purple martin is a sight to behold.
or over a decade, the Maurice River has been a

staging site for the purple martin fall migration.
Being unique to the region, it is a must-see for
any resident or nature enthusiast.
Therefore, Citizens United to Protect the Maurice
River (CU) will be hosting its 14th annual Purple
Martin Spectacular Cruise over two weekends this
month. True to its name, this natural phenomenon has
been spectacular in the past. Last year, purple martin
expert Allen Jackson estimated there were over
250,000 birds gathered on the marshes of the Maurice.
The purple martin is the largest North American swallow. These agile fliers dart about catching insects, most
notably mosquitoes.
Fingers crossed that our southbound friends dont
disappoint this year. No matter what, you will enjoy an
informative sunset cruise on the Bodacious as naturalists from CU and NJ Audubon will identify and explain
points of natural and cultural interest.

for this Sunday, August 9, from 2 to 9
p.m. at Giampietro Park in Vineland.
Celebrate New Jerseys agricultural heritage at
a live produce auction, featuring fresh fruits
and vegetables grown on local farms. Proceeds
from the produce auction are used to provide
scholarships to area students majoring in agricultural or related fields.
Admission to the festival and parking are
free. Shuttle buses will transport festival goers
from the parking area at Vineland High School

Vineland Tax Bills Mailed,
Grace Period Extended

Vineland tax bills were mailed July 27,

2015. As a result, the grace period for the
Third Quarter Property Tax has been
extended to August 25, 2015. Payments
must be received by the Tax Office by
August 25, 2015. Per State of New Jersey
regulations, postmarks will not be accepted. However, after August 25, 2015, interest
will be calculated from August 1, 2015.
Interest will be charged at the rate of 8
percent on the first $1,500.00 of delinquency and 18 percent on any amount of delin-
quency over $1,500. (N.J.S.A. 54:4-67) As

well as a 6 percent year-end penalty on any
balance owing as of December 31, in excess
of $10,000. If you have any questions, contact the Tax Office at 856-794-4050.
$11.4 Million Construction

Project at VHS South
New Jersey Schools Development
Authority (SDA) CEO Charles McKenna
joined local and district officials to tour the
construction of a significant emergent repair
project at the Vineland High School South.
Despite the diligent and proper maintenance efforts of the District over the years,
the aging HVAC system required replacement in order to provide students with a
comfortable learning environment, said

SDA CEO Charles McKenna. The new hot
water based system will be more efficient,
provide proper heat and improve the overall air quality for students. The SDA appreciates the productive partnership we have
enjoyed with Vineland Public Schools as
we have advanced this project.
A general construction contract in the
amount of $8.6 million was awarded to
Falasca Mechanical, Inc. of Vineland, to
complete the work. The emergent project
will address improvements to the HVAC
system and components. Work includes the
removal of three steam boilers and associated piping, pumps and equipment; installation of a new hot water distribution sys-
tem including boilers, water source heat

pumps and associated equipment; and the
installation of a pneumatic control system
and building management system.
The project is anticipated for completion in October 2016. Construction work
will be phased throughout the school year
to minimize any disruption to student
learning. The total estimated project cost is
$11.4 million. Built in 1963, Vineland High
South is a 231,000-square-foot facility educating 1,300 students in grades 9 through 12.
We are so excited to see this project
come to fruition, said Dr. Mary L. Gruccio,
Vineland Public Schools Superintendent.
We have waited a long time for this and
we are grateful to the SDA for their financial support especially in such a difficult
economic environment. The staff and students will be very excited when this project
is completed.
Emergent projects are those deemed
necessary by the Department of Education
in SDA Districts due to potential health and
safety issues. The Emergent Project
Program provides assistance to SDA
District school facilities in need of repair
and rehabilitation. Emergent projects
address water infiltration issues and
include the repair or replacement of roofs,
windows, exterior masonry, heating and
cooling systems, plumbing, electrical,
mechanical and security systems.
The SDA is also advancing the construction of a new middle school in Vineland,
estimated at $49.4 million. To date, the SDA
has invested nearly $140 million in completed projects in Vineland alone, including
five capital projects (Pauline J. Petway
Elementary School, Thomas W. Wallace, Jr.
Middle School, Edward R. Johnstone
School, Landis Intermediate School and
Veterans Memorial Intermediate School),
one demonstration project (Gloria M.
Sabater Elementary School) and 14 health
and safety/grant/emergent projects.
The SDAs current portfolio of active
projects is valued at more than $2 billion
including the Capital Project Portfolio,
emergent projects and Regular Operating
District grants. SDA currently has 13
Capital school facilities projects in active
construction.
Repair Plans Offered to Landis

