MONTHLY CLIMATOLOGICAL SUMMARIES

FOR
MAURITIUS, RODRIGUES AND OUTER ISLANDS
1. INTRODUCTION
Mauritius lies between Latitudes 1958.8' and 2031.7' South and Longitudes 5718.0' and 5746.5' East.
Rodrigues lies between Latitudes 1940' and 1946' South and Longitudes 6320' and 6330' East about 650
km East of Mauritius. St. Brandon is a coral atoll situated around Latitude 1627' South and Longitude
5937' East about 450 km to the North-North-East of Mauritius. Agalega consists of two small islands
between Latitudes 1020' and 1029' South and Longitudes 5634' and 5642' East, about 1050 km almost
North of Mauritius.
Monthly climatological data presented in this issue are based on daily observations of various
meteorological parameters recorded in Mauritius, Rodrigues, St. Brandon and Agalega.

2. STATIONS
Synoptic Weather Stations
Synoptic weather stations perform synoptic weather observations; that is, surface weather observations at
fixed intervals of time of sky cover, cloud base height, atmospheric pressure, temperature, dew point, wind
speed and direction, precipitation amount, horizontal visibility and other special phenomena.
The Mauritius Meteorological Services maintains six synoptic stations:
Vacoas (2018'S, 5730'E) WMO Station number 61995, and Plaisance (2026'S, 5741'E) WMO Station
number 61990, in Mauritius. Pointe Canon (1941'S, 6325'E) WMO Station number 61988 and Plaine
Corail (1941'S, 6345'E) WMO Station number 61989, in Rodrigues. Raphael Island, located at 1627'S and
5937E WMO Station number 61986, in St Brandon. Agalega located at 1021'S 5635'E, WMO Station
number 61974, in North Island.
Climatological Stations
Climatological stations record such parameters as: maximum and minimum temperatures, rainfall and some
other elements like atmospheric pressure, humidity, soil temperatures, sunshine and wind. The Mauritius
Meteorological Services has a network of 26 climatological stations in Mauritius.
Agrometeorological Stations
The agrometeorological stations monitor standard climatological data that are of interest to agriculture,
livestock breeding and forestry. These stations monitor the following parameters, evaporation, humidity,
rainfall, sunshine duration, temperature and wind.
The Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute manages four such stations in Mauritius with the
collaboration of the Meteorological Services. Savannah Sugar Estate maintains another station at La
Baraque.

3. INSTRUMENTS IN USE AT METEOROLOGICAL STATIONS:

Raingauges
Ordinary raingauges with outer rim of diameter 11.28 cm together with ordinary laboratory cylinders
graduated in cubic centimeters are being used to measure rainfall at most stations. Readings are taken at
0700 hours daily. Fourteen stations are equipped with rain recorders, which provide rainfall intensities.

Thermometers and Hygrometers

Ordinary mercury in glass thermometers are used to measure dry, wet bulb and soil temperatures.
Maximum and Minimum temperatures are measured by other appropriate thermometers.
Thermohygrographs have been installed at four stations.
Anemometers
Eight Dines anemometers provide wind data at the following sites in Mauritius: Digue Seche, FUEL,
Medine, Mon Desert Alma, Pamplemousses, Plaisance, Quatre Bornes and Vacoas. There is also one Dines
anemometer at Pointe Canon in Rodrigues. At Agalega, St. Brandon and Plaine Corail airport in Rodrigues,
wind is measured by a cup anemometer.
Sunshine Recorders
Campbell Stokes sunshine recorders have been installed at twenty-one sites in Mauritius. One station at
Rodrigues and one at Agalega are also in operations.
Evaporation Pans
Modified US Class A pans are used to measure daily evaporation amount at 14 stations in Mauritius and one
station, Pointe Canon, in Rodrigues.
Barometers
Mercury barometers, digital barometers and aneroid barographs are used at all synoptic stations to measure
atmospheric pressure.
Tide Gauges
Sea level is monitored using tide gauges installed at Port Louis and Port Mathurin. In January 2009, a new
tide gauge was installed in Agalega and another one at Blue Bay.
Upper Air monitoring Equipment
Presently Upper Air observations are carried out twice a week at Vacoas.
A GPS system using the SR10 Upper Sounding (receiver) software ICAR-IR 2010 is used to compute upper
level winds.
Automatic Weather Stations
22 automatic weather stations have been installed at different sites over the island. Weather parameters
observed by these automatic weather stations are: humidity, rainfall, temperature, wind and pressure. Three
stations, namely Vacoas, Bain Boeuf and St. Felix also record global solar radiation. There are also two
stations in Rodrigues which measure five parameters. Additionally the station at Citronelle also measures
the global solar radiation.

