Green IT: Enabling Sustainable Development and Environment, the IT way

BY IEEE DISTINGUISHED SPEAKER Dr. SAN MURUGESAN

Abstract:
The ongoing socio-economic developments around the world contribute to increase in carbon-dioxide emission and
environmental deterioration, causing global warming which presents serious risks to us. So, we need to go 'green'
fostering sustainable development and environment. Information technology (IT) has irrevocably transformed
almost everything that we deal with; now it has a new agenda help create a greener environment while fostering
socio-economic development. While IT can help address growing environmental problems, it also contributes to the
problem, though to a much lesser extent. We can, however, make IT systems and their use greener as well as apply
IT innovatively in several other domains to minimize their negative impact on our environment.
In this seminar, with brief introduction to environmental problems that confront us and environmental impacts of IT,
Dr. Murugesan, Distinguished Visitor of IEEE Computer Society, will outline the scope, different facets, and
practices of Green IT. He'll also illustrate how individuals and enterprises are embracing green IT gaining benefits
for themselves and helping to create a better, greener world. He will also engage in interactive discussion with
participants.