Sewerage Authority Customers

New Board Members of County

Women's Hall of Fame
Three new members have been appointed to the Board of Directors of the
Womens Hall of Fame. They are Dr. Keith
C. Figgs and Dr. Charles Valentine of
Vineland, and Gary Moellers of Pittsgrove.
Dr. Figgs is former assistant superintendent for Administration in the Vineland
School District. Now retired from a career
in education that spanned 40 years, Figgs
currently works for the Foundation for
Education Administration as a mentor for
new administrators in the New Jersey
Leaders to Leaders Program. He was
inducted into the Cumberland County
Black Hall of Fame in 2013.
Gary Moellers is a human resources

professional who has been employed for
26 years at the Guidance Center in
Millville, where he began working as a
case manager in the homeless program,
and he now serves as Director of
Community Services. Prior to his tenure
at the Guidance Center, he worked in the
field of development disabilities, coordinating services, writing programs and
supervising group home projects in South
Jersey and Philadelphia. He is a devoted
volunteer with Boy Scouts of America.
Dr. Valentine is a long-time educator in
the Vineland Public Schools, serving as a
teacher, principal, director, assistant superintendent, and superintendent. He retired
in 1997 after 41 years with the school district and has devoted much of his time to
volunteer work with many local service
organizations.
We are very happy to welcome these
three gentlemen to the Board, said Louise
T. Bertacchi, founder and chair of the Hall
Board of Directors. They will all bring fresh
perspective and creativity to our mission.
The Cumberland County Womens Hall
of Fame honors local women of outstanding achievement who have made significant
contributions to a profession, the community and/or womens issues. Thirty-seven
women have been inducted into the Hall
since its founding in 2007.

Pascale Sykes Foundation Announces

$10 Million Economic Development Initiative
he Pascale Sykes Foundation announced last
Thursday (July 30) that it is creating a multimillion dollar South Jersey Economic Initiative
(SJEI) that will be invested in economic development projects in Cumberland, Salem, Gloucester,
and western Atlantic Counties.
The Economic Initiative will involve promoting
the establishment and growth of businesses and
also promoting assets of the four-county area. The
Economic Initiative will complement county and
state economic plans.
New Jersey Community Capital (NJCC) will manage business establishment and expansion. NJCC
is a Community Development Financial Institution,
or not-for-profit investment group specializing projects that benefit communities.
The Foundation also unveiled Phase I of its effort
to promote assets of the four-county area under the
banner of New Jerseys Heartland.
Atlantic City-based Masterpiece Advertising has
been selected to roll out Phase I of the destination
marketing program.
The announcement of the initiatives was made
by Foundation President Frances P. Sykes during the
Foundations Report to Partners, which was held
at the offices of the Cumberland County
Improvement Authority in Millville.
Pascale Sykes Foundation, located in Vineland,
has been active in the four counties since 2010 and,
as of today, has invested more than $17 million in its
work in South Jersey, which is conducted under the
banner of the Strengthening Families Initiative.
Explaining the Foundations mission, Sykes said
We support the independence, integrity, and wellbeing of working, low-income families, those missed
by the safety net, those trying to do the right things
to become self-sufficient.
We believe that families need a steady source of
income and healthy, vibrant communities in which
to live and work. We also believe that the basic support of family self-sufficiency is jobs, she added.
Discussing the selection of the four counties, Sykes
explained that Cumberland, Salem, and western
Atlantic have the most potential due to their unappreciated and undervalued assets and Gloucester County
is routinely joined with Salem and Cumberland in
the work of social service organizations.
Sykes was joined in the announcement by the
Foundations Executive Director Colleen Maguire;
Wayne Meyer, the President of NJCC; and Phyllis
Lacca, the President of Masterpiece Advertising.
As part of the SJEI effort, the Pascale Sykes
Foundation has partnered with New Jersey
Community Capital (NJCC), a nonprofit community
development financial institution, which will deploy
flexible, affordable capital and capacity building
assistance to generate quality jobs and improve
economic development in the region through its
THRIVE South Jersey program.
We are thrilled to partner with the Pascale
Sykes Foundation on this important initiative, said
Wayne T. Meyer, President of NJCC. Creating quality job opportunities and strengthening residents
connections to these opportunities will go a long
way toward making South Jersey thrive.
THRIVE provides: (1) flexible financing products
to support eligible small businesses and job-creating projects, and (2) capacity building support to
strengthen the linkages between local residents and
quality job opportunities.
THRIVE will finance nonprofit and for-profit
organizations involved in projects that create quality