4. METEOROLOGICAL SUMMARIES
Monthly summaries of meteorological observations in the form of mean totals, extreme values with date of
occurrence and departure from long term mean are presented in this issue for various climate parameters of
stations located in Mauritius, Rodrigues and the Outer Islands.

Area of Responsibility of the Republic of Mauritius for the Naming of Tropical Cyclones
3

WEATHER SUMMARY - JANUARY 2015

January 2015 was warm, moist and unstable with vigorous convection occurring in the equatorial
region. Four named tropical storms were observed during this month, namely: BANSI,
CHEDZA, DIAMONDRA and EUNICE.
The axis of the subtropical high pressure systems was centred between 35 and 40 degrees South
latitudes. Cross equatorial flow was moderate and persistent during the month and the InterTropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) was located between 12 and 15 degrees South. Sea surface
temperature was positive over the SWIO Tropical Cyclone Basin and vertical wind shear was
weak. All environmental conditions were favourable for the development for tropical storms.
The month of January was very active with four named tropical storms evolving in the
Southwest Indian Ocean. The first storm/cyclone of the year was named BANSI on 11 January
2015. BANSI intensified into a very intense tropical cyclone (VITC) while moving in a general
easterly direction. The system impacted Saint Brandon directly where gusts of the order of 167
km/h was recorded. The associated storm surge submerged Raphael Island where the
Meteorological Station is located. VITC BANSI caused cyclonic conditions to prevail at
Rodrigues on 16 January when it passed at about 100 km to the north-north-east of the Island.
Highest gust recorded at Citronelle was 133 km/h. Clouds bands associated with BANSI gave
heavy precipitation and strong winds at Mauritius.
Moderate tropical storm CHEDZA, named on 15 January evolved in the Mozambique Channel.
The system crossed Madagascar from West to East. As it emerged into the warm waters of the
Indian Ocean, it re-intensified into a severe tropical storm while moving southward.
DIAMONDRA was named on 11 January and EUNICE on 27 January respectively. These two
systems evolved away from the Mascarene Islands, and did not directly influence weather over
the Islands of the Republic of Mauritius.
Rainfall over Mauritius, Rodrigues and Saint Brandon was above the mean with 150%, 203%
and 252% of the normal respectively. High moisture and the passage of VITC BANSI
contributed significantly to the above normal rainfall over the islands. Agalega recorded near
normal rainfall amount.
January 2015 was hot and sultry. Maximum temperature was slightly above the mean by one to
two degrees Celsius in Mauritius and the Outer Islands. The high moisture content and above
normal temperatures resulted in very uncomfortable atmospheric conditions.
Mean sea level pressure was below the seasonal mean at all stations by 2 hPa during the month.
The lowest mean sea level pressure for the month was recorded at Saint Brandon with 988.5 hPa
on 14th during the passage of VITC BANSI in the vicinity of Raphael Island.

Mean Rainfall over Mauritius : 401.6 mm

Percentage Rainfall of Long Term Mean : 150 %

January 2015 has been a very wet month with 401.6 mm of rainfall which represented 150% of the
long-term mean of 1981-2010.
Most of the rainfall recorded during the month was connected with two main episodes during the
second and third week, namely: a) the passage of the very intense tropical cyclone BANSI in the
neighbourhood of the Mascarenes during the second week, b) active cloud formations over our
region due to high moisture convergence in the region resulting in scattered thundery showers
mainly in the afternoons of the third week.
All regions over the island had above normal precipitation. The windward side of the Central
Plateau received the greatest amount of rainfall namely 400 mm and Eastern part had the highest
percentage of 170%.
