1.0 Chapter Overview

This chapter is entry to the overall background of research of the
habits of surfing internet of UEL student and what the factors
determine them.

1.1 Introduction
The purpose of this assignment is about what the factors that
determines the UEL students on the internet surfing habits.
Nowadays, the internet is a global system of the interrelated
computer networks. On the other hand, the internet is now a
means by which the digital divide between the developed and
developing countries are gradually closing up (Ofodu Graceful
Onovughe, 2012). Research has established the fact that the most
conspicuous

users

of

the

Internet

are

adolescents

and

undergraduates (Kausar& Zobia, 2006; Omotayo, 2006; Ofodu,

2012).

For the education fields, the internet can be act as a

dynamic platform for every people in the world to provide and share
the source of information. So, it is fast and easy way for student to
get the latest information in anytime and anywhere just through a
click. With an internet, students no need wasting more time stay in
library for the books. Nowadays, every student also has an advance
technology such as the mobile smartphone, i-pad, and so on. These
advanced

technology

tools

also

help

them

to

make

communication, searching information, making payment and so on

just through on internet. Thus, internet now has become a life of
part of the student.

1.2 Statement of Problem

The reason of doing this assignment is to study the factors
determine the UEL students on the internet surfing habits. Besides,
U 1150417

Page 2

BA (Hons) International Business HR3010 RESEARCHING IN BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

this study also tends to understanding about how the UEL students
manage and spend their time on internet.

1.3 Research Questions

1. Are the UEL students social life has been influence by the
internet?
2. How much time do the UEL students spent on internet
activities?
3. What are the purposes of UEL students engaging in internet
activities?

1.4 Research Objectives

1. To observe how internet has influence the social life of UEL
students.
2. To identify the internet influence UEL students spent time
on internet activities.
3. To understand the purposes of UEL students engaging in
internet activities.

1.5 Significance of the Study

When conduct this assignment, it can gets a lot of useful
information which can find out the outcome by conduct the
quantitative

method

(questionnaire)

and

qualitative

method

(interview or focus group observation) (Saunders. et.al, 2007).

Allocating the questionnaire and conducting the interview are able
to find out more information on the data that has collect to make
the data analysis.

1.6 Limitations of the Study

U 1150417

Page 4

BA (Hons) International Business HR3010 RESEARCHING IN BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

These have a lot of the limitations when doing this research. When
distributing the questionnaire to students, some of them are
reluctant to answer the questionnaire or leave some question in the
questionnaire. Besides, some students are giving the answers that
are not related to the question. This will make me difficult to
analysis the information on the data. On the other hand, doing the
data analysis from the Microsoft Excel on pie chart must be avoiding
more than six segments. This is because according to the Morris,
2003 stated that for numerical and some categorical data you will
need to group data prior to drawing the pie chart, as it is difficult to
interpret pie charts with more than six segments.

3.0 Introduction
This chapter shows the methodology of research. Research can be
defined as a detailed study of a subject, especially in order to
discover information or reach an understanding. (Cambridge
University Press 2003). This are mostly would be focus on how to
carry out the data analysis by using to this assignment.

3.1 Population
Using the population allocation from the sampling methods, thirty
UEL students were randomly selected from the UEL degree program
at programme in Stamford College Petaling Jaya and Stamford
College Malacca from different stratum based on gender, region and
faculty. It will be focus on the group of the BAIB and BAM students in
Stamford College Petaling Jaya. Besides that, this will be focus on
the group of the BAIB students on Stamford College Malacca. This is
because Stamford College Petaling Jaya just more was taking the
two of UEL programme (BAIB and BAM) and Stamford College
Malacca just taking one programme (BAIB). On this research, this
will

be

conducted

thirty

respondents

to

participate

in

the

questionnaire and six respondents were chosen for interview.