Network opened its first urgent
care center in Cumberland
County. The new facility gives the community access to treatment for a wide
range of minor or non-life threatening
conditions when their doctor is not available or their condition does not require
the life-saving services of a hospital emergency room.
Inspira Urgent Care Vineland, located
at 1297 W. Landis Ave. (next to ShopRite
and across the street from Walmart), features a warm and welcoming reception
area, numerous patient exam rooms, and
imaging services on site. The Vineland
Urgent Care Center also includes an office
for its Occupational Health and Wellness
services. Additionally, every patient at
Inspiras urgent care centers is treated by
a physician.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on
Thursday of last week and was attended
by dozens of local dignitaries and business
leaders as well as Inspira executives and
staff members.
The Vineland Urgent Care Center is
the fifth to open within Inspiras Health
Network, though all four of the networks
other Urgent Care Centers are located
outside of Cumberland County.
All of Inspiras Urgent Care centers
(including the new Vineland location) are
open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

in November 2012 by the merger of South

$40,000 towards its operating budget, creation and promotion of public art projects,
and collaborative art programs with other
non-profit or educational entities.
Additionally, the NJ State Council on
the Arts announced their grant awards last
week. Millville Development Corporation
was awarded $28,496 for general program
support.
The corporation manages the Glasstown

Arts District. The board of directors, committees and executive director work on
economic development, events, public relations and promotions, art education and a
wide range of public art projects.
The grants are the life-blood of the
organization. The Dodge Foundation and
NJ State Council on the Arts have been
supporting the efforts of the arts and the
downtown revitalization efforts for several

Vineland 8-Year-Old Qualifies

for Junior Olympics
A newcomer to the sport of track and field,
Kaitlynn Kenna of Vineland, has wasted no time
making her mark. This feisty 8-year-old began
running track just five months ago and has
raced her way up the ranks in record time. A
member of the Omega Track Club in
Sicklerville, NJ, Kenna competed in the
American Athletic Union (AAU) Mid-Atlantic
District Qualifier held at Stockton University in
June. She finished 5th in both the 400 and 800
meter races, qualifying her for Regionals. Kenna
placed 5th in the 800 meter race, qualifying her

About 80 teams from all over the country took part, making it the ultimate
opportunity for Vineland.
I think its more [about] having fun and bonding. Its not about winning the
National Championship. it would take almost a miracle to do that. Were just
looking to have a good time, and play some competitive teams from all around
the country, the teams manager, Kevin Williams, told SNJ Todays Mike Frankel.
Its unbelievable. I never would have expected this to happen. Its truly
amazing, said Emma Barbera, Tsunami infielder.
I mean, were all sisters. on and off the field. and this is honestly my life,
added Nicole Ortega, Tsunami pitcher.

national level, Dr. Brooks currently holds appointments on the Joint Policy
Committee and Education Board of the American Public Health Association.
Dr. Brooks has been recognized by numerous state and local organizations for
excellence in community service and outreach. She has published extensively
and has served as the principal investigator on grants and contracts funded by
the National Cancer Institute, the Social Innovation Fund, and local and state
agencies to advance initiatives focused on reducing health disparities and
improving health services delivery.

