ASSIGNMENT-3
Syllabus
Physics NCERT 11th CBSE board pattern----------------------------------------------PAPER CODE: PH11-AST-3
Vectors and Kinematics
General Instructions
1. You are expected to revise the entire chapter before attempting these questions.
2. Students are allowed to discuss these questions with each other but attempt them yourself first.
3. There is no time limit to solve them as long as you get the correct answer.

Q1. A swimmer who can swim in still water at speed 9 km/h wants to cross a river flowing at speed
10 m/s. In what direction should he swim to cross the river?
a) In least time?
b) In shortest distance?
Q2. The distance traversed by a particle is given by the equation x= at2+bt+c where x is displacement
in kilometers and t is time in hours. Find
i.
ii.
iii.

Initial velocity of the particle.

The velocity at the end of 3 seconds.
The acceleration of the particle.

Q3. A boy travels the first half of the total distance with velocity v and the second half of that
distance with velocity V. Calculate the average velocity.
Q4. What is the displacement of a particle travelling in a straight line with uniform acceleration a in
nth second?
Q5. A ball is thrown vertically upwards with a speed of 20m/s from the top of a multistoried building.
The height of the point from where the ball is thrown is 25m from the ground.
a) How high will the ball rise?
b) How long will it be before the ball hits the ground?
c) Trace the trajectory of this ball.
Q6. A parachute bails out from an airplane and after dropping through a distance of 40 m, he opens
the parachute and decelerates at 2m/s. If he reaches the ground with a speed of 2m/s , how long is
he in the air ? At what height did he bail out from the plane?
Q7. Plot a position time graph for a ball dropped from a height of 1 kilometers and another ball
thrown vertically upwards with a speed of 360 km/h at the same time. Take g=10m/s2.

Q8. A body starting from rest accelerates uniformly along a straight line at the rate of 10m/s2 for 5
seconds. It moves for 2 seconds with uniform velocity of 50m/s. Then it retards uniformly and comes
to rest in 3 seconds. Draw velocity time graph of the body and find the total distance travelled.
Q9. A body starting from rest accelerates uniformly along a straight line at the rate of 10m/s2 for 5
seconds. It moves for 2 seconds with uniform velocity of 50 m/s. Then it retards uniformly and comes
to rest in 3 seconds. Draw velocity-time graph of the body and find the total distance travelled by the
body.
Q10. Can a body have a constant speed and still have an acceleration?
Q11. Can a body have zero velocity and still be accelerating?
Q12. A particle experiences uniform acceleration all the time. Can it change its velocity but still have
uniform acceleration?
Q13. Are kinematic equations applicable to all types of motions in one dimension? What about
motion in plane?
Q14. One lighter and one heavier ball is thrown vertically upwards with same initial velocity. Which
one will rise to the greater height? Which one will pass through the point of projection in their
downward direction with the greater speed?
Q15. Draw position time graphs for two objects having zero relative velocity.
Q16. Give an example when a body is at rest as well as in motion at the same time.
Q17. The acceleration experienced by a boat after the engine is cut off, is given by

= 3 , where

k is a constant. If v0 is the magnitude of the velocity at cut off, find the magnitude of the velocity at
time t after the cut off.
