Message for Dr Jian Zhou Memorial Collection

It is my great pleasure to be invited to write this message for Dr Jian Zhou Memorial Collection, which
documents the life of Jian Zhou, an internationally renowned scientist and former director of the Laboratory
of the Centre for Immunology and Cancer Research, University of Queensland, who sadly left us 9 years ago.
The book is to be published to mark the 9th anniversary and I would like to take this opportunity to express my
admiration and respect for Dr Jian Zhou.

Dr Jian Zhou devoted his life to scientific research, meticulously and tirelessly. With his brilliant mind and his
personal effort, he made an epochal breakthrough in health of mankind, discovering the critical virus-like
particles which led to the cervical cancer vaccine.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Australia in 1972, the friendly relations
between China and Australia have rapidly improved. The visits by important delegations to both countries
have become more frequent. Mutual trust in politics is developing, economic cooperation is improving and
scientific and technological exchanges are expanding. The cooperation in science and technology between
China and Australia continues to develop on higher levels, in all dimensions and in various fields.

Dr Jian Zhou was among many outstanding young Chinese scholars residing in Australia. These scholars
exhibit the Chinese cultural aspects of diligence, determination and perseverance. They have advanced the
scientific and technological cooperation and exchanges between China and Australia, and their research
outcomes will serve not only the people from the two countries but all the people in the world.

Dr Jian Zhou was an outstanding example of a new generation of Chinese scientists. He is the pride of the
Chinese people as well as the Australian people. He devoted his life to the practice and interpretation of
science, “Science is without borders, it is for the benefit of mankind.”

Though he has passed away, his spirit will last forever. His life was short, but the Chinese people will never
forget him, the Australian people will never forget him and the whole world will remember him.

CONSULATE GENERAL OF THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA IN BRISBANE

Foreword

Shortly after I assumed Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Brisbane in early 2007, I heard
that there was a famous Chinese scientist in Brisbane, Dr. Zhou Jian, who made significant contribution to the
course of the health of the humankind. Many of his fine characters, reflected in his hard work makes him an
excellent representative of the new generation of Chinese scientists and earns my respect. Although I didn’t
have a chance to meet him, I often remember his great achievements and good deeds.

Dr. Wei Mingqian, Mrs. Sun Xiaoyi, Zhou Jian’s wife and other friends and relatives of Jian Zhou compiled a
book named “Jian's brilliant mind - The inventor of cervical cancer vaccine” to commemorate Zhou Jian.
Through this book, I believe history and more people will know Zhou Jian, an obscure scientist who lighted
the path of the advancing humankind by burning himself like a candle.
In commemorating Zhou Jian, we should learn his spirit of pursuing the truth relentlessly. There is no even
road in the scientific study. The efforts paid by Zhou Jian to achieve such a significant achievement on the
scientific road must be far beyond those made by normal people. Mrs. Sun Xiaoyi told me that the idea of the
synthetic virus-like particle occurred to Zhou Jian when he was walking for relaxation. From this story, we
can see Zhou Jian’s commitment and devotion into his research.

In commemorating Zhou Jian, we should also learn his deep patriotism. A Chinese saying says one should
think of the source when he drinks water. Zhou Jian had never forgot his motherland, China, where he was
raised and educated wherever abroad he was. He would try his best to help the development of the medical
and health course of China whether he was a small potato in a lab or a recognized scientist. “I got my PhD
Degree in China,” Zhou Jian would say in pride. Many of Zhou Jian’s patriotic stories still sound very
touching.