Cumberland 4-H Volunteer Training: August 11

Cumberland County 4-H will hold a training for prospective 4-H volunteers
on August 11th at 7 p.m. at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Center, 291
Morton Avenue in Rosenhayn. Adult alumni of the Cumberland County 4-H
program, ages 21 and over, are encouraged to come out and reconnect with

Cumberland County is home to one of the most vibrant 4-H club programs
in the garden state, with clubs working in project areas such as robotics, herpetology, lifeskills, marine science, beekeeping, arts & crafts, leadership,
cooking and traditional 4-H animal science programs such as horse, livestock
and small animals.
In order to sustain and grow our program, we need the investment of caring adults who are interested in supporting our youth. 4-H alumni are ideally
suited to assist in growing the program. explains County 4-H Agent Julie
Karavan. Traditionally, we think of 4-H volunteers as 4-H club leaders who
make a commitment to lead a club which meets once per month. However,
4-H also needs screened, trained volunteers to assist periodically in other
roles as well, including advisors, judges, project leaders, program delivery,
chaperones and speakers.
The Cumberland County 4-H program hopes to establish community
clubs, working in a range of project areas at locations in the county beyond
the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Center in Rosenhayn.

The Automobile
Movie Theatre
The idea for the first open-air cinema came to
Hollingshead while watching a film at home.

may not be immediately recognizable. His father was born in
Millville in 1870, but the
younger Hollingshead would come to be
associated with Camden County. The particular location could fit up to 400 cars on
its property on any evening so the passengers could watch a movie outdoors.
Dubbed The Automobile Movie Theatre, it
was the first of its kind in the world when
it opened on June 6, 1933. The term drivein had yet to be coined.
According to Harry M. Potters South
Jersey Magazine article, The Worlds First
Drive-In Theatre, the history of The
Automobile Movie Theatre has undergone
a bit of revision over the years so that there
is confusion over its whereabouts. Based
on what has been written, many people
believe that this cinema center was located
in Camden on Admiral Wilson Boulevard.
These are in error as only that portion
of Crescent Boulevard which lies within
the limits of Camden City is officially
named Admiral Wilson Boulevard, Potter
writes. From the city line to the Airport
Circle it becomes part of Crescent
Boulevard in Pennsauken Township and as
the theater was just over the line, and in
the township, it is correct to say it was on
Crescent Boulevard.
Potter reports that the setting of the
theater included inclined grades that
housed seven rows of parking from which
patrons had a clear view of the 60-foot
stage and screen. Guardrails at the front
were low enough for car bumpers to clear
so that the cars tires were what rested
against the rails. There were also 200
trees planted along the theaters perimeter, providing the setting with a less-thanurban look.
The theatre was also equipped with
RCA directional speakers. According to
Potter, the company had been experimenting on such equipment and announced its
breakthrough almost simultaneously
with the theaters patent announcement.
The system allowed passengers parked in
the back of the theater to hear the soundtrack as clearly as those in the first rows.
The idea for such a theater originated
with Richard M. Hollingshead, Jr. When
Potter interviewed Hollingshead for his

article, the writer discovered that the idea
of open-air movies came to [Hollingshead]
while watching a film at home. He told
how he mounted a large screen in his
driveway, placed the projector on top of
the car and he and his family sat in openair comfort while seeing the film. He also
experimented with a lawn sprinkler to
determine if the film could be seen even
though the windshield was wet as though
with rain.
Hollingshead also told Potter there
were practical reasons for an open-air theater. The drive-in idea virtually transformed an ordinary motor car into a private theater box, Hollingshead said. He
explained that smokers did not enjoy
watching a movie in theaters because
smoking was prohibited, but at his cinema
they could smoke without offending others. The same was true if families chose
to discuss the movie while watching it.
Hollingshead said that while young moviegoers were not allowed to attend evening
screenings without a parent, they could
attend a drive-in under the watchful eyes
of their entire family. And the aged and
infirm didnt have to worry about standing
in line at an open-air theater.
But as Potter points out, the drive-in
appeared at the height of the depression
and the idea that an entire family could go
to a motion picture show at a total cost of
$1 was most attractive. No wonder that
thousands of drive-ins soon sprang up
around the country
Hollingshead, president of the R.M.
Hollingshead Corp., which produced
WHIZ automotive products, spent years
on his plan to introduce the world to an
open-air cinema. When his patent
approval came through on May 16, 1933, he
had the theater built in less than a month,
hiring out-of-work laborers in Pennsauken
Township. That decision meant a run-in
with union labor, but despite several altercations, the work was completed in time
for a June 6 opening.
Today, the few drive-ins left in the
country open before June, stream the
soundtrack to your car radio and use
digital projection. But they still carry on
an 82-year tradition. I

