and learning.
Best Start Community Fa-
cilitator, Jane Gardner said

the program offered the
event as a way of supporting
childrens development and
wellbeing.
Research shows the more
literate our children are, the
better their employment,
health and lifestyle outcomes, she said.
The Literacy Trail attracts
hundreds of children from
local primary schools, kindergartens, childcare centres
and playgroup, as well as
members of the general public. We also enjoy the sup-
port and involvement from

local and state government,
community groups, local businesses, emergency
services and even sporting
personalities.
Alternating between the
main streets of Bacchus
Marsh and Ballan each year,
the Literacy Trail has seen
everything from a giant
scrabble set to a fire-eating
juggler and circus dogs.
The 2015 Literacy Trail will
be held on September 4 in Inglis Street, Ballan from 10am
to 1pm.

The program will:

grow your leadership skills and knowledge,
grow your connections in the community,
provide the opportunity for you to apply your skills by taking part in a
small community project that you identify, develop and run with a small
group of other participants,
challenge you!
Participants will visit a number of different sites throughout Moorabool, hearing
from agencies and organisations about current issues and exciting initiatives.
The program will be open to all residents over the age of 18 years and will be
at no cost!
What an incredible opportunity to be involved in a high quality leadership
program that will not only look amazing on your CV, but will also benet your
community and your employer (for those in paid work) or potential employers.

Rotary club, was launched in the
port barrel cellar at St. Annes
Winery last week, the venue for the
inaugural festival.

to have fun and celebrate our

Who has the breast beanie?
Confidential

Breastfeeding can be challenging, especially for new
mums but not as challenging as a competition being
held as part of International
Breastfeeding
Awareness
Week.
Locals are invited to pull
out their knitting needles
and other crafty tools to
make beanies as part of a
competition being held by
the Gordon CWA, together
with Councils Breastfeeding Support Services, to celebrate the week.
Beanies will be collected
at the Maternal and Child
Health Centres in Moorabool, and Council offices until August 1; there is no cost
to enter.
The first week in August is
international Breastfeeding
Awareness Week; the World
Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for babies to six months
of age, and thereafter for
breastfeeding to continue
alongside suitable complementary foods for up to two
years and beyond.
On Thursday 6 August
from 2.30pm to 3.30pm there
will be a special morning tea
and judging of the beanies
at Gordon Hall. Prizes will
be awarded for the most colourful, most creative and the
Mayors choice award.
All are welcome to attend

Inspectorate.

declined to comment to
the Moorabool News last
week, however released
a joint general statement
this week in relation to

recent speculation over the
investigation.
The investigation was at
the request of the council
over matters of concern
it become aware of, the
statement read.
Council
is
providing
every support to the Local
Government Inspectorate to
investigate the matter. The
matter cannot be discussed
by councillors or staff as it is of
a confidential nature. When
a final report is received
from the inspectorate the
matters can be made public
as appropriate.
The speculation included
that one former and one
previous councillor are
being investigated, and that
the investigation has been
going for an extended period
of time.

After 40 years, the Ballan
and District Art and Craft
Society has called it a day.
Having met weekly in the
house behind the Uniting
Church in Ballan for weaving, spinning, pottery, painting and crafts, membership
had dwindled down to 15
- and also, aged.
The problem is, were all
elderly - Im 80 myself and
Im not the only one. The
numbers were slowly dwindling, and we couldnt get
people who would want to
take the President, or Secretary or Treasury roles, said
the Societys last President
Margaret Hillier.
People were happy to come
along and do their work and
enjoy each others company,
but it was getting hard to do
it properly. We had to make

the decision.
The Ballan Art Show, part of
the Ballan Autumn Festival,
was run by the Society that
will no longer be able to do
it but there is hope that
another group may pick up
where the Society left off.
What were hoping is that
maybe a few years down the
line a new group will turn
up in a different form, as
things change.
Were becoming unincorporated this year, but were
hoping another group will
take over the Art Show.
Theres been some interest,
but its early days yet. Were
hoping it will be taken over
but its a lot of hard work.
Ms Hillier paid tribute to
Jesse Davis who has been
Secretary of the Societys Art
Show Committee for many
years, and also thanked local groups who helped the