Now the vaccine for the cervix cancer has been put into use. It will protect more and more ladies from the
virus, save more and more lives and bring happiness to more and more families. With the popularization of
the vaccine, the historical contribution of Zhou Jian to the medical and health course of the humankind will
remain in people’s hearts forever.
SPECIAL MESSAGE TO COMMEMORATE
DR JIAN ZHOU

Dr Jian Zhou, as Head of the Papillomavirus Virology Unit at Princess Alexandra

Hospital together with Professor Ian Frazer co-discovered the fact that the
papillomaviruses like particles can be used as vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. This
research became the basis for subsequent development of the vaccine Gardasil. Dr Zhou
was a dedicated and talented scientist whose unfortunate death aged 42 in 1999 was a
major loss to the scientific community of Queensland and Australia. This book
commemorates his contribution to Queensland and Australian science.

Dr. Zhou was also a founding member of the Centre for Immunology and Cancer
Research (no the Diamantina Institute) of the University of Queensland. In addition to
his work on the causes of cervical cancer, he also made significant contributions to tour
scientific understanding in the fields of molecular biology, virology and immunology.

In official recognition of his life work and invaluable co-contribution towards the
development of the vaccine Gardasil for the immunisation against cervical cancer, the
Queensland Government established the $750,000 Dr Jian Zhou Smart State Fellowship
for Cancer and Immunology. Ti was awarded to Dr Ming Wei of the University of
Queensland in 2007 who will be researching treatments for lung cancer

Dr Jian Zhou

Outstanding people, and their equally outstanding deeds and achievements, should be celebrated
often. Therefore the life and achievements of Dr Jian Zhou should be celebrated now and for as
long as his legacy lives on.

Australia, and Queensland in particular, are very fortunate to be able to include Dr Zhou as one of
our own. Dr Zhou was an exceptional human being, a committed scientist, and a brilliant
contributor to medical research.

In Queensland we are very proud of our research capability and we are therefore proud to list Dr
Zhou among our most dedicated and successful researchers.

We remember Dr Zhou as the co-inventor of the virus-like particles which form the basis of
Gardasil, the world’s first vaccine for cervical cancer.

This vaccine can potentially save thousands of lives in Queensland alone.

Since April 2007 more than 178,000 doses of this vaccine have been administered for free in
Queensland for girls and women aged from 12 up to 26 years of age.

While we know this vaccination will deliver major savings to the health system, it will more
importantly protect the lives of thousands of girls and young women.

Dr Zhou was also a founding member of the Centre for Immunology and Cancer Research (now the
Diamantina Institute) of University of Queensland. He made significant contribution to the fields of
molecular biology, virology and immunology.

While Dr Zhou was only a member of the Queensland family for a short time, he was a very
influential member.

The research community applauds his achievements and contributions, the medical fraternity
recognise his brilliance and worth, and the people of Queensland acknowledge the very significant
contribution he has made. Dr Zhou will continue to be remembered for many years to come.

Message from
the Right Honourable the Lord Mayor Councillor Campbell Newman

Today Brisbane City Council has a program where every Brisbane schoolgirl can be
vaccinated against cervical cancer. And yet, as little as a year ago, protecting the cervical
health of young women was unheard of anywhere in the world.

It is only as a result of the ground-breaking work of Dr Jian Zhou, right here in Brisbane,
that the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine was made possible in our lifetime.

Dr Zhou’s vaccine is one of the most important additions to Council’s immunisation service
since the service began in 1931. Its inclusion makes the Brisbane City Council one of the
world’s biggest immunisation providers.

On behalf of Brisbane, I want to commemorate and pay tribute to Dr Zhou, who has
immeasurably improved the lives of so many women and their families across the world.

Foreword

Dr Jian Zhou died in the saddest of circumstances in 1999, aged just 42, however, as a brilliant medical
researcher, he led to production of a synthetic form of papillomavirus, using recombinant DNA technology,
made great contributions to a break-through vaccine for cervical cancer. His great contributions to human
beings and innovative vision in medical research should be remembered by all of us.

The aims of this book are to recognise Dr Jian Zhou’s great contributions to medical research, to promote his
vision and wisdom of developing cervical cancer vaccine to free women from diseases, to commemorate his
services to the community, and to commemorate his dedication to bridging cooperation in medical research