Street New Jerseys Branding &
Digital Design Services Grant
and how we were the first awardee out of
two Main Street districts in the state eligible to receive over $30,000 of branding
services at no cost to us. Well, the good
news just keeps on coming! A mini-version of this program is now being made
available for downtown businesses.
The Business Branding & Digital
Design Service (a.k.a. Business Bootcamp)
is being rolled out to 18 Main Street
Districts statewide, including ours, and
were making it available to two to five
downtown Vineland businesses. With this
program, businesses will get the benefits
of a consultant contracted by Main Street
New JerseyMoon & Star of Rahway,
NJand will get assistance with such

valuable businesses tools as a logo/tagline,
business card design, postcard design for
retail or service businesses, menu design
for eateries, a single web page, an e-mail
marketing template and signature, digital
faade design, and sign design. Businesses
can either take advantage of the whole
array of Bootcamp services or pick the
services they want or need.
Heres some addition value. If you as a
business owner went to a consultant to get
these services, you would have to pay
between $2,000 and $4,000 for this array
of services. The grant allows the business
owner to get all this invaluable advise and
guidance FREE!! Also, we know that the
business owners time is valuable and we
want you to be able to reap the benefits of
this program as soon as possible. Thats
why Main Street New Jersey designed this

program to be relatively shortonly one
to two weeks per business.
We have an application that the business owner needs to complete and, since
only a limited number of businesses will
be chosen for this, businesses should get
in their application quickly, so we can look
them over and choose wholl be the lucky
ones to receive this valuable help. Just call

This is a key component of what our
Main Street program is all aboutnot only
looking to rebrand and get new businesses
for the future, but to help our established
businesses to be able to market themselves better. This two-pronged approach

Southern New Jersey (UWGPSNJ) will
invest $50,000 in New Jerseys non-emergency helpline NJ211 to ensure local residents impacted by layoffs and casino closings make the connection to help.
The $50,000 investment made through
United Ways Impact Fund will fill a critical
need as unemployment benefits are
exhausted and an estimated 5,500 residents, according to the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, seek
alternatives. NJ211 will serve as the crucial first call in linking residents to local
agencies who are working to coordinate services in order to help more residents.
The call specialist will be available over the next 10 months and work exclusively
with individuals and families impacted by the casino closures and business layoffs.
Additionally, agencies will be focused on serving municipalities surrounding
Atlantic City, where approximately 73 percent of laid off workers reside, as reported
by Casino Control Commission, Regulatory Affairs Division.

When Rotary District 7640 received a grant to

cover the cost of a new playground set at the
Cumberland Family Shelter, Vineland Rotarians
volunteered to help bring the project to life.
Together with Chris Smaniotto from the shelter,
Vineland Rotary members Gus Foster, Ed Morvay,
Kevin Bernhardt, and Bonni Blarcom spent a
recent Saturday constructing a playground for
the children who reside at the family shelter.
"This is what community service is all about,"
said Bernhardt. "We roll up our sleeves and do
whatever it takes to help area residents in need. At the end of the day, we leave
knowing that we made a real difference in the lives of some very special kids."
The Cumberland Family Shelter, located on Mays Landing Road in Vineland, provides shelter for homeless men, women and families. Residents receive bus service
and three meals a day, along with clothing and employment assistance. The shelter
recently added a second building and bus shelters with help from Redeemer
Lutheran Church of Vineland. Church members, led by Ed Morvay, donated over
1,250 volunteer hours and raised $27,000 for the purchase of building materials.