Society along the way.
The Mens Group used to
do heavy lifting for us, they
would set up the stalls we
couldnt have done it without their help. Also Moorabool Shire Council for their
generous use of the chambers and facilities as the
venue for the Show.
And while the Society itself will no longer operate,
small groups will continue
one will be run on Tuesday
mornings at the Senior Citizens Centre for craftwork,
while another will continue
to paint.
Its been a wonderful, wonderful experience, weve had
some really good people.
The companionship will
continue but without the
name.

The Ballarat Football Netball League held its biannual Women in Football
luncheon on Friday, with
over 150 people gathering at
the Ballarat Leagues Club to
celebrate women in sport.
Held in conjunction with
the weekends Women in
Football round and raising
funds for the White Ribbon
Foundation, the event boasted the hugely important role
that women play within
football and netball clubs.
A special panel featured an
array of sporting excellence
including Western Bulldogs
vice-president Dr Susan
Alberti, Australian netball
great Eloise Southby, AFL
goal umpire Chelsea Roffey,
international netballer Liz
Watson, and Ballarat sportswomen Kaitlyn Ashmore
(football) and Kellie McLeod
(football umpiring).
Dr Alberti entertained the
crowd with an inspiring
speech about her passion
for not only seeing females
in football circles but also
her passion for medical research and the importance
of health.
We have some fantastic
female talent in this country and we need to applaud
them, she said.
Retired netballer Eloise
Southby spoke about her
journey from a junior player
to a Commonwealth Games
gold medallist, whilst outlining her hopes to one day
see men and women taking
part in sport as a team.
Meanwhile, AFL Goldfields
commissioner Sue Brown
unveiled a new scholarship program, which will
provide three $500 grants
to women actively involved
in coaching, umpiring or
administration in the Goldfields region. Dr Alberti announced she would match
the $1500 amount.
The Ballarat FNL Woman
of the Year award was also
announced, with Lorissa Edwards from the Darley FNC
taking out the award along
side Natalee McKay from
Lake Wendouree Juniors.

A Bacchus Marsh man has

received a $3000 fine after
a crash that left two people,
one of which was his wife,
with serious injuries.
Robert Batrich pleaded
guilty to one charge of negligently causing injury in the
Bacchus Marsh Magistrates
Court on Friday, July 31.
On the evening of September 16 2014, the accused was
travelling west along Parwan Road in Maddingley
when he failed to give way
at the intersection of Bacchus
Marsh-Geelong and ExfordParwan roads.
The 70-year-old allegedly
collided with another vehicle, forcing it to roll.
Emergency services were
called to the scene just before
8pm and two people were
transported in separate air
ambulances to Melbournes
Alfred Hospital.
The victim, who was aged
in his 60s, sustained a

number of injuries including multiple broken bones,
fractured ribs and abrasions,
which resulted in over three
months of hospitalisation
and rehabilitation.
Batrichs wife was also
harmed in the collision,
where she sustained four
fractured ribs and pelvic and
leg injuries.
Following the accident,
Victoria Police conducted
a safety review and collision reconstruction, which
indicated that the accused
would have been travelling
at speeds of up to 82km/h.
Batrichs solicitor stated that
his client was still in shock
following
the
accident,
however believed there was
no way he could have been
travelling anywhere over
30km/h.
He has used that intersection on a daily basis for four
years and has indicated to
me that he would not be able
to do a turn at that kind of
speed, he said.
My client is a grandfather
of 11 children, he has been
a taxi driver for 50-years
and has no driving record
whatsoever.
Magistrate Cynthia Toose
said she accepted that Batrich was a professional
driver, however despite the
circumstances the incident
was very serious.
I understand that there is
never intent for a collision,
however there is nothing I
can do that will adequately
reflect any compensation
for the victim. In saying that
though, I also understand
that whilst it has been very
traumatic for him, it has also
been traumatic for you [Batrich], she said.
Magistrate Toose said she
had taken into account Batrichs cooperation with the
police, his age and good
character and ordered him
to pay a $3000 fine, whilst
suspending his license for a
period six-months.

