India is the leading exporter of human hair. Indian hair is
considered to
be fine, lustrous and free from chemical treatments making it
suitable for
manufacturing wigs. The hair exported from India is either raw
or processed
polished.
India exports various types of human hair viz., Remi, single
drawn,
double drawn, Weft, curly, wavy and non-remy. Among these
single drawn is

exported in large volume since it is lengthy in nature as

compared too other
types.
The export of long hair from India was a very big business in
the 1960's
and the demand was so much so that the prices kept on
climbing to a very high
level since the quantity of supply was limited. In 1970 the
Japanese found out
the synthetic hair, which was much cheaper and can be
manufactured to any
length. Due to this the entire market for natural human hair
more or less
collapsed for the next ten years. However, in the mid 80's
customers after
using the synthetic hair for a long period realized that the
natural hair
even though expensive is far better in quality and comfort for
wigs and
extensions. So the demand for human hair started picking up.
At present, India accounts for 15 percent of world human hair

Italy and U. S. A.
Challenges with hair industry in India Wig production is not technically developed in India, as
compared to China

More female variety of hair needed as it has a large global

demand
The logistics costs are higher which lowers demand
Sourcing of raw material is very limited.
The hair processing business is not structured.
Exports are much lower than that by China
Competition from Synthetic hair Wigs.
Sources of raw material:
Temple Hair
Temple hair is the most abundant source available. Each
year, thousands of worshipers make pilgrimages to
temples
where their hair is cut off as an act of religious sacrifice,
devotion and thanksgiving. This custom is lucrative that
temples designate certain women to ensure all the
pilgrims'
hair is properly braided before its cut off. By having the
hair
cuticles face the same direction; temples are able to sell
the
locks to wig makers for big bucks. The Balaji Temple in
Tirumala--the second busiest in the world--collects tons of
hair each week, thereby generating an estimated annual
income of ten thousand dollars for the temples. Some
other
temples are Simhachalam temple, Tiruchi Mariamman,
Irkangudi Mariamman, Tayamangalam Muthumariamman
and Palani Murugan
Village Hair
Village hair is regarded as lower quality than Temple hair
because it's derived from women's hair combs and
brushes.
The hair is collected monthly by what is known as a
hacker.
The hair is exchanged for sweets, plastic, toys, etc.

Barber Hair ( Thukku)

Finally Barber hair, or "Thuku" as it is known, comes from
the sweepings off the floor from barbershops. In the above
category the temple hair is very much demanded all over
the
world, because of its length and quality. Temple hair is
collected from the temples who sacrifice the hair for
fulfilled
their wishes by the gods.
