SOLOZINC 11

LOW HUMIDITY CURABLE INORGANIC ZINC

SILICATE

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A two component self-curing solvent based inorganic zinc ethyl silicate. Distinguished from other zinc silicate
primers as being capable of curing even at low relative humidity. Complies with the performance requirements of
SSPC Paint 20.

INTENDED USES / CHARACTERISTICS

As a metallic zinc pigmented primer to provide excellent protection to steel substrates galvanically, for use

with a wide range of high performance systems in offshore and onshore environments including oil
production platforms, refineries, bridges, petrochemical plants, power stations, tanks, pipework and
structural steelwork. Ideal for giving long term protection to structural steel prior to field topcoating. It has
excellent compatibility with cathodic and impressed current protection.
It is an excellent weldable primer with minimal burn back effect.
Can be used for new construction and as fast drying weldable primer, capable of application in a wide range of
climatic conditions including low temperatures and even at low relative humidity. And due to its excellent
abrasion resistance will provide excellent protection to steel during transit.
o
Will tolerate surfaces, which reach 400 oC continuos or 500 intermittent and as low as -80 C.

Dry film thickness in excess of 125 microns must be avoided since mud cracking could occur. If this appears, blast cleaning to bright metal and repriming will be necessary. Avoid exceeding recommended dry film thickness.
* Bellow 40% relative humidity minimum overcoating time should be increased. Before overcoating check that the film is fully cured.
** In the absence of zinc salts and other contaminants.

FURTHER INFORMATION
SURFACE PREPARATION
AS A RULE: All surfaces to be blasted/coated should be clean dry and free from oil and grease
contamination. Prior to paint application all surfaces should be assessed and treated in
accordance with ISO 8504:1992. Oil or grease should be removed in accordance with SSPCSP1 solvent cleaning.

STEEL
Blast clean to a minimum of Sa 2 1/2 Swedish Standard SIS 05 5900 (ISO 8501-1:1988) or near White
metal SSPC-SP6 (SSPC-SP 10 for optimum performance). If oxidation has occurred between blasting
and application, the surface should be reblasted to the specified visual standard. Surface defects
revealed by the blast cleaning process, should be ground, filled, or treated in the appropriate manner.
The steel profile should be sharp and should not be greater than 75 microns. It is strongly
recommended that weld spatters is removed and weld seams and sharp edges are rounded before
blast cleaning.
When top coated ensure that the surface of the primer is clean, dry, and free from contamination and zinc
salts before application. Ensure zinc silicates are fully cured before overcoating. Newly cured zinc silicate
primer is preferably over-coated first with a mist coat or a tie coat to reduce the risk of bubbling before
application of the subsequent coating system.

Shop Primed Steelwork

SOLOZINC 11 is suitable for application to steelwork freshly coated with zinc silicate shop primers.
If the zinc shop primer shows extensive or widely scattered breakdown, or excessive zinc corrosion
products, overall sweep blasting or / and fresh water washing, will be necessary. Other types of shop
primer are not suitable for overcoating and will require complete removal by abrasive blast cleaning.
Weld seams and damaged areas should be blast cleaned to Sa2 (ISO 8501-1:1988) or SSPC-SP6.

APPLIED FILM THICKNESS

AVOID EXCEEDING RECOMMENDED DRY FILM THICKNESS in a single coat.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
The following minimum precautions should be observed for any paint:
A ) take precaution to a void skin and eye contact (i.e. gloves, goggles, face mask, barrier creams etc.)
B ) provide adequate ventilation .
C ) if the product comes in contact with the skin, wash thoroughly with lukewarm water and soap or suitable industrial cleaner . If the eyes are
contaminated flush with water (minimum 10 minutes) and obtain medical attention at once.
D ) since this product contains flammable materials, keep away from heat, sparks and open flames .no smoking should be permitted in the area.
E ) observe all precaution notices on containers.

DEFINITIONS
Tolerance
Spreading rate

The numerical information quoted in this data sheet is subject to normal manufacturing tolerances.
Practical spreading rate can vary depending on application condition, the complication of the structure,
the weather condition etc.

Volume solids

The volume solids figure given in the data sheet is the percentage of dry film obtained from a given wet
film thickness under specified application rate and conditions.

Overcoating

The intervals given assume preparation consist with good painting practice.

SOLOZINC 11

LOW HUMIDITY CURABLE INORGANIC ZINC

SILICATE

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
GENERAL PROPERTIES.

SOLOZINC 11, LIKE ALL WELL FORMULATED INORGANIC ZINC SILICATE, THE
PROTECTION GIVEN TO THE STEEL IS THROUGH THE GALVANIC ACTION OF THE ZINC
METAL.
SOLOZINC 11 LOW HUMIDITY CURABLE INORGANIC ZINC SILICATE IS SPECIALLY
FORMULATED TO CURE WELL EVEN UNDER LOW HUMIDITY CONDITIONS
ENCOUNTERED ON SOME PARTS OF THE WORLD, LIKE PARTS OF THE ARABIAN AND
AFRICAN DESERTS.
AN ADVANCED FEATURE OF SOLOZINC 11, IS THAT PART 1 IS A ZINC PAST
ELIMINATING THE NEED TO MIX THE ZINC AS POWDER ON SITE WHICH RESULT IN
LUMPS, LOSSES, FREQUENT GUN BLOCKAGE, AND NON-UNIFORM FILMS. THIS MAY
CANCEL THE ESSENTIAL PROPERTY OF THE ZINC COATINGS, I. E. GALVANIC
PROTECTION, REDUCE FILM ADHESION AND INTGRITY (MUD CRACKING).

SOLOZINC 11 CAN BE USED AS THE ONLY PROTECTING COAT TO PROVIDE

EXCELLENT PROTECTION TO STEEL IN SOME ENVIRONMENTS AND ALSO CAN SERVE
AS THE BASE FOR OTHER GENERIC TYPES OF TOP COATS TO SERVE IN DEFERRING
ENVIRONMENTS. THE MAIN USE OF SOLOZINC 11 IS TO PROTECT STEEL STRUCTURE
AND TANKS IN INDUSTRIAL AREAS AND ESPECIALLY CHEMICAL ONES.