McNiss Earns Municipal Coordinator Award

Michael McNiss, Recycling Coordinator and Code
Enforcement Officer for the City of Millville, has received the
Municipal Coordinator Award from the New Jersey Clean
Communities Council (NJCCC), a statewide, comprehensive
program to reduce litter, promote volunteer clean-up of public
lands and sustain a reduction in litter through education.
McNiss has been involved with NJCCC for about eight years,
and has worked in the City of Millville for 19 years. His job is to
enforce the municipal codes in solid waste and recycling.
NJCC Executive Director Sandy Huber said the organization cannot achieve its
goals without the commitment of municipal partners who fully understand and
enforce local ordinances.
Mike works tirelessly to ensure Millville residents and businesses are well
informed about all things recycling, Huber said. We are proud to honor all of the
hard work that Mike has done to help make the City of Millville litter-free.

and arts programs. Holmes replaces
singer Lorna Luft, who will not appear due
to a medical issue.
Holmes launched his career in 1973
with Playground in My Mind, which hit
#2 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. An
Atlantic City favorite for decades, Holmes
has frequently headlined numerous casino hotel showrooms.
This multi-dimensional entertainer easily transitions between live concerts, television and the theater with a warm, welcoming style that audiences love. Holmes is as
comfortable performing in large showrooms, backed by prominent orchestras, as he is
singing in intimate New York City cabaret clubs. His playlist includes Great American
Songbook selections from Frank Sinatras repertoire, plus contemporary classics, jazz
and opera.
Holmes is a talented professional singer but is also a skilled writer and composer.
He has co-written the musicals "Comfortable Shoes" and "Just Another Man" with several of the music industry's most respected contemporary lyricists and
composers/arrangers. Holmes appreciates timeless music legends and has performed
tribute shows dedicated to the music of Cole Porter, Paul Simon and New York City
cabaret pianist/singer Bobby Short.
Through his music, Holmes honors his parents' musical talents. His father is a jazz
musician and his mother is a classically trained opera singer in England. Holmes says,
"I learned to sing correctly from my mother and how to enjoy it from my father."
Although Holmes claims he prefers performing before a live audience, he has also
been a popular television personality. Holmes served as sidekick/announcer for Joan
Rivers on "The Late Show" and as the music feature and event correspondent for
"Entertainment Tonight." He hosted his own Emmy award-winning talk/variety show
and PBS public television aired his 2006 live performances at the Clint Holmes
Theater at Harrah's in Las Vegas.
A Las Vegas resident, Holmes is a favorite around the city. He has won multiple
entertainer/singer awards from publications like the Las Vegas Review Journal and Las
Vegas Life Magazine.
Holmes has also immersed himself in multiple community charitable causes. As a
colon cancer survivor, he is a spokesman for the American Cancer Society. Holmes
also mentors young aspiring entertainers at the Las Vegas Academy of the Performing
Arts. In 2005, Holmes founded the Clint Holmes Foundation for the Performing Arts,
which sponsors children in art and music programs throughout the Clark County
School District.

Richard C. Rich Panczyszyn, 68, of

Millville recently died at home unexpectedly. Rich graduated from Millville
Senior High, Class of 1965. He was
inducted into the Millville Thunderbolt
Hall of Fame in 2006. Rich is survived
by his mother Mrs. Virginia Panczyszyn;
brother Frank T. Jr. (Tracy); dear friend
Babs Bennett; very close friend and
cousin Harry Schwegel; niece Stephanie
Watkins; nephew Ted Panczyszyn; two
grandnephews Tyler and Collin; grandniece Taylor and many cousins aunt and
uncles. Rich was predeceased by his
father, Frank T. Sr.
William A. Gebhardt, 89 of Millville died
July 25, at the Eagleview Nursing Home,
Elmer, after an extended illness. During
WWII, he served in the U.S. Army Air
Corp. He was called back to serve in the
Air Force during the Korean Conflict and
retired after 40 years of service as a
Colonel. Mr. Gebhardt is survived by his
wife Dolores (Fisher) Gebhardt; son
Bruce William Gebhardt and wife Lauren
of Haverstraw, NY; stepdaughter Pat
Hayes and husband Bill of Vineland; six
grandchildren, Dale Gebhardt of
Washington, D.C., Alix Gebhardt of NYC,
NY, Kathleen Garrison of Port Elizabeth,
Suzie Dalgleish and husband Gary of
Millville, Shelley Spears and husband
Josh of Texas, and David Hayes of N. C.;
and four great-grandchildren, Connor and

