Russia and Houston Women To Take Part

In Susan G. Komen 3-Day/60-Mile Walk for a Cure
Suzette Vastano of Russia and her best friend, Nicole
Ingle of Houston, are preparing for a three-day event to
raise awareness for breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen
3-Day Philadelphia Walk will take place October 2, 3,
and 4. The event will take participants through the scenic
parks and historic communities of Philadelphia and the
surrounding area.
When someone has breast cancer you know you have
to do something. Thats why the Susan G. Komen 3-Day
was created. Its definitely not something small walking 20 miles straight for three days in a row. But when it
comes to breast cancer, the biggest, toughest thing is the
very least you can do.
Each participant must raise a minimum of $2,300. Sev- Suzette VaStano (left) and best
enty-five percent of the net proceeds from this event help friend nicole Ingle of Houston, who
support Susan G. Komens Research and Training Grant will walk with her to raise money for
Program and large public health outreach programs for breast cancer awareness
women and men facing breast cancer. The remaining 25
percent helps fund local community and affiliate support and outreach programs.
Participation in this event is a personal one for Suzette Vastano. She is taking part in memory
of her mother, Becky Ayers, who was diagnosed in 2004. Vastano explains, When my mother
was diagnosed with breast cancer I felt helpless. Sixty miles is no easy task, but this is something
I can do something I must do. Finding a cure for cancer is a passion of mine. I dont want my
daughter to have to go through what my Mom did for nine years. Unfortunately, both of my
daughters grandmothers had breast cancer.
To participate in the Walk, Vastano and Ingle must each raise a total of $2,300. To help them
achieve their goals, you can donate to their cause by visiting www.the3day.org, or call 800-9963DAY.
Suzette and Nicole thank you in advance for any contributions you can make for this very
important endeavor.

Pumpkin Show Property Decorating

Contest Changes More Cost-Conscious
In the 1980s, two women Glenna Trevino Curry and Rita Grow Leis who served on the Board for
the Community Festival Association, started a new competition for the Bradford Pumpkin Show the Property Decorating Contest. It stirred up much excitement and brought hundreds and hundreds to town to
admire the beautiful extravaganza of lights.
Glenna and Rita know that it can be quite expensive to decorate, so they are making a few changes to
help with this. The full competition will be held only every other year, and a simplified contest will be held
other years.
This year, for the 87th show, they are asking eveRyone to get involved. Please help them to make
this the greatest display ever. If you dont want to decorate your entire property, please put out some pumpkins and lights to add to the festival.
Remember... your participation is very much needed. Lets help revive the festival in this very important
way.
Friends, families, neighbors, businesses, clubs, groups, school organizations, churches, and anyone who
wants to promote the 87th Annual Bradford Pumpkin Show is encouraged to get involved and make this

With Thanks.
The family of Phyllis J. Beeman extends our gratefulness to all of
our family and special friends who supported us upon Phyllis
passing. The kind thoughts, gifts, prayers and hugs gave us comfort during this time. Each story shared reminded us what a full
life she lived. Knowing that she was able to bring joy to so many
with her endless wit, brought us solace, during a difficult time in
our lives. We are thankful for all of the memories that we will
continue to share over the coming years. We would like to extend
our thanks to Stillwater Community Church, Pastor Ralph
Schaafsma, Jackson-Sarver Funeral Home, and State of the
Heart Hospice. A special thank you is given to Claire Bridge of
Greenville. The ladies and gentlemen there became an extension
of our family and we are appreciative of the care that was given
to Phyllis during her time with them. Phyllis will forever hold a
special place in our hearts, as will all of you.

the
Stillwater
Stargazers and explore the starry night sky Saturday, Aug. 15,
10 p.m., at Brukner Nature
Center. Members will have
their telescopes set up and will
answer any questions.
This FREE program is open
to the public, following the
Night Hike.
The nature center is located
at 5995 Horseshoe Bend Rd.,
Troy.

The next day she had an appointment with the director.

Night Hike Planned

At BNC August 15

Ginger came home a little rejected, but the director didnt know whom she was dealing
with. They dont call her the white tornado for nothing. When shes determined, she can
and will get the job done.

Brukner Nature Center will

hold a Night Hike Saturday,
Aug. 15, at 9 p.m.
Every
month
BNC
Naturalists plan a nighttime
experience into the Brukner
woodlands. Take off into the
woods on this adventure,
which is FREE and open to
the public.
BNC is located at 5995
Horseshoe Bend Rd., Troy.

Id like to have a local painting class, and give the entire proceeds to the Frost Proof art
league, she suggested.
What do you have in mind? The director remarked.
Canvas and Wine is a very popular event in Ohio, so I thought this would be a good
fundraiser, she answered.
Oh no, we couldnt do that here in the Art League building, she admitted. That would
be against our rules and regulations.

A few days later Ginger went back to the art director and changed her plan to Coffee,
Cookies and Canvas.
Why yes, we can do that, the director smiled.
I thought so, Ginger asserted.
When Ginger returned, I asked her how the meeting had gone?
Very well, she explained. We can use the building. They will supply the paints and
advertising. And Ive asked a Florida friend to help me decorate.
The painting was a picture of a Whales tail coming out of the ocean with a big splash.
Thirteen ladies enjoyed coffee, cookies, and painting their canvases. $390 was raised for
the Art League. And everyone went home happy.
This weeks bottom line: I told you. Ginger is the White Tornado.
It always seems impossible, until its done. Nelson Mandela

Miami County Youth Recognized

By Ohio Cattlemens Association
The 2014-2015 Ohio Cattlemens Association (OCA)
BEST (Beef Exhibitor Show Total) Program wrapped up
May 9 with its annual awards banquet held at the Ohio
Expo Center in Columbus.
The banquet is a time to celebrate the many achievements of our BEST participants, both in and out of the show
ring, says Stephanie Sindel, BEST coordinator. Each participant is recognized for their hard work by family, friends,
and BEST supporters alike.
Several representatives from program sponsors, Bob
Evans Farms, Burroughs Frazier Farms, Farm Credit MidAmerica, Franklin Equipment LLC, M.H. Eby, Ohio Farm
Bureau Federation, and Weaver Livestock, were on hand to
help present awards totaling more than $50,000 in belt buckles, furniture, show materials, and other awards.
This years BEST program featured 15 sanctioned shows
that weaved its way across the state with 401 youth participants showing 562 head of market animals and heifers.
Seth Clark received the 12th Overall Crossbred Steer title.
He is the son of Chris Clark of Covington.

CASA Representative to Address

League of Women Voters

House-hunting? Check out our weekly real estate classifieds.

Kay Robbins, Director of CASA, will share information about

Court Appointed Special Advocates with LWV members and guests
at their annual membership party for the League of Women Voters of
Darke County. Shirla Neff will host this annual event at her home,
with the intent of giving members and potential LWV members insight into CASA and our local League of Women Voters.
This gathering, scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 13, at 7 p.m., features Robbins discussing the role of these volunteers who are trained
to speak for neglected and abused children in the court room. League
members will be available to discuss the various educational activities
our local LWV sponsors, such as Candidates Night before each election in which there is a contest between or among candidates. The
League is non-partisan and educational in purpose.
Sharing light refreshments together will give guests an additional
opportunity to chat and learn more about CASA and the League of
Women Voters.
For more information about this upcoming event and/or about the
League of Women Voters of Darke County, call Shirla at 937-5485378 or email her at sndnfl@hotmail.com.
