Grade Level: 10
Subject: Health
Required Materials: Internet and database resources, PowerPoint

Duration: Lesson 1 class period, research 2 class periods

Skills: 1.1.8 Demonstrate mastery of technology tools to accessing information
and pursuing inquiry.
Responsibilities: Respect copyright/intellectual property rights of creators
and producers.
Standard 2: Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new
situations, and create new knowledge.
Skills: Use technology and other information tools to analyze and organize
information.

Anticipatory Set:
Show the class a series of photos of famous celebrities and ask what they all have in
common.

Objective:
After completing the lesson, the student will be able to identify and use credible
resources for completing their research for their project.

Instructional Input:
• Ask students if they know a celebrity offhand that falls under this category
• Introduction to project and oral presentation should include:
o Introduction – who is the celebrity and why are they famous
o Background info should include childhood like, where and when they
grew up, neighborhood (poor, affluent, rough), family situation and any
early indicators of later drug use.
o Celebrities’ accomplishments
o Drug info – which drug did them in, street name, what the drug looks like,
how it is taken, physiologically and psychological effects, short and long
term effects and current statistics.
o The fall – celebrity’s intro to drug, use and abuse of drug. Did they lose
their wealth, dignity, life? Try rehab, arrested, hospitalized?
o Conclusion – sum up all you have read.
• You will include a total of 7 sources but you are not to hand in a bibliography.
You will use the sources in your oral presentation by saying “according to…” or
“base on information from…”.
• Explain that they are creating 2 slides and 1 poster for their project:
o First slide must include name of celebrity, dates of birth and indicate date
of death or if they are still alive.
o Second slide will include info on drug
o Third slide can be a poster/picture. You may do a poster by hand. No
smaller than 8.5 X 11.
• Give example of what is expected. I will do River Phoenix presentation.
• Hand out the rubric for students to check off every time they see/hear me
complete a section.
• Show the students where to find the resources for their research. I will show them
using SB how to navigate to the JHS Health webpage and access the resources
listed.
• I will first show the class a wikipedia “List of drug-related deaths”.
• Review list with students. Ask if anyone has a particular interest in a celebrity.
Have students pick the person that they would like to research.

Modeling
• Show the class on SB where to find the resources. Demonstrate the presentation.

Checking for Understanding


• Walk around the room to check that students are doing correctly.

Independent Practice
• Students will go to computers, access website and pick a celebrity to research.

Closure
Next class we will review the sources for your research.
