a) A boy standing between two cliffs produce a sound. Two successive echoes are
heard after 4s and 6 s. If the speed of the sound in air is 320m/s, Calculate the distance
between the two cliffs.
b) What is Carbon-14 Dating? Which metal is used?

A family uses a light bulb of 100 W, a fan of 100 W, and a heater of 1000 W, each for
8 hours a day. If the cost of electricity is Rs. 2 per unit, what is the expenditure for the
family per day, on electricity?

a) Why is it dangerous to replace a fuse wire with a copper wire?
Give one example each where high specific heat capacity of water is used:
(1) In cooling
(2) As heat reservoir.

b) Four cells, each of e.m.f 1.5 V and internal resistance 2.0 ohms are connected in
parallel. The battery of cells is connected to an external resistance of 2.5 ohms.
Calculate the total resistance of the circuit

c) ) Draw a labeled diagram of a transformer used to convert 1100V AC to 220 V.
What is the expected energy loss in the system?
A transformer looses emf from 220V to 15V.If 400 watts power is given in primary.

speed 20.0 m/s. The gravitational potential energy at the ground level is considered be
zero. Apply the principle of conservation energy and calculate the potential energy at
the maximum height attained by the stone. (g = 10 m s-2

(b) Define 'joule', the SI unit of work and establish relationship between the SI and
CGS unit of work.

c) (i) Draw a labelled ray diagram to illustrate (1) critical angle (2) total internal
reflection, for a ray of light moving from one medium to another.
(ii) Write a formula to express relationship between refractive index of the denser
medium with respect to angle of refraction in the rarer medium.

State two factors on which the strength of an induced current depends

b) Why the core of a transformer and other electromagnetic devices are laminated?
A wire bent into a circle carries current in an anticlockwise direction. What polarity
does this face of the coil exhibit?

(c)A battery of emf 15V and internal resistance 2 ohm is connected to two resistors of
4 ohm and 6 ohm joined (a) in series (b) in parallel. Find in each case the electrical
energy spent per minute in 6 ohm resistor.

Question -10
(a) (i) Like, we have a constant value for voltage coming through the mains i.e. 220V.
Do we have any similar value for current drawn??
(ii) What is the relation between heat capacity and specific heat capacity of a
substance?

(b) A linear object is placed on the axis of a lens. An image is formed by refraction in
the lens. For all positions of the object on the axis of the lens, the positions of the
image are always between the lens and the object.

Name the lens.
Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of the image of an object placed in front
of the lens at any position of your choice except infinity.
(c) How much heat is needed to convert completely 20g of ice at -4 o C into steam at
100 o C? (Sp. ht of ice =2.1 J/g o C,sp. latent heat of fusion=336J/g, latent heat of
vaporisation=2268J/g, sp.ht of water=4.2J/g o C).