Dear Editor,
I am glad that finally, after
six weeks of campaigning by
local commuters, the Public
Transport Minister has made
time in her busy schedule to
ride one of our morning services to Melbourne.
In the 36 days since the
Minister introduced her new
Regional Rail Link timetable Ballarat and Moorabool
V/Line passengers have
endured overcrowded, unreliable and inconvenience
travel to work and school.
Commuters have called my
office, contacted local papers, tweeted and posted
on Facebook, begging the
Minister to ride the train
and experience the problems
firsthand.
In the meantime the Minister has been squarely

focused on her expensive,
city centric level crossing
removal program, visiting
suburban stations in marginal electorates across Melbourne. In fact the Ministers
only regional transport
announcement in this time
will make her own commute to Melbourne, from her
hometown of Bendigo, more
convenient.
I hope that the Minister has
finally woken up to the mess
that the Andrews Government has made of the Ballarat lines public transport
system.
This is not just about a couple of carriages that could
take months to arrive; its
about listening to the local

community about what they
need and actually delivering
it.

public transport from governments of all colours.
The Liberal, Labor and
National Parties have all
played a part in the delays,
overcrowding and lateness
of trains.
One of the biggest problems we currently have with

trains and carriages.
So why didnt the previous
Liberal-National
Government invest in new rolling
stock? Surely, it was obvious
that demand for V/Line services was growing at such
a huge rate that new trains
were required?
V/Line admits it is dozens
and dozens of carriages and
trains short of what it needs
to provide better services. So
who is to blame?
Buying a train carriage isnt
like visiting your Holden
dealership looking for a new
car. They take a long, long
time to build, meaning the
overcrowding on V/Line services isnt likely to disappear
any time soon.
Mr Hodgett and Mr Morris
travelled the train, showing
their concern for the travelling public, smiling for
the cameras and no doubt
theyll attack that dreaded
Labor Government for the
current situation.
But as they took their pub-
licity ride, I wonder what

were just some of the projects on display at a recent
science fair held at Bacchus
Marsh College.
Year 8 science students
spent four weeks in and out
of class working on their
projects, which were showcased in the schools drama
hall on Friday, July 24.
A number of researchbased projects were on display such as How Colour
Influences
Impressions,
How Nuclear Power Works,
How Meteorologists Read
the Weather and How to
Bounce an Egg.
A teachers award was chosen on the day and students

were also encouraged to
engage in the experiments
before placing a sticky note
on their favourite project,
which represented their vote
for the student choice award.
The winning projects were
How do Internal Combustion Engines Work? and
Fire Bubbles.
Year 8 engagement coordinator, Alex Brown said the
decision was made to hold
the schools first science fair
in order to engage students
and give them an opportunity outside the school
curriculum.
Many students express interests in areas we dont have
time to cover so it was fantastic to see them engaged

and excited about science,
she said.
I can see this event running next year, hopefully it
will only get bigger and better over the next few years.

Restoring degraded land

gathered in the Rowsley
sunshine to celebrate a decade of tree planting.
Around 200 green thumbs
attended the 10th annual
Grow West communityplanting day in order to help
local farmers John and Tristia Lakey restore vegetation
to their 105-hectare property.
Around 5,000 seedlings
were planted in order to
restore degraded land and
improve biodiversity links.

Last week I briefly spoke of
the government of the Netherlands being ordered by the
legal system to increase its
use of renewable energy. So
now it is Australias chance;
but first of all Victoria.
There is a movement afoot
to follow the example of the
Dutch citizens. The following is about that movement
and an encouragement to
join it. This movement goes
under the catchy title of
Victoria needs a Climate
Charter. The questions
asked by the people behind
this movement are: feeling

lawyer currently speaking
in Australia about this case)
story of ordinary Dutch citizens making their government act on climate change?

