Greetings of Peace,
This week, we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption (August 15). Because the feast falls on a Saturday this year, it is
not a holy day of obligation, though it will be celebrated as a Solemnity at the noon Mass on August 15 th. I invite you to
use this important day to consider all that Mary has taught us. Mary is a model of gentleness, faithfulness, and
compassion.

Perhaps this is why so many places of service are named after our Virgin Mother. Seibo is one of these places; a
hospital in Japan run by Franciscan Missionary Sisters and named Blessed Mother. This was the hospital that Sr.
Barbara Hogan, FMM, worked at for so many years. After over fifty years of service in Japan, Sr. Barbara returned to
the Boston area and served in the Wellness Center here at the Shrine. Sr. Barbara passed away last week and all of us
at the Shrine mourn this deep loss. While serving here, Sr. Barbara met every person that walked through our doors
with respect and compassion. She will be greatly missed.
Have a wonderful week,

Fr. Thomas Conway, OFM