Nina (Poduslenko) Matichen, 84, of
Vineland, passed away on July 26, at
home. She was born in Russia and
immigrated to the United States. Nina
was a long time member of the Holy
Trinity Russian Orthodox Church. She is
survived by three daughters Olga Yerkes,
Nina Julie Raimonde (Rich) and Tania
Creamer (Tim); sister Anna; grandchildren Jonathon, Mike, Katherine, Philip,
Dimitri, Alek, Matthew, Mandi and Jenni;
and great grandson Michael. Mrs.
Matichen was predeceased by husband
Mike; daughter: Mary Pierce and grandson, Joseph Pierce, Jr.; brothers:
Vladimir, Nick and John; sisters: Tania,
Katherine and Marfa.
Robert Edwin Sampson Jr., 64, of Millville,
was called to his heavenly home on July
27. He worked as a Vice President of
Government Affairs for Interstate Realty
Management Company for 34 years. He
and his wife, Sharon, owned and operated Real Property Technology Group, LLC
for 23 years and he and his son, Robert
III, owned and operated LSC Golf Carts,
LLC for four years. Robert is survived by
his wife, Sharon S. (Smith), of 40 years,
son, Robert E. Sampson III, daughter, Lori
Renee (Chuck) Sturgis, triplet grandchildren, Julianna, Charles and Lilianna, all
residents of Millville, NJ, sister, Sandra K.
(Eric) Hardy of London, Ontario, brother
D. Timothy (Juanita) Sampson of Bonsall,
CA, mother-in-law, Sue Smith, brother-inlaws, Robert Smith, Howard Smith, Frank
Smith, Larry (Priscilla) Smith, sister-inlaws, Debra Gibson, Connie (John)
Tiptjew and several uncles, aunts,
cousins, nieces and nephews.
Joseph Sonny DiPasquale, 62 of
Millville, passed away at home with his
loving wife by his side on July 27, after a
battle with melanoma. Sonny was born
in Millville and graduated from Millville
High School, Class of 1971. He was selfemployed as a home improvement contractor. Sonny was member of the
Millville Elks Lodge #580, Millville
Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #1836
and the Loyal Order of Moose Millville
Lodge #2488. Sonny was a firefighter in
the Carmel Fire Department and also a
member of the Fire Police. Sonny
enjoyed playing music and being a member of the bands, Within Reality and
Friends. Sonny is survived by his wife:
Charlotte (Birmingham); granddaughter
Abbey Rose Kline; sister Joanne Bolton
(Bill); brother Mark (Theresa); several
nieces, nephews and many friends.
John H Bailey, Jr., went home to be with
the Lord on July 28, while with loved
ones. He was a veteran of the United
States Navy during the Korean War. He
married Carolyn Purnell and moved to NJ
in 1971 where he continued to work in the
trade as a bricklayer. He leaves behind his
wife of 50 years Carolyn Purnell Bailey,
four children John Bailey, III of Atlanta,
GA, Carl Jason Bailey and Charlotte
Bailey of Vinelan, and Amissa Riley of
Glassboro, NJ. He also leaves behind
eight siblings Joe Bailey of Atlanta, GA,
Matthew Bailey of Charlotte, NC, Lester
Bailey of Pleasantville, NJ, Arger Lee
Bailey of Charlotte, NC., Helen Bonelli of
Neptune, NJ, Barbaran Sanders, Pricilla
Blakney, Diane Barrier, all of Charlotte,
NC., six grandchildren Christopher Bailey,
Darnell Bailey, Shareda Brown, Dandre
Bailey, Donte Bailey, and Nateesha Evans,
and eight great grandchildren.