The movement writes,
Marjans story gave inspiration and hope to many who
despair of real government
action on this most crucial
of all environmental issues.
With the Abbott government
stalling Australias efforts to
tackle global warming, leadership from state governments is needed now more
than ever.
As you might be aware, although it is not headline material in the press, in 2010 the
Victorian government introduced the Victorian Climate
Change Act. Right now, the
Victorian government is
considering the future of
the states climate laws, and
is calling for public submissions on the Act. Hence,
Environmental Justice Australia is joining Friends of
the Earth, Environment
Victoria, and the Australian

Conservation Foundation to
call on the Andrews government to adopt world leading
climate change laws - the
Victorian Climate Charter.
The Climate Charter proposal would make Victoria
a world leader on climate
change. It sets binding emission reductions targets for
Victoria, establishes a climate test for decisions that
affect emissions, and gives
citizens the right to take
the government to court if
it is not meeting its climate
obligations. It is critical that
Victorians use the Climate
Change Act review to demand action, and counter
calls from industry to go soft
on tackling global warming.

Which advanced country
has the most climate sceptics? Hint: Its not the United
States. A new study ranks
14 industrialized nations
by climate science denial.
The following details are
thanks to the journal Global
Environmental Change. The
study that analysed identical
surveys carried out across 14
industrialized nations found
that when it comes to climate
science denial, Australia
tops the lot at 17%.
Norwegians come in second at 15 per cent, followed
by New Zealanders at 13
percent and then Americans
at 12 per cent. The U.K. was
ranked joint fifth, together
with Sweden and Finland,
where 10 per cent of people
were sceptics. The lowest
ranked country for climate
scepticism was Spain, where
only two per cent of people
were classified as climate
sceptics.
While the survey did not
directly ask people if they
accepted the science linking
climate change to human
activities, the respondents

were asked how dangerous
rising temperatures would
be for the environment.
People who thought rising temperatures were not
very dangerous or not
dangerous at all and who
also thought claims about
environmental issues were
exaggerated, were classed
as climate sceptics. While
the authors accept in the paper that their approach was
limited, they argue that the
method enables them to do
a valuable comparison of
scepticism across countries.
Generally, the study found
that climate scepticism tended to be associated with a
lack of trust in governments
and positive attitudes towards private enterprise.
Sceptics also tended to be
male and tended to vote
conservative. The researchers also tried to test the idea
that climate sceptics tended
to also be generally unconcerned about environmental

issues, but found those two
measures were only modestly linked with each other.
Across all countries, the authors wrote that only three
factors political orientations (conservative), gender
(male) and being unconcerned about environmental
issues were relatively
consistent predictors of climate change scepticism. The
findings tend to support other studies that have found
that conservative ideologies
and support for private enterprise are strong indicators
of climate scepticism and
denial. The question follows,
what can we do about these
conservative males?

first home or an investment
property, its important not
to be overly influenced by
what youve seen on popular
home renovation shows.
Agents report hearing comments such as, it lacks the
wow factor or it just doesnt
grab me or Im looking for
my forever home.
Buying a house is the biggest purchase most of us
will ever make. So it is vital
to do thorough research,
seek advice, including financial advice, and listen to
the experts. And remember
reality television shows
are not reality. They are entertainment, edited to keep
us involved, to create those
highs and lows, those tears
and dramatic moments that

make great viewing but
which we hope to avoid in
our own lives.
Before beginning your
house hunt make a list of
everything you want from
your home or investment
property. Dont hold back.
Now, think carefully about
each item on the list and
number them in order of
priority.
For example, if you think
finding your dream home
is more important than the
location, imagine yourself
living well away from a
regional centre, or next to
major infrastructure such as
a railway line or main road.
Now where does location
rate in your priorities?
Subject each item on your

list to that ruthless assessment. Ask yourself whether
it is essential from day one.
For example, if you want a
luxury, open plan kitchen
do you need it immediately
or are you happy to add it
yourself as long as there is
enough left in your budget?
After that exercise, and
before hitting the internet,
make two lists: one of all
those items deemed essential, in order of priority; the
other, all those you would
like to have but, if compromise is needed, could live
without.
Now you are ready to start
your research: what are your
preferred areas? What is
the median price of homes
in those towns or regional

