Module 1 Multidisciplinary Foundations of Guidance

Introduction This module introduces you to the field of guidance and counseling, from both to its
global history, and local development. Foundational concepts/theories will also be introduced. There
are three files available for download as you walk through this module.
Learning Objectives At the end of this module, you should become familiar with basic theories of
guidance, the multidisciplinary foundations of guidance, and the historical development of guidance in
the Philippines.
Key Concepts Theories of guidance (and their roots), the philosophical, sociological, and clinical
foundations of guidance; the past, present and future of practice of guidance and counseling in the
Philippines.
1.0 Overview of Theories of Guidance
Activity 1
First, go through the Powerpoint presentation prepared by Triin Hannust that provides an overview

Upon viewing this video, it is important that you ask yourself:

A) How are Guidance and Counseling related?
B) How are the similar and/or different from each other?
C) What stood out to you among the guidance and counseling concepts presented as
particularly important for your own work/future work?

The author provides definitions of important terms in the field, context for their development and use,
as well as comparisons and contrasts among related concepts in the practice of guidance. In essence,
this presentation gets your feet wet, as it serves as an introduction to the field of guidance and
counseling.

2.0 History and Multidisciplinary Foundations of Guidance

Next, view the PDF document that summarizes the foundations of guidance. In this document, you
would be introduced to the multidisciplinary nature of guidance. Relevant philosophers are
enumerated, along with their core beliefs about individuals, and their nature and development. Then,
you would find a summary of C. E. Becks philosophical foundations of guidance. It is important to note

his beliefs such as: understanding the client precedes assisting him/her, the role of empathy and
interference, as well as our striving towards keeping social equilibrium intact.
Wrenns approach to a philosophy of guidance is also provided, along with the contributions of
psychology, sociology, anthropology, culture, and education. Important dates and developments in the
history of guidance are mentioned briefly. Finally, a brief overview of the growth of guidance in the
Philippines is also provided.
Activity 2
Read the PDF file made available at the course site, entitled Foundations of Guidance.
As you go through the study resources, ask yourself:
1) What brought about the need for professionalized guidance services as we know it
today?
2) What are foundational theories (and their interrelationships) that gave birth to guidance
and counseling?

You are encouraged to find relevant sources that may elucidate any queries and points of interest that
you may encounter through this material.

3.0 Guidance and Counseling in the Philippines

Go through the Prezi on the history and development of guidance. It will allow you to see the bigger
picture of the fields growth and development around the world, with special mention of the American,
European, and Philippine context on the latter part of the Prezi.

As you go through the study resources, ask yourself:
1) What phases of pseudo-scientific techniques did the field of guidance and counseling go
through before it was established as a scientifically-based discipline.
2) Who are some significant figures that contributed to the field.

Lastly, a well written article about the past, present, and future of counseling and guidance in the
Philippines is provided for you. This puts into our contexts many of the concepts and pursuits of the
field of guidance and counseling. This article locates the study and practice of this field in the sociocultural setting within which you would most likely practice, if you arent already doing so.

Activity 4
Read the PDF file made available at the course site, entitled Counseling in the Philippines: Past,
Present, and Future.
As you go through the study resources, ask yourself:
1) What may we learn from the history of guidance so that we can provide competent
contemporary services?
2) What needs in the Philippines context might I help address through proper guidance services
provision, given my involvement in education?

Please allot ample time to read, comprehend, and relate the materials to each other. My hope is that
you would come away with a solid sense of the foundations of guidance, which would be essential to
appreciating the upcoming topics we will learn about. So grab a cup of coffee or hot chocolate, and
