Chapter 1

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter represents the introduction, purpose of the study, statement

of the problem and rationale.

I. Introduction

Media is one factor that affects the life of some people. It covers a wide

spectrum of different communication methods such as television, radio,

newspapers, magazines and any other materials supplied by the media and

press. It supplies lots of valuable information, for example speeches,

documentaries, interviews, advertisements, daily news, financial markets and

much more. It is the distribution of audio and/or video signals which transmit

programs to an audience. The audience may be the general public or a relatively

large sub-audience, such as children or young adults.

Media can have good or bad effects to the audience especially to the youth.

This can be one reason of one’s behavior.

Of course, television, in moderation, can be a good thing: Most kids plug into

the world of television long before they enter school. Preschoolers can get help

learning the alphabet on public television, grade schoolers can learn about

wildlife on nature shows, and parents can keep up with current events on the

evening news. No doubt about it — TV can be an excellent educator and

entertainer.
That’s why this research was created to identify some of the effects of these

programs commonly watched by the youth.

II. Statement of the Problem

The study entitled value-oriented programs and its effects to the high

school students aims to answer the following questions:

1. What are the effects of value-oriented programs on high school students?

2. How value-oriented programs do affects the high school students?

3. How do value-oriented programs mold high school students’ values?

4. How do value-oriented programs help the degrading morality of the youth?

III. Significance of the Study

The researchers want to deliver the significance of their study to the

following:

To the youth. For they are the one who will benefit most by these

programs.

To the parents. For they are the first one who will encourage the youth to

exercise moral values.

To the teachers. For they have the responsibility to show their students

the proper values and right conduct.

IV. Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The researchers conducted the study in positive and negative effects of

value-oriented programs in television. It includes the way people apply the values

they learned and changed the people’s way of living.

V. Definition of Terms

The following terms are defined conceptually and operationally for better

understanding of this study.

Media. It refers to the multiplicity of publications, broadcast outlets.

Documentaries. It’s a film or program; It gives information on a certain