centres? What are homes
selling for there, particularly
homes the size and location
you want? Attend auctions,
study the properties and
learn the sale price.
Local agents can explain
why a home fetched a particular price did it have a
large yard, were there two
buyers in hot competition on
auction day, was it sought by
a developer?
At open homes, be guided
by your list, not first impressions. The key question
is: does this home have all
the features you decided
were essential? Try not to be
wowed by superb styling
a pretty garden, a brightly
painted fence and a carefully

weeded driveway can easily
be created; more bedrooms
or a better location, not so
easily.
Giving practical advice
can be easier than taking it.
Sometimes its hard to separate head from heart. Buyers
agents keep emotion out of
the transaction, undertaking
detailed research and drawing on their skills, training
and experience to find the
right property for buyers
who hire them. So if your
house hunt is foundering
for lack of the wow factor,
perhaps it is time to call in a
professional and hand over
your lists.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics
The Centre Cross Country meet was held at Egans Reserve, Greendale last Saturday morning. This was the first race at
this venue this season. Although a relatively flat course, the continual change of directions through the winding course of
the reserve didnt allow for many fast times to be recorded. The overnight and early morning showers also made it slippery
underfoot but thankfully the showers had blown over by the time races were due to commence.
This Saturdays Cross Country meet will see athletes return to Bostock Reservoir, Ballan. The following week, August 15
there will be no home run. The season will then conclude on August 22 at Masons Lane, where a handicap format will be
conducted for all races. The theme of this meet will be Crazy Socks, where all athletes are encouraged to wear a pair of crazy
socks to run in. The season presentations will then be conducted at the conclusion of all races.

time. The team was rarely troubled and came home strongly

on the top team. Despite the score, the team made their

The junior coach said it was a huge team effort and the kids
played fantastic with every player scoring goals.

Seniors
The seniors played a solid four quarters that saw them
easily get the four points. The team played a consistent game
against a defiant Skipton team. Coach Corey Grills said it
was a good chance to consolidate our percentage going into a
tight finals series. Forward Steve Nicholson sits equal leader
on the goal kicking ladder with 60 for the season.

Reserves
In boggy conditions the team recorded a good win. Three
under 18 boys, Mitch Peterkin, Issac Bowker and Shane Hicks
stepped up and performed well. Better performers were John
Manchee, Stu Miller, Dave Young and Robbie Winter.
Under 18
Although the boys did not come away with a win their
coach said their persistence and team work has continued
to develop over the season. Better players were Shane, Isaac,
Matt, Zac, Nick, Darcy and Declan.
Under 15
It was a great display of teamwork from the juniors against
Skipton. Players ran hard and linked well to move the ball
down the field and were rewarded on the scoreboard. The
defence was strong and the midfield dominant . Prominent
players included Macauley Griffiths, Mitchell Labbett and
Ethan Valentine.

After an improved training session this week the team came
out full of confidence and got the first score on the board.
Up against a quality opposition in Skipton the team attacked

The Bacchus Marsh Football Netball Club travelled up to Ballarat

on the weekend to play East Point and unfortunately some of the
much needed results did not go our way. In regards to football
each of the teams were clearly beaten by a much more determined

The netball girls also had a tough day at the office with each of the
teams unfortunately losing except for the B Graders who had a
great 14 goal victory. With the finals only a couple of weeks away,
we still have a couple of teams still in the running to play finals, the
A Reserves are holding onto 6th position and the B graders (with
their great win on the weekend) have given themselves a chance
depending on results over the next couple of weeks. It has been
a long season for these girls who are playing multiple games each
weekend and have continually given their ALL each and every time.
This weekend Bacchus Marsh has a bye so it will give the teams an
opportunity to freshen up prior to the last 2 games.
The Bacchus Marsh Womans Football team played Melton Centrals
on the weekend and after Melton got the jump on them for the
first half of the 1st quarter, the girls quickly realised that they could
match it with their bigger opponents. By half time the girls were
only 8 points down and had some belief however, the wind picked
up allowing Melton to dominate the game with the ball up there
end for much of the third quarter and eventually ran out victors by