3.2 Sampling
Sample of this study was as given below:
-Students that pursuing Bachelor of Arts (Hons) International
Business at Stamford College, Petaling Jaya and Malacca.
-Students that pursuing Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Marketing at
Stamford College, Petaling Jaya.

U 1150417

Page 9

BA (Hons) International Business HR3010 RESEARCHING IN BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

Due to the limitation of numbers, the respondents were chosen by

using simple random sampling and there are thirty respondents for
questionnaires and six respondents for interview section.

3.3 Research Instruments

This research instruments are needs two different data collection
methods. They is quantitative (or numerical) (Berman Brown and
Saunders, 2008) and qualitative (or nun-numerical) methods. This
both data collection methods are able to provide researcher a
reliable result to show it is relevant to the research question.
On the other hand, this research also needs the descriptive statistics
to represent data graph. The purpose of descriptive statistics is
organise and to summarise the data information. So, research will
chose Microsoft Excel to analysis the data information based on the
quantitative and qualitative such as graph, bar chart, pie chart and
more.

Quantitative method Questionnaire

The research that chose the quantitative method to collect the data
information from UEL students at Stamford College is questionnaire.
It was easy, fast and needed respondent to take five minutes to fill
in the entire blank in questionnaire. The response of information
could be process and analysis it into clear data.

Qualitative method - Interview

Interview can be defined as a qualitative method. It is conducted

with six interviewees and one interviewer. They can have an
interlocution face to face and this is one of the easier ways to get
more detail answers. But, this was save more time because can
direct and get more opinion from the interviewees to responds. This
U 1150417

Page 10

BA (Hons) International Business HR3010 RESEARCHING IN BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

method also can save budget because not need use so many
resources compared to the questionnaire. The researcher was
chosen three local students and three international students for
interview section. This is because the opinion of the local students
and international students thinking are different due to the different
culture.

3.4 Data Collection

Thirty sets of questionnaire have been given out and all collect back
while six UEL students having interview session and they need to
answer four questions. Though, all of the four questions have been
answering.
3.5 Data Analysis
After collecting all the data information, it will be going on the graph
or pie chart. The data information also calculated as it can find out
minimum,

maximum,

average,

mode,

median

and

standard

deviation. Yin (2003) suggests that, where you have made use of
existing theory to formulate your research question and objectives,
you may also use the theoretical propositions that you do this as a
means to devise a framework to help you to organise and direct
your data analysis. Furthermore, the interview data that carry out
with respondents also will analysis out.

3.6 The demographically details

BAM students only one for each. Majorities of UEL students answer
the questionnaire are come from Malaysia. There still have other
non-Malaysian students that are come from China. Furthermore,
there have on Nigeria and Sudan students. But for BAM students,
there does not have any non-Malaysia to respond.

4.2 Factors determine of UEL students on internet surfing habits.

This part is need to analysis and identifying what the factors
determine of UEL students on internet surfing habits on research
objective. To observe how internet has influence the social life of
UEL students.
The big factors determine them on internet surfing habits is because
of all the UEL students have gadget or mobile phone and have own
personal computer or laptop. Furthermore, on the chart 2 below
shows that all the things are buy from parents (83 per cent) and 17
per cent is buy form self. So, this was the issues determine the UEL

4.3 Interviews Research
This interview has been conducted with six interviewees, 3 for local
students and 3 for international students. Their answering the
question is almost same with each other. First, for the question
about advantages of using internet for students, they answer
internet are easy to communicate with the friends and having
discussion with them, online shopping, inexhaustible education
information and save cost. While, for the disadvantages of internet,
they think will confused with the information, time consuming too
analysis useful information, wasting time to play games, lack of
communication skills and social virtual life.
Third, for the question does the internet create value for the
academic purpose, they are provide the almost the same question.
They all provide the answer yes and think that internet provide a lot
of information and easy to access compare to the traditional types
such as book and magazine. However, for the last question about
issues often occurred on internet, they all answer is lack of
communicate social, security issues about the personal information,
scamming, and some website needs payments.
