VIBRATION ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

FOR
FIRE WATER PUMP

Vibration Acceptance Criteria for Fire Water Pump.

1. Reference
o ISO 5199
o NFPA 20
o VDI 2506 (superseded by ISO 10816)

2. ISO 5199
Acceptance criteria for vibration shall refer to ISO 5199 table 1 as below,

Height of center line of fire water pump above 225 mm, therefore maximum value of
vibration velocity is 4.5 mm/s for rigid support and 7.1 mm/s for flexible support. And For
vertical pump are 7.1 mm/s.
Note : rigid support is one where the lowest natural frequency of the combine machine and
support system in the direction measurement is at least 25% higher than the rotational
frequency. Any others support is considered flexible
Base on above criteria, summary of fire water pump is as below:

VIBRATION ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

FOR
FIRE WATER PUMP

3. NFPA 20.
Refer to para 7.6.1.5 The operation shall be observed for vibration while running, with
vibration limits according to the Hydraulic Institute Standards for Centrifugal, Rotary and
Reciprocating Pumps.
Refer to HI standard, fig 7.5 should be used as a general guide as below.

VIBRATION ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

FOR
FIRE WATER PUMP

Fire pump Rotation is 2975 rpm (~3000 rpm) therefore maximum vibration 0.3/sec (7.62
mm/s).

4. VDI 2506
VDI 2506 is identical with ISO 2372 [1974]. However ISO 2372 was replace by ISO 10816
series standard. Therefore International will be applied is ISO 10816.
Fire pump motor driver shall refer to ISO 10816-1 : Mechanical Vibration Evaluation of
Machine Vibration by measurements on non-rotating parts Part 1 : General Guidelines.
Fire pump diesel engine driven shall refer to ISO 10816-1 : Mechanical Vibration
Evaluation of Machine Vibration by measurements on non-rotating parts Part 6 :
Reciprocating machines with power rating above 100 kW.

Refer to ISO 10816-1 annex B table B1 is as below :

.
The machine classification is as below:
Class I
Individual parts of engines and machines, integrally connected to the
complete machine in its normal operating condition . (Production electrical motor of up to
15 kW are typical examples of machines in this category.)

VIBRATION ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

FOR
FIRE WATER PUMP
Class II
Medium-sized machines (typically electrical motor with 15 kW to 75 kW
output) without special foundation, rigidly mounted engines or machines (up to 300 kW) on
special foundations.
Class III
Large Prime-movers and other large machines with rotation masses
mounted on rigid and heavy foundation which are relatively stiff in the directin of vibration
measurements.
Class IV
Large Prime-movers and other large machines with rotation masses
mounted on rigid and heavy foundation which are relatively soft in the direction of vibration
measurements (for example, turbogenerators sets and gas turbines with output greater
than 10 MW).

Refer to ISO 10816-6 annex A table A1 is as below :

And Annex A para 2 specified as below:

Quote
A reciprocating machine could well be classified by more than one class depending upon its type
application, size, configuration, flexible or rigid mounting and speed. For example, many industrial
and marine diesel engine may be classified in either classification number 5, 6 or 7. In this case
the minimum is class 5.
Pump to be classified as class 3. therefore maximum acceptance vibration for fire water pump
with motor driven is 4.5 mm/s and for diesel engine driven is 11.1 mm/s. For diesel engine,
maximum acceptance is 28.2 mm/s
