Why should we study economics &

Importance and relevance of

Sociology

economics
to
Architecture
and
Particularly
Architectural Design?

How

What are the limitations?

Sociology: The study of the development, structure,

and functioning of human society, human
relationships.

Society evolves constantly under various

influences (especially consumerism) hence an
architect needs to understand the needs of the
society and propose a new building typology
though architectural design. Example Nithya
Gram, at Bangalore and shopping malls, gated
communities in general across the globe.
Helps in framing the design Problem (theses) or
studio exercise.
POE studies which can be also called case
studies.

Economics: The branch of knowledge concerned

with the production, consumption and transfer of
wealth.

Supremacy and Immortality.

No Maintenance required
and costs less.

Pruitt Igoe, Minoru Yamasaki.(rule)

Building 20: MIT campus. (exception)

Stone not used only for strength

but because of economic
problems and also reacting to the
context. (Labor Intensive.)

Due to the limitations in available materials and construction methods, the building is built of
bricks and rendered in white-painted plaster. As steel was unavailable, Koenigsberger had to
develop an alternative solution for the roof construction . He employed timber trusses in various
spans and heights, which are responsible for the sloping form of the roof. The longest truss is
circa 3.3m high. Like the window frames and doors, the parabolic ceiling suspended from the
timber roof construction was made of teak, a local material that was evidently not affected by
wartime shortages.