What an inspirational game
the under 15 girls had. The
never give up attitude, determination and hard work the
girls have put in all year has
begun to show. Every single
player put their heart and
soul into Saturday and the
nail biting score line made
the win all the more special.
17&Under
Another top effort by the
girls this week. Both the
defensive and attacking
combinations were on song,
gelling well with each other
throughout the court. The
pressure applied by everyone was great, keeping
the opposition to only one
goal in the last quarter. Sam
Trickey was unstoppable
in GA, earning her best on
court. Ballan 46 defeated
Beaufort 13.
C Grade
Ballan again started the
game
strongly,
Simone
Dunne and Bec Treadwell
combining well in defence
to stop the Beaufort goalers.
Beaufort came out strong in
the second quarter which
saw them take the lead at
half time and then increase
it in the third quarter. Ballan however fought back,
Ash Mackay worked hard in
the midcourt and in goals as
did Kayleigh Lord on centre.

Ballan won the last quarter
but were unable to peg back
Beauforts lead. Beaufort 27
defeated Ballan 23. Best on
court Tamara Hodge.
B Grade
The girls were pumped and
ready for a good game. With
the late inclusion of Katelyn
McGregor the girls came out
firing. The midcourt worked
tirelessly with hard drives
onto the ring allowing easy
feeds into the ring. Bianca
played a strong half while
Bec Conroy had hands over
every ball allowing easy intercepts. Mel Conroy again
was outstanding in GD,
she shut down Beauforts A
grade goaler with the assistance of Kylie. Kath was outstanding with beautiful base
line drives with Katelyn and
Jayme. Katelyn, an under 17s
player really stepped it up
for her first game in seniors
with strong rebounds and
feeding. The girls are on the
right path to slip into top
eight.. Ballan 41 defeated
Beaufort 30. Best on court Melissa Conroy.

A Grade
With another strong start to
the game, the Blues never
looked rattled. Again the
goalers were reliable and
strong under the ring. Sam
Peoples has been playing
some excellent netball and
with the assurance of Broden Currie they are a strong
duo. Stacey and Kara Jones
created endless space and
drives providing time for
our goalers to set up. Alex
and Peggy Shellard did their
job with various intercepts
and talking to our defenders. Nicole was exceptional
shutting down Beauforts
goaler and took endless intercepts in crucial moments
of the game. The last quarter
(21-1) demonstrated Ballans
determination to finish the
home and away season off
strong ready for finals. Ballan 53 defeated Beaufort 18.

The Senior Blues have now
reached the lofty heights of
fifth on the league ladder
with its eighth straight win
and finals action only three
weeks away. On a boggy
track the Blues had an early
lead with Marcus Crook
opening the goal scoring
challenge following a great
mark in the square. The
Crows were not to be underestimated and came back at
the Blues in the second quarter and at the main break the
Blues trailed by a goal. But a
stern reminder by the coaching team as to what was at
stake had the desired result
and from then on the Blues
never looked back. The tight
Blues defence led by Daniel
Nielsen kept the Crows goalless from that point on and
the Blues booted five to seal
the result. The Blues have
two tough matches to finish
off the season with Buninyong away, then Hepburn
at home.

The Reserves took on the
Beaufort Crows who sit third
on the league ladder. Their
line up had some outstanding experience from the senior ranks and from the start
showed off their talent. In
the first quarter they booted
five goals and held the Blues
goalless. To the Blues credit
they did recover and as
the game progressed they

matched their opponents
goal for goal but the damage
was done in the first quarter and in the end the Blues
went down by four goals .
Leading league goalkicker
Bernie Whelan booted three
goals with David OHanlon
never giving up in the middle, assisted by Sam Sims
doing his best to steady the
ship in defence after the first
quarter onslaught. The Blues
have now slipped to third
position on the ladder.
