Thisisafirstcourseonthetheoryandapplicationsofnumericalapproximation
techniques.Throughthestudyofthismodule,thestudentswillgainan
understandingofhowinpracticemathematicallyformulatedproblemsare
solvedusingcomputers,andhowcomputationalerrorsareanalysedand
tackled.Thestudentswillbeequippedwithanumberofcommonlyused
numericalalgorithmsandknowledgeandskillinperformingnumerical
computationusingMATLAB.Themoduleisintendedformathematicsmajors
andstudentsfromengineeringandphysicalsciences.Itwillprovideafirm
basisforfuturestudyofnumericalanalysisandscientificcomputing.Major
topics:Computationalerrors,directmethodforsystemsoflinearequations,
interpolationandapproximation,numericalintegration,useofMATLAB
software.