ou see the stream of serial headlines in one newspaper and want

to chuck the white-and-black
news sheets into the nearest
trashcan. You no longer understand the
world; your backyard is becoming just as
foreign economically, politically, and socially as the world. Everyone has an opinion
that they dont know how to act on. For all
their finely formulated treatises and financial plans, people are scaredscared of failure, scared of struggle, scared of becoming
part of the problem and realizing there are
no solutions. The world seems very bleak
when the human capacity for hope is
stamped out with intimidation and fear.
And so we look for intangibles; these glass
half-filled buzzwordsfriendship, family,
and love. Three and half years ago, that was
what I went looking for.
As a post-graduate forced to move back
home due in part to a declining job market,
I was out of money and left to piece my life
together with no instruction on what to
expect outside of my academic fallout
shelter. For two years I worked at various
customer service jobs; and it was only after
receiving a phone call from my alma mater,

that I was made aware of our countys
Habitat for Humanity affiliate. The chain
of events that followed that introduction to
being hired as an employee, exceed the
word count of this article. Suffice to say, it
just clicked.
Soon after, there developed all these
expectations of what I would learn, the
software I would come to recognize, and
general skills I may have been in possession of were earmarked to get a brand new
coat of confidence. Incidentally, that
turned out being only 30 percent of my
overall takeaway. Seventy percent of my
time at Cumberland County Habitat for
Humanity was spent, not learning about
myself (plot twist), but learning from and
about people.
The non-profit sector can bring out the
best and worst of humanity. Individuals
take up a hammer in the name of Habitat
for a variety of reasons, and those motives
over time are strengthened, weakened,
warped, or just plain broken. Funding and
financial budgetinga necessary vice.
There will never be enough money, private
or governmental, to go around. You are
forced to reconcile with yourself that a singular decision can only cater to so many
individuals.
Whenever those aspects loomed heavy,
Id look to our past and present partner
families; our project manager Joe Santini;
our dedicated volunteers, or Die-Hards as
I call them; our board of directors; the

businesses who donate to us; the schools

that advocate for us; the companies that
volunteer with us; the contractors that
assist us; the organizations that support us;
the colleges that travel to us; and the
spearhead of it all, our executive director
Robert Scarpa. All from different backgrounds with personalized stories, but
connected by a common perogativeto
empathize.
I believe this article was meant to be a
retrospective of my time at Habitat, since I
will be leaving at the end of August to pursue graduate studiesand in a way it is.
My time at Habitat was spent with people,
with some of the most humble and fiercely
compassionate people I have had the privilege to meet. We footed each others ladders, stabilized each others studs, donated
and sponsored each others charity
eventsall for the general well-being of
the collective. CCHFH was the unabashed
and all-encompassing airport greeting I
needed after my undergraduate journey. It
was a consuming love affair.
I only hope everyone is as lucky as I have
been to have a job, at least once, that surprises you with the goodness humanity is
capable of, and in a position to do. A place
filled with individuals that expose you to
aspects of the human heart that you had lost
faith in. My time as CCHFHs administrative assistant, for me, has made todays,
tomorrows, and the proceeding years
headlines a little more bearable to read, and
the world slightly less bleak. I

homeowners in parts of
Cumberland County to know about
a state-funded program that offers
a limited number of deferred nointerest loans for major home
repairs.
The Small Cities Home Owner
Rehabilitation Program is made
possible by a $150,000 grant from
the NJ Department of Community
Affairs. The money is intended to
assist low and moderate income
homeowners with code related
items and weatherization including
electric, plumbing, heating, roofing,
structural issues, windows and
other problem areas.
Eligibility is based primarily on
income and in which municipality.
With the tough economic times
that many are facing, we know
these loans can make a big difference for residents who need to
make critical repairs to keep their
families safe and sheltered, but just
cant afford the repairs right now,
said Freeholder Director Joe
Derella.
Under the deferred loan program, there is no interest added
and no monthly payments are
required. Instead the loans are
secured by a mortgage note held
by the county. Under most circumstances, when the deed of the
property is transferred from the
original applicant, the loan is repaid
to the county.
The grant is being administered
for the county by Triad Associates.
Interested county homeowners who
want to check their eligibility, fill
out an application, or have questions about the program should call
