It is men oned in Siva Mahapuranam (EkadasaRudraVaibhavaKandam) that Dharshan of this

Temple gives MUKHTHI with no rebirth to the devotees at once. It is believed that as per the
Lords words Yama and Yama Dhootas (Sentries of Lord of Death) cannot come near the temple nor
the devotees around the temple in a circumference of 15 kms.

Even though the deity is suyambu, the Avudayar has been installed by Bhaanasura. The
Avudayar is of Gigan c size and impressive. Worlds biggest Avudayar.

Dear Devotees,

All are aware that Lord Siva, who blesses the world in ThiruppunaVaasalbefor all 4 Yugas. Is a
very huge, gigantic Avudayar in the whole world and has appeared in VajraVana (the dense
forest) as SWAYAMBU (not man made). Is worshipped here by INDHRA, BRAHMA, VAAYU,
YA M A, S U RYA, C H A N D R A N, C H E V VA A I, V YAG R A A S U R A, I R AVAT H A M,
AGASTHIYAR, TRIPURA ASURAS, THRI MOORTHIS, MAHA VISHNU,

MAHALAKSHMI, VARUNAN, AADHI SESHAN, KING JITHA SATHRU,

DHANATHAN (THE MERCHANT), THIRISANKU, SUNDARA PANDIYAN,
VINAYAKA, VASISHTAR THE SAINT etc.,

Once ingruthayugam, Lord Indran was cursed by Gauthama Rishi. Then as per the advice of
Deva guru Brugaspathi, Indran worshipped and did Pooja to this Lord daily for 1 hrs, and the
Lord pleased with this Pooja, got rid of the curse and blessed Indira to get rid of his sins.
Lord Siva who carries Ganga water on his head, at the request of Indhra, brought it down to
earth and filled a tank in this kshethram.
Siva, granted a boon to Indhra that anyone who worship SRI VRUDDHA PUREESWARARwill
get rid of their sins and attain MOKSHA. The Vinayaka Moorthi resides here is known as
AAKANDALA VINAYAKA. Natraja Sabha here is known as SIVANYANA SABHA.
This place is mentioned as PAZHAMPATHI in Tamil and VRUDDHAPURI in Sanskrit. This
sthalam is also called as Sadhananthapuram, Indirapuram, Vajrathurumavanam,
Vanamugam, Kaivalyapuram, Vruththakaasi, Punyangkurapuram, PunnagaVanam.
This place had different name in different Yugas: Indirapuram - inKritha Yuga, Bhramhapuram
- in Thretha Yuga, VruddhaKasi - inDwapara Yuga, PazhamPathi (Tamil) & VruddhaPuri
(Sanskrit) - in Kali Yuga.
This Kshethram is the only place in whole world where you will find all the 10 Holy Tanks
(Theerthangal) ie., : Indira Theertham, GangaiTheertham, BhramaTheertham, Chandra
Pushkarini, Lakshmi Theertham, Surya Pushkarini, Chakra Theertham, Sarpanadhi,
KalyanaTheertham and VarunaTheertham.
SthalaVriksham of this place: Chadurakalli - in Kritha Yuga, Kurundha Tree - in Thretha
Yuga, Magizham Tree - in Dwapara Yuga, Punnai Tree - in Kali Yuga, This Punnai Tree is
1250 years old.

VAJRA VANAM.

With the blessings of ThiruGnanaSambandhar, King Sundarapandian brought 13 Lingams

The King created a small town near the temple and lived their and this place is
c a l e e d S u n d a ra Pa n d i ya Pa tt i n a m , w h i c h s t i l l ex i s t . I t w a s m e n t i o n e d i n
PeriyapuranambySehekizhar.

At the entrance of the Temple there is a Sannadhi for SRI KUDAVARAI KAALI AMMAN who is
in a U G R A M form. It is mentioned in the somanandhiurpathi chapter in
VirthapuriMahatmium. We can see the deity through mirror only.
Sri Agasthiyar is worshipping the Lord on the back side of the Linga inside the Sanctum
Sanitorium. It is mentioned in VarunaAnugrha chapter in VirthapuriMahatmium.
There is a place called IDAYAN VAYAL near the temple town, where SRI RAMA PAADHUKA
given to VARUNA by SRI RAMA, is kept of worship. You can find the PAADHUKA there even
today.
It is said in ThirimurthyPoojanaAdhyayam that, to the Southwest ofVrudhapureeshwara
Lingam on the shore of ChakkaraTheertham, Lord MAHAVISHNU and to the Northeast on
the shore of Lakshmi Theertham, MAHALAKSHMI did penance for many days.
As per the VrudhapuriMahaathmiyam, Yama and Yama Dhootas (Sentries of Lord of Death)
cannot come near the temple nor the devotees around the temple in a circumference of 15
kms. Because of this even those who had commited great sins will get Mukthi if they visit this
temple and worship this Lord.
It is also mentioned here that, during the Tamil month of Vaikasi, in SwathiNatchatram the Car
Festival (TherVizha) has to be conducted for SRI VRUDDHA PUREESWARA SWAMY.During
Masi monthDeities visit Sapanadhi for Theerthvari.
There are 5 Sthlam around this temple. They are :

West - VelimukthiShethram
North East - Shethram which was worshipped by Saint Vashisht

Sthalapuranam says that SRI VRUDDHA PUREESWARAR himself resides in these

shethram.
